Speed of loading is mostly down to seek time of the drive and how fragmented the files are. The map is assembled from individual components I think so there does not seem to be so many large files or it would load much more quickly

I have heard of people taking 10 minutes to load a map which is just wrong and at the other end of the scale it should be massively faster on the second load of the same map thanks to cache or memory effect where the drive and computer remembers the smallest files and doesnt need to load them from the drive.

I wonder if you installed bf2 and pr to a big fast memory stick, would it load faster

If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have obviously failed to plan properly.

Re: Sick of putting in the disk all the time?

I say it would, maybe I will try that one of these days!!
As I stated before I use a second HDD and I then use DiskTrix UltimateDefrag 2008 to defrag my HDD and place PR files as high performance on the outer edge of the track. I definitely have no issues with load times but when I had my older slower computer I even noticed a difference having my system set up this way. I still loaded maps a lot faster than having PR loaded on the primary HDD.
A buddy of mine was the one that told me to set things up like this and to buy the defrag program, it took me a few times of experimenting to get UltimateDefrag set up correctly but was well worth it to me. Even before I had UltimateDefrag I noticed a slight improvement over load times though.
With my new computer and the way things are set up I am in game ready to go with 2:58 left on the ticker, on the older computer it was about 1:45 and then before that with PR loaded on the primary HDD it was usually the game was already started.

If only publishers realised that the PC audience -unlike the console gamers- is too lazy to place a new disk to play a different... Perhaps we wouldn't hear this crap about PC-gaming being on it's death bed!

Its the noise as well, dvd disk spinning up disturbs my karma man

The timer starts when two people load up the map so just means you are one of the fastest out there. I usually go get a drink but I guess Im like 2:45 when I load

The outer disk thing sounds like the real deal, I forget if thats the fastest bit of a disk but just having it all in one place is great as it eliminates seek times mostly and since pr file size average is like 120k x thousands of files that is a good thing

You don't open the mini file, you mount it with a fake drive (like daemon's tools) and it just hangs out until you hit your desktop icon for PR. Then it makes sure the disk is there (checks the mini disk) and you are good to go.
Just because everyone does something does not mean that it is right to do.

Mini images rock, I use them for every title I can now.
When I buy a fgame, I like to protect the disk it comes on at all costs.

Piracy is the killer of computer gaming, companies are losing money on the games they produce so they are eventually going to give up on making games for the computer if piracy continues. One site I seen a while back said that if piracy continued at the rate it is growing then the companies that make and produce computers games will certainly have to make games completely for consoles to make money.

Ditto, I do not see the point in making players life harder. The cd Key is sufficient protection for multiplayer and people who want to pirate software will always find a way.

I got my The Thing movie DvD off Amazon only to find out I cant run it on my computer, I would not have had that problem had I downloaded the image off the net for 0 Euros.

    Way to go universal.

    I agree.

Steam-like systems are the future. All this dvd in the disk protection stuff is so out of fashion.
