Nope! And my signal levels are still the same as they've been for a couple years now...

    Perry:

Edit: I didnt see a tech did resolve your issue with the signal levels. Lets hope it stays that way so you can continue destroying me from the air ;D.

Pinging ~60MS to your first hop is too high, and is your first indicator the problem lies with comcast. If it gets worse during peak hours, that is another sign your node is overloaded. Cable is a copper medium, so do you notice any change when it is wet or cold outside?

Sadly comcast doesnt care to fix network issues it seems. They probably want to dump the customers that actually realize it's comcast's network that is having issues, as they're likely the ones downloading lots of stuff anyways.

Also, DSL is just as likely to have these issues as cable. The fact that cable is a "shared" medium really doesnt mean much any more. All the DSL connections get aggregated at a DSLAM (similar to a cable node) and if that DSLAM is overloaded you will suffer in the same way as an overloaded node.

If your signal levels look good, and you notice no patterns other than it gets worse during peak hours, your node is likely overloaded.

But I'm too stubborn to sit out, so I play on anyways and make do. Just gotta stay off the front lines on the ground

I downloaded PingPlotter and let it run Tuesday night. Graph below is what I got.. I had to change the scale on the graph because several of the samples went above 500ms.

When I find one of the high ping samples, the problem seems to lie somewhere between my town and Dallas, but I know contacting Comcast is a waste of my time.. they'd just tell me to reset my cable modem or some such nonsense (tried reporting similar problems in the past..).

Hope "they" fix it soon so I can get back to playing normally

My cable modem says under the signal tab:
    Downstream Value
    Frequency 531000000 Hz Locked
Signal to Noise Ratio 37 dB
    Power Level -6 dBmV

    Upstream Value
    Channel ID 1
    Frequency 31984000 Hz Ranged
    Power Level 39 dBmV

is that a good signal level?

    Thanks!

I found this awhile ago from dslreports, http://www.dslreports.com/faq/3412 (and yes, your signals look fine according to below):

Q: What kind of signal levels do I want on my cable modem? (#3412)

    A: Downstream Power:
You generally want between -12db and +12db. Most modems are rated from -15 to +15. Anything less or more than that and you may have quality issues.

I personally prefer to not have less than -7db. If you want to raise your signal level a bit, check my troubleshooting and splitter section.

    Downstream SNR:
This number is best over 30, but you may not have any problems with down to 25. Anything less and you will probably have slow transfers, dropped connections, etc.

See my "Downstream SNR" definition for more information on this.

    Upstream Power:
The lower this number is, the better. If it is above 55, you may want to see if you can reconfigure your splitters. Anything above 57 is not good and should be fixed ASAP. (This is getting pretty close to not being able to connect.)

    Upstream SNR:
Anything above 29 is considered good. The higher this number is, the better. If this number is below 25 and 29, you have a minute amount of noise leaking in somewhere. If it's anything less than 25, you want to get it fixed as you may have a lot of packet loss or slow transfer rates.

See my "Upstream SNR" definition for more info.

Heh, my downstream power is -12.5, upstream power is around 56 or 57. That's why the Comcast folk are so surprised that I'm able to get online at all

Yeah, I was talking about marstein's modem signals being okay. Yours are borderline okay to not very good (as you already knew). Like the faq from dslreports says, your numbers indicate quality in the line and possibly a splitter issue. But from your previous posts, it does sound like you've already had a tech come out to check the quality of your lines. Maybe he needs to come back and check the lines again AND also check/replace your splitter.

I've also read at dslreports that you can fix the splitter part yourself: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/cabletech/4.%20Splitters.
