It also helps to have have two tank squads spread out across the map to support many different squads on the battlefield.
How the tank squad fights is their problem off course, logically, they will stray farther away from the sullply point on a map like Kashan. It still keeps its value though. On Kashan getting an AA emplacement up is one of the key aspects of this tactic. Usually you will also be in a good spot to add in the AA kit and be useful in protecting the tanks and firebase with that. I haven't seen any jets insist on attacking our firebase when it has an AA emplacement and a SA-7.

Cas could really beat this tactic though. One bomb would wipe out the whole firebase and everything near it. Usually though the firebase will be built in a depression as low as possible. That way the CAS spotter will need to be on the target itself to lase it most of the time .

When all your armor goes down, you are very much in trouble and usually you will be taken down by a pack of tanks. That is no problem though, you just move out behind the next tank wave and do it again.

Most of the timethis tactic is simply a lot of fun. It is a useful variation on the run-in-get-killed-by-tank gameplay many desert maps tend to give for infantry. If you want to, you can even send those engineers in one of the many jeeps you will collect from the firebase to cap a newly available flag.

The other day with some of the E-1st we mounted a decisive rush-assault on refinery with a tank (crawlingeye-remember?) and a landrover. We were able to locate the enemy bunker and get our tank to take it out, securing the impending victory for our squad.

    Re: pr wedge

Well what I meant with fire and maneuver is that I dont like just having 2 guys covering my ass when moving under therefore the ballance, lets not rest on that too much.

BTW my setup is stolen from the danish army just there is a supportgunner instead of the LAT. but you cant get 2 supportgunners unfortunatly

An other tactic, that i usually use on sunset city or other citymaps is to have a jeep of somesort manned by 2 usually LAT and a rifleman. and the have 2 on each side of the vehicle. Have the jeep advance at the pace of the troops and its quite effective thou it takes some coordination and yelling not to have guys running of to hunt a lonely enemy.

I'd love to join you ingame just to get completly clear on your way of maneuver, my IGN is Katanama.

    Re: pr wedge

Made a new video of a practice run today. THis was doen with no players I know. After an extremely tough battle against RMS's squad, an apc, with a firebase in the distance, we were finally able to take the hill. Then we used fire and manoeuvre to get to the firebase.

It's a quick video as proof of concept sort of.

I was especially pleased to be able to organise the movement quickly, without my squadmembers even realizing I was using fireteams.

Nice video, it was interesting choice of music but still awesome. I especially liked the slow-mo sprinting. Shows how powerful the wedge is! =)

    bump^

I would like to see more of this used, after using a 3 man squad on kashan 32 last night before i crashed to the desktop, i think that this type of formation is very valuable, especially on maps such as Qin Ling and Qwai, when you have a bit more foliage to use as cover.

I also think using a more obtuse triangle version of the PR wedge could be very helpful as well, and even more so in a proned or crouched position.

The wedge is very useful with armor as well, don't think its only good for infantry.

Al thanks for posting btw! its always helpful AFAIK FTW 24/7!

    Re: pr wedge

Thanks Randy for the feedback. I Now call the squad "discipline" because that is the most important mind set to get started.

I also started calling out special kits off the bat and worry less about the spawned kit, as this simplifies it a lot. Usually now I will say "I need a medic and an engi, the rest spawn rifleman". Then I will asign an automatic rifleman, someone responsible for AT(at or hat), and depending on the situation, I will give the engi a marksman for one spawn.

The most experienced player will always stay rifleman, because it is sooo vital to have that AT up and rearmed at ALL times. This is a pity though because it may be a bit boring for them and often the unknown players really suck at e.g. using the H-at, or waste their AT on infantry all the time. Still, it is better then having a good player on AT without ammo.

The actual formation is almost never used. 99% of the squads I get have too much people that don't even know what a wedge is and we will have lost too much time before they get it, and then it will be too new for them to actually make it work. The only time I do this is when the squad is bored and in an area with a lot of foliage. Many players do seem to enjoy it when I try to have them move in an actual formation.

The 2man/4man fireteams do work very well in my experience. It is quite easy to use and to explain, and it keeps the enemy on their toes as they won't be able to pinpoint the squad's location easily to flank you after that.

Also having Bravo in a 50cal vehicle, an apc or a tank works very well, and with an apc/50cal you also have a huge increase in mobility as the squad always has a transport at the ready. You can very quickly switch from defense to to a blitz attack on a lightly defended flag or firebase. The vehicle can also be sent out quickly to support another squad or do recon.

Your triangles LIE!!!!! That isnt 360˚, Youre missing a few spots! I now know where your blind spots are, and where I can go in and knife your whole squad one by one! STARTING WITH THE MEDIC! MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Neat tho. Probably hard to get organized on a random night....

With the tanksupport squad I would set up 2 as fixed engineers and one as flexible.
and I would add *marksman to the list for certain maps/situations.
