Re: why do people ask you about how old you are?
I'm sure it's been said before, but I'll say it again: I do my best to respect all players, regardless of age or voice. I myself was once the odd man out, a 12 year old American in a clan predominately populated by twenty-something europeans (was an interesting experience, to say the least), and I know how annoying it can be to have questions about your voice constantly. That said:
-If you *do* have an annoying voice (high pitched, loud, mic down the throat, et al), don't expect everything to go well if you talk a lot.
-Don't be offended by questions about your age; either answer them honestly if you feel comfortable, give an obviously high answer if not ("53." in a deadpan voice works well, as does "IM THIS MANY" if your audience isn't brain-dead), or if you're feeling particularly ambitious, you can say you're a girl in an overly fruity voice. Any good humored answer, honest or otherwise, should generally earn respect from those worth earning the respect of. There will always be trolls looking to piss off younger players, it's unavoidable, and it's best to ignore them. If they persist or are overly aggressive, !reporting them may be the best option.
-Remember that everybody is not out to get you. In many cases (in other games; never seen it in PR or on TG) light-hearted comments about age are exacerbated by overly defensive behavior.
-Remember that everyone keeps an internal "reputation" tally going for everyone they meet. It's not conscious behavior, but it's there. Everyone starts at zero. Your voice is a -20 in most situations (both because it's annoying and because it is often accompanied by bad play), remember this and do everything you can to counteract it's negative effects. Play well, minimize mic chatter, be good-humored, etc.
-If you make friends with the regulars on the server (those people I said it was worth earning the respect of; both because they will be there to respect you and because they will be there to be your friend), they will generally be there to defend (perhaps not the best word; counter-attack may be more appropriate) you from those who mock you for your age or voice.
-In cases of large age difference, it's probably best to avoid overly "chummy" behavior until you have a firm connection with those you're talking to.
Some of this may seem harsh, and maybe it is. It comes from my experience, and that experience was not with TG but with a different community.
edit: On the topic of backseat squadleading: I used to be incredibly guilty of this; every single round I'd "make suggestions" that were very nearly "let's do this". Glad I finally decided to step up; I'm sure my former SLs are as well :P.

Re: why do people ask you about how old you are?
I wonder how old people think I am when they just meet me. In 2142, people seemed to have astonishment in their voice when I said I was 13 (still am).
People comment that I have a very deep voice for my age.
Unlike your case, nobody has asked me, although I have said it on the 'all' chat before, not that all the people would remember.
I'm not offended when people ask about my age, because they all think I'm older than I actually am lol!Last edited by Berlancic; 12-25-2008 at 11:23 PM. Reason: Extra info

Re: why do people ask you about how old you are?
One thing that will grate on some of the mature players nerves is unecessary spam txt in all chat. In game is not a forum, we all throw the odd comment in now and again but its not the place for debate, long winded requests for technical help or rule debates. Also don't be offended if someone tells someone to pipe down, it's not personal and they don't have the time to politely hint that the 'spammer' take it to the forums, they are playing and concentrating. Spam clutters the screen and hurts people's playing experience if it gets out of hand. We all do it, but excessive spam comes across as very immature. A good one to avoid, I will no doubt get banned for spamming now lol but I thought I'd share.

Re: why do people ask you about how old you are?
The worst players I've seen are in the 20-30 age bracket. (Not so much at TG, of course.) This is the age when testosterone peaks and drowns one's brain.
(And it's often joined by an equal dose of alcohol.)
If you're young and I ask your age, odds are it's because I'm impressed and am curious how impressed I should be. But it's not something I do often.
If someone is driving me nuts (either a motor-mouth "kid" or one of the aforementioned brain-drowned "adults") I'll just avoid them.Dude, seriously, WHAT handkerchief?

This link got a bit nasty in my OP.

Some nice dialogue to help explain in my OP. http://www.tacticalgamer.com/battlef...e-too-far.html
How can I build a reputation for a good SL when they second I start briefing I have what was a 6-man-squad reduced to either 2 or if I'm lucky 3 people most of the time?
'nuff said

Don't sweat it too much Fighter. I'm 14, and girl. I'm also working on SLing, but in 2142. There are always people who jump and jump back out. But you already knnow that.
