I guess I've been on the command seat only on the wrong hours then. When I'm in it, I will hear total silence, until someone needs something from you. No sitreps, not anything do I hear. Just the occasional "enemy squad/tank etc. here" is what I get.

I disagree with the aversion on micromanagement some have by the way. Some of the best games with a co I've played featured a co organising attacks, defences and the timing of it. Saying to squads you defend east, the other west of flag for example is one of the best things you can do. Other things are telling a squad to hold off attacking until more soldiers arrive etc.

Flags on this game are capped with 2 to 4 squads often. Encirling the enemy is often the way to get a flag, with a focus on cuttin of easy reinforcements from the enemymain. One of the worst things that often can happen on this game is having 2 or three squads attack from the same side, rushing in, and getting chewed to bits by 50 cals and the like.

When flags fall, you often see several squads just sitting around the flag, killing the enemy until his defenses are weak enough for one squad to move in while the others secure the area.

Well I hope to see more CO's that really bring a gameplan.

The contact report thing doesnt tend to work for me so I really only mention tanks, etc

Yea sounds fine, you defend east leaves timing and position pretty open by the sounds of it. Just sometimes very specific demands can translate as walking into a stream of bullets, it doesnt make sense to the guys on the ground but Im happy to work towards general objectives of course.

If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have obviously failed to plan properly.

Instead of having to face straight up in the air stuck in the CP, maybe have the commander drive around in a Command Bradley (or faction-appropriate vehicle) that only he can drive, with a slow respawn so they're not driving around at the front. At least that way they could drive around when they get bored, and there'd be a risk factor to keep things interesting, and if it died they would be stuck in the CP until the Bradley respawned.

Having a commander could also give a ticket every three minutes to your team, or something along those lines, so that in a long, close game having a commander would put your team ahead. One of the problems with commanding now is that it takes so long before you can actually do anything, so more support options would be great.
Make sure you post this in the suggestions forum when they allow suggestions for .8 again.

I also feel that a UAV flyover, (predator/reaper/globalhawk) or a spy satellite flyover (One frame, every however long it takes for a satellite(s) to pass over a given spot) is not unreasonable, assuming the UAV maintains altitude and course after it has been called in, the commander should be able to switch from CO screen to the UAV camera control.
I have no interest in being "in the action" when I CO but I DO need updated intel, and running a squad means you cannot be talking to the CO all the time. The CO currently provides coordinated voip intel, something that can be done without him (in the form of having a message typed), with a CO in the seat, it takes longer to get build orders, and there's one less person at the front in a squad putting rounds downrange.

I've tried to CO a few times, and the only reason I stayed was because on high traffic maps, its the the only way to guarantee a spot on the server (short of buying an SM, but I don't have the funds for that right now (as an interesting side note, I have never eaten so much ramen in my life >_>) You need a much greater attention span to play CO than the average RTS, due to the lack of incoming information to process. Even when the WHOLE team has and uses voip, its not like you can micromanage your forces or see what they see. It takes a LOT of patience, and if you end up with the team with a poor understanding of timing and coordination, it's enough to make you cry.

In closing, the CO should hang back, but they shouldn't be bored unreasonably. When the person in control starts getting bored and frustrated, stupid choices get made and games get lost. Just seeing the fruits of your orders (other than a Your Team has Won message) would be enough for me.
BF3 is a good game, and when they finish it, it may even be a great game.

The CO is really unnecisary now. A few sugestions to bring them back would be:
    1. A UAV that gives the commander a view on the field like the zoom but with fog of war so he can see how the fight is going but not spy on the enemy.
    2. Multiple strikes with shorter time such like having motors(15min) arty(30min) and JDAM(1hr) in one map or maybe player targeted like in Forgotten Hope.
    3. Mobile command vehicle able to drop a team rally point.
    4. A field helipad for spawning 1 transport heli.
    5. An ammo dump for supplying vehicles and infantry.
    6. A field medical station.
    7. Radar for spotting aircraft. Like the scan but it only can see planes and helis.
    8. AC-130 Support with satellite view(either manual or targeted) - 25mm(manual), 40 mm(targeted), and 105 mm(targeted) strike.
Some of these may be a bit overboard but they all are used in the real battlefield.

    1. Overboard =/
    2. Well.. maybe
    3. Ehhh... RPs are tiny.
    4. Never going to happen.
    5. Maybe...
    6. Would be nice
    7. Sounds pretty reasonable, with a good warmup time.
    8. Maps too small, Not every faction has an AC-130, never going to happen.

    Re: Commanders

commander's are necessary no matter what......even the best soldiers and SL's need direction, or orders, or directions for that matter at any given time......

and if there was no commander how do you expect to launch the area attack? Which at certain times comes in handy.......as we have all experienced.

The commanding setup in .8 in my mind is perfect for the novice commander, i hope to see some who have questioned doing it in the past step up, it will be well warranted and very much appreciated!
