    VOIP Problems

    Hi all,
First post, first day here. I arrive looking for the grail that is squad based play, and no hopping/diving or people carrying miniguns (ok i made the last one up...can I get one of those please?)
I have doen a search but not uncovered the answer to this question - I grovel if this is repetition:
Having read all the rules (twice ;-), the one thing that is a problem both for playing here and for my desire for team based play in general is that enabled voip was apparently the cause of the 'problem with your connection' error message during map load. Any suggestions to allow me to re-activate this and still get in to the game?
    Many thanks

Ah, this is where I have to reveal my ignorance. I am running the game on a laptop, albeit a high spec one. I will check the soundcard when I get home, but I am running this using a Belkin wireless router.
(And yes, I am a techno moron. It's an age thing. I could never programme a VCR either......)

    Re: voip

ive had many problems with the battlefield series and wireless networking, try wireing your laptop to your router and enable VOIP, just to see if it solves the problem, then you can work from there.

I run a wireless network throughout the house and have had to hardwire my machine to the router to solve your very problem.

Thanks Xink. Problem is that router is in the bedroom, laptop in my study up one floor. Not up for playing in bed (;-)). Will move laptop as a test - if I connect ethernet(?) cable, how do I select to connect through that rather than wirelessly?
Appreciate the advice Xink, and thank for the welcome Bubba

Thanks. I will give it a go tonight. The wife will think I am surfing porn when I lock myself away for the evening - not sure which she would think is worse......

    Welcome!

I use a laptop/wireless connection for BF2 without problems (a Dlink DI-624). You might also try to set it on DMZ mode and see if that works (from there you can troubleshoot further, or just live with DMZ mode and try not to be paranoid of hackers)...

    Re: voip

One of my employees uses my company DSL 2MB over wireless 54g - at quite a distance too (voip is ok) - let me know what router you have and Ill see if I can help you further.
The 'use an ethernet cable to test' is good advice as it rules the wireless as either a problem or not.
I have to say though I would not use a wireless connection myself *if* there were ANY possibility of using cable. A 20M ethernet cable will set you back a couple of bucks and is well worth running through your house, they are very durable - I ran one outside 50M once on an ISDN and it survived vicious winters and more besides.
    - Does enabling VOIP *always* trash your connection and does it ALWAYS work with if off?
Also are you running Teamspeak - I hear this can cause trouble with BF2 voip but I may be incorrect.
Can you also give me your audio settings for BF2 and your soundcard?
If I can help I will.

    Re: voip

    Thanks Dude, lots to consider.
Firstly, I'm in the UK, so you guys are all working when I am at home looking for a game - I am hoping that a European fraternity will build. To try and answer your questions: I am on a 2mb adsl, which should yesterday/today upgrade to 8mb, and a 54g wireless router from Belkin. Running the ethernet cable is a problem as the telephone sockets and my study are a long way apart and on different floors - why do you think this will make a diference? I get 30-40 mbps wirelessly
Enabling VOIP doesn't always create a connection prblem at map launch, but i never get it without.......
I don't know what Teamspeak is...............
And I will dig out audio settings and soundcard tonight - pretty sure settings are factory.......
Oh and I am gettng 25-40 fps - is that good, bad or indifferent?
Many thanks for your help - very keen to get immersed in the full team play thing, although you may all regret it as I am pretty crap. What a great place this is.......................
