Re: Widescreen?
I just went through this, and the catch was that you MUST have "normal" settings in your video.con files before you can even use the command-line options. Go to each of the video.con files and change them to 1024x768@60Hz, THEN run the game with the special command line for the res you want.
It probably depends on what the monitor claims to support. Mine just says "60Hz" by default, so anything else in those settings (including the actual monitor setting) fails.Peace through fear... since 1947!

Re: Widescreen?
it definitely just cut's the top and bottom of the 4:3 rendering. (Otherwise, you could run at like 1920x600 and see over your shoulders
)

Re: Widescreen?
I'm pretty sure it actually allows you to view more...I don't notice any stretching and you can see from my widescreen pictures of my map that it looks just fine. Or it cuts the top and bottom but you still end up seeing wider than other people unless they run 1900+ rez or something. I'd rather see more on my sides than top and bottom anyway.

Re: Widescreen?
Think about it, there is no way to watch a 4:3 DVD on a widescreen TV w/o stretching! Why would there be a way to do it in BF2? If you want it to fill up the screen then you have to lose a bit on the top and bottom.
Until games are starting to be developed in a 16:9/10 native resolution there is no loss-free solution to this. I don't see that happening any time soon as the vast majority of monitors are still 4:3, and for them to play widescreen games everything'll look squished horizontally, which is a lot worse than stretching.
