Re: Caps Lock vs. Cobra
I use a wireless joystick so this usually happenes that it goes into sleep mode mid-flight and I don't realize it until the cobra is on its side and beginning to dive.... I've been nagging the bosses about it... Use the M key definitely, forget caps lock.

Re: Caps Lock vs. Cobra
How many times do I have to say this...wireless gear is a BIG BIG NO!
Especially when flying aircraft...and transporting troops!
The worst thing I can think of is a fully loaded Blackhawk slipping into a freefall and smashing on the ground while the pilot complains that his mouse batteries just died.

Re: Caps Lock vs. Cobra
Ive used a wireless mouse for over 5 years. If its turning off when you use it then thats pretty crap but its not anything Ive had.
Logitech has been consistent for me and no wire means an improvement to steady movements
I tend to use caps because M is on the other side of the keyboard and I'm right handed so that doesnt really work. I generally dont let it fully maximise though and dont do it 5m off the ground
The lag from loading textures is a big enough hazard allready in that situation
Sleep mode on my mouse happens if you dont use the mouse for 5 minutes, Im not aware of any ability to change that and theres no need to for bf2
The keyboard still works with spawn screen up I believe. highlight your name on the left and it'll put your icon in white on the map which helps to identify yourself quicker
You can also use the M key while digging bunkers, etc

Re: Caps Lock vs. Cobra
I'm just telling y'all what I know. Back a few releases ago (.5 or .6) there were days I'd see maybe one downed aircraft a round due to wireless devices. At that point I vowed never to go wireless...that's when I picked up my G5.

Re: Caps Lock vs. Cobra
I don't use M Because i have to take my hands off the controls, i double tap Caps lock so i never lose mouse control and it makes my map pop up for a second or two for me to see where i'm going. I usually just use a landmark i can see on the map.

I have an old MS Sidewinder 2 w/ Force Feedback. It actually works pretty well, though I disabled the force-feedback for BF2 - I found that it just gets in the way of flying the aircraft.

Re: Caps Lock vs. Cobra
Personally I don't think the pilot should EVER be looking at a map, and if they do, use the map, not the squad management screen. (M not CAPSLOCK)
Attack Pilots need an SL, trans pilots need SL or a CO.
On controls, I shelled out a fair bit of cash for a G15 generation 1 from Logitech. It will take up to 10 simultaneous key hits before it locks up, plenty to fly.
I play in a cramped space, so I don't have room for a joystick, and they're too cumbersome for me anyway. Mice are just too imprecise for my taste.BF3 is a good game, and when they finish it, it may even be a great game.

Re: Caps Lock vs. Cobra
I had a G15, and it doesn't hold a candle to a low-end 10 dollar USB keyboard, IMO (when it comes to comfort and ease-of-keystroke; the LCD was nice). That said, the Logitech G5 is the best damn mouse ever. If mice aren't precise enough for you, you just need better mice.

Re: Caps Lock vs. Cobra
Either:
Back in 0.6 flying the cobra on oman, unfortunately I opened the console, but the console remained invisible for some reason. There I was rapidly losing control until I realised what it was, and I found the button to late.
Or muttrah in the LB where I full throttled up confidently, only to find that a combination of the LBs tendency to nose down and my joystick not plugged into the throttle properly did not have good results.

Re: Caps Lock vs. Cobra
My favourite memory of playing pr oman would be chasing the bomber in the cobra and shooting him down with hydras, didnt do that too often in vanilla. Unfortunately now pretty much impossible
The big keyboards are a fail for me, I use a cut down laptop plug in keyboard which is not much bigger then the width of my stretched out left hand, ideal for games and more ergonomic imo as its natural for people to have hands fairly close together. Cost me £5

Re: Caps Lock vs. Cobra
This system is still hardcoded vanilla stuff. I understand why the keyboard and mouse are disabled when the caps lock map is open, but I don't use the keyboard and mouse for flying, at all. But I still can't fly when I open the caps lock menu, because my joystick controls are seen by the game in the same way the keyboard and mouse are.
The beatings will continue untill morale improves.
