I'm not sure but I think I've only changed sides once or twice, usually to get back to where I was ie after an automatic change/reallocation by the server particularly where I was enjoying/learning from the experience I was having with my former teammates. One thing I have found is that if you are on an obviously weaker side it is often an opportunity to sl for some of us less experienced players. The weaker team is usually less organised as suggested by Warehouse and if you are prepared to to step up and sl in the face of a superior force the newer players seem keen to respond. Whilst it is often in vain against some of the ruthless teams when they have their game face on I have pulled it off a couple of times and its been one of the most rewarding experiences I have had on the server.

It is not always easy for new/potential squad leaders to voluteer to lead when the game is full of more experienced players, you kinda feel a bit intimidated, not that the other players are usually rude enough to let you know you are leading them to defeat when things go wrong. I try to look on being on the receiving end of a hammering as a free if painful lesson. If you're going down anyway you might as well do it at a higher pay grade, so step up and try to lead.
