Re: Gonna be gone for a week or two...
Make sure your board doesn't need a BIOS Flash for that 8400 some of the older 775 boards will need it to run that chip.

Re: Gonna be gone for a week or two...
Ok, Imma gonna be straight up here, I have absolutely no idea what-so-ever what any of that means.
I'm just good at plugging things in and out.
DB, if its not to much trouble, could you give me a little run through? I would so greatly appreciate it, id come to your house and pay you 1000 dollars, plus tip.
How do I find out my SP-thing?
Do you think you might know what it is?
I dont have a floppy drive, do I have to go out and buy one to use it?
Cant I just port the floppy's data onto my dads laptop and have him transfer it to a CD?
Agh!

Re: Gonna be gone for a week or two...
On the XP install disk it should say something like «Includes Service Pack 2» (or 1).
Which intel motherboard do you have exactly ?
The Intel DP35DP ?

Re: Gonna be gone for a week or two...
Well, here's the story. You can set the sata disk controller in RAID, AHCI, or IDE mode. XP has built in support for IDE emulation only. To use the other modes, you need to supply the proper driver to the installer. That is usually done with F6, and shoving in a floppy. Well, duh, that motherboard does not have a floppy controller! So you either:
a) Buy a usb floppy (warning, XP does not support all of them)
b) Slipstream an XP install CD with the proper drivers added.
c) Use the controller in IDE emulation.
I suggest you go with c).
So, power up, hit F2, go to the advanced menu, Drive Configuration.
Advanced > Drive Configuration Menu
You should see this:
Configure SATA as… • IDE IDE is default
• RAID
• AHCI RAID: enables RAID which may require you to install the
RAID Driver during OS installation
AHCI: allows you to take advantage of Advanced Host
Controller Interface features such as Native command
Queuing , Hot plug, etc., without the option to use RAID.
Requires a hard drive that supports AHCI.
Make sure it is set as IDE (the default might be AHCI on this board).
Let it boot and see if the XP installer «sees» the drive.

Re: Gonna be gone for a week or two...
Well DB, i did what you said, and it didnt get me to the blue screen.
It went straight to my log-in screen, which had my personal info and such already in there (so I dont think my hardrives screwed over).
Do I still need to reinstall XP?
Also, my mouse and keyboard keep turning off in the middle of the windows "loading" screen with the scrolly bar.
Whats the deal with that? Something to do with the whole mobo thing?
Also, what does IDE mean? Am I in the clear for now?

Re: Gonna be gone for a week or two...
I don't see a reason not to set it to IDE unless you 're planning on configuring your disks in RAID (0,1,5,...).
My advice is to reinstall your OS, I 'm amazed it even boots with a new MOBO and the old chipset drivers. You could try to remove them manually and install the new ones, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Re: Gonna be gone for a week or two...
Ok, so I put in my XP disk, it asks me if i want to install, i click yes, yadda-yadda, and then it brings me up to a "Partition" screen.
What do I do here?
I know I want to install it on "C", which has the most space avaliable, but also currently still has my "old" XP install. When I clicked it, it said "It is dangerous to run two OS's on one partition", etc. etc.
What should I do?

Re: Gonna be gone for a week or two...
Cody, a great resource, in addition to these folks is to check out the Hardwarelogic.com forums and ask questions there...VERY helpful to me building my latest desktop and my company server. In case you want more feedback. Also, Bamboo on the TG forums is a great help. But DB and Ghost are giving you great help here.
FYI, I have the E8400 on my new rig with an asus x38 mobo and had to reinstall my os 3 times. Just to get it all set correctly.
