Be sure to check out the book by Galloway and Moore. Much better source of info than the movie. Lots of stuff in the movie (for instance the entire final battle) is pure fiction.

Take away the Chinese jeeps, I say this movie, didnt see no FAV or ice cream truck. the logi trucks I can understand. No AA whatsoever. Hueys would be invincible but of course then it only have to be trans hueys. I like the original idea, maybe just some tuning and tweaking.

Would ruin the epicocity of the movie for me.

Good god, that is some of the worst Special Effects work I have ever seen. It looks like ITT Tech grade work, honestly! (no judgement on the movie itself; never seen it. Your idea looks cool, too, although I personally wouldn't touch the choppers if the map is how I envision it. Much rather walk, thank you!)

Re: We were soldiers once.. And young.
Problem with modelling a map too closely to a real situation is that this is a map we have to play repeatedly.
Tactics that might have worked for a one off battle cant so easily be replicated for a computer game where everything is so easily calculable /predictable
Kudos to the devs for increasing random situations via new game modes etc
Think I heard steel thunder was being remade possibly. I think every map has to be much more open then many real combat situations otherwise in our game it can become a shooting gallery which lets the game down

Re: We were soldiers once.. And young.
To be honest, this isn't actually based on the movie. And it isn't in the Vietnam War.
This would be a fictional encounter between Chinese and American forces that, in some quirk of fate, happen to engage on the same battlefield that the Americans and North Vietnamese fought over.
It would also be a medium-to-large sized map, but the entire point of the map is extremely focused battle where firebases in small, sheltered areas and behind the enemy lines will win the game.
The skill of the pilots will also have a lot to do with win-or-lose.

Damn Hueys are sexy. I loved this movie. And it makes me want to re-install BFVietnam.
Map-wise, I dont know how this one could work out, but I do like the general idea.
