I hope the spamming is because its new. Iam sure the spamming on TS was epic when it got introduced. Now it is really only used when needed, actually it is very underused, probably with respect to the players who have been traumatized from its introductionary spamfest. I kind of can understand it.
I hope for squad communication we will all go back to in game voip. Its just more reliable. For mumble your guys may or may not have heard you. And we still need teamspeak to radio in an airlift/strike/apc.

Muble should be for squadleaders to discuss tactics (my squad provides covering fire while your squad assaults getting shot to pieces by enemy fire and friendly fire).
For grunts supporting armor to tell them something of interest. (so it WAS an IED I wanted to say something but wasnt sure) and to complain to the pilot for being dropped off in a hotzone. (wtf, good for you rifles do not shoot through the chopper, eh ? ),

So yes, it is a usefull addition, and if it had a key to radio to the whole team it could replace teamspeak, but for maximum efficiency we need all 3 and each should be used only when necessary.

well like i said, i think a merge would be best. a mix between ts and when in 50 m range, it utilized postional audio. the best of bothworlds

Regardless of that, there's now "mumble only squads" that will boot you if you don't want to use mumble which further limits the already limited squad selection on most rounds. I'm not here to trash the concept of the mumble software, I think it's really cool, however I just don't like how disruptive it's been to my ability to enjoy the gameplay on the TG server.

For me, the main sticking points are

    1. Reduced framerate from having this running in the background, which I assume comes from the software having to position all 64 voices including those that you can't hear.

On my core 2 duo e8500, 4gb ram, geforce gtx 280 OC, I could run PR at max settings at a constant 60fps; now it will sometimes dip into the 30s so you can imagine that those with older systems would be experiencing more pronounced slowdowns. If anyone else is experiencing performance issues, please back me up on this. I know at least one person has contacted me so far to confirm that they are experiencing these issues.

    2. The fracturing of squads into "mumble only" and normal squads.

This never happened with the previous voip + teamspeak configuration since you didn't need everyone to be on teamspeak to maintain effective communication without people getting confused by a mix of positional audio and non-positional audio. The ultimate effect is that there are less squad options for players who don't want to use mumble.

I think that mumble should be relegated to vehicle squads only (air, and armour) so that individual crewmembers can communicate to one another with out spamming everyone else in their squad. This software definitely has a role in PR gameplay but I don't think that role should be in infantry squads.

Shouldn't you be getting more than 60fps with a 280?

    1) I think you have more issues than just Mumble. I have almost exactly the same setup and have zero problems.

    2) VOIP was down earlier today, so some squads wanted mandatory comms. It's just like daily operation of the server when people start up "VOIP" squads and boot people who don't have a mic. No difference.

My monitor refreshes at 60hz and I like to play with v-sync. Anyways, past 60fps I can't tell the difference.

To your first point, it's entirely possible that it's a combination of mumble and the new PR release, but I only started noticing slowdowns once I tried out mumble last night. I set it up exactly as told, and even downloaded the update. I'd like to know what your system specs are though.

As for your second point it's not at all like squads booting for not having a mic. BF2 has been out since 2005 and if you're still playing the game without a mic, shame on you. The in-game voip doesn't produce slowdowns and doesn't require 3rd party software. It's perfectly reasonable for a mic to be a minimum requirement to play on TG and if I recall correctly, the rules only specify that you only need to be able to hear incoming transmissions.

Mumble should only be used for gunner/driver comms so that they can talk without confusing anyone else in their squad.

The problem I encountered with mumble is people don't know how to shut up. Additionally, people act like idiots when they know people around them can hear them.

A quick question as to how mumble works. Say if I make my push to talk button "B" for mumble will it interfere with BF2's VOIP? The reason I ask if I want to use mumble but understand that maybe not everyone else is using it yet. Will it communicate through mumble and BF2's voip with no problems?

Mumble is great, everybody needs it if they want to enhance realism in PR. Oh and uh don't communicate Tactics through mumble at the start of the game, as everybody can hear everyone else at the countdown to start screen. use VOIP for that.

Re: The purpose of mumble !!! & communication

Mumble should be treated much like TS.

Please, do not spam the channel with ultimately unnecessary chat; if you're commenting on a shot, please feel free to do it through Mumble! Just don't spend a minute or two talking about how we should all walk in while playing Rick Astley's one major hit so that they will be too busy plugging their ears to fight back etc. etc.

It should be used as a close-range communication tool, for squads working in close proximity and working together. It can be useful to SLs to receive or transmit information such as:

    1) Targets and fire priorities (AT: Left of the hill!)
    2) Enemy tactics (They're coming up on our right flank!)
    3) Friendly Movement (Covering fire, so that squad 2 can move up!)
    4) Situation Reports (Hostiles cleared, supplies are inbound via Helicopter.)
    5) Other necessary warnings (Friendly fire, watch it squad 1!; AT firing!)

Otherwise, please keep non-essential chatter to a minimum, and mumble can become vital in coming out on top.

I think it's best just to select different Push to talk keys than Bf2 ones for VOIP. Probably it will interfere, if your squad is nearby and you have 'B' for mumble and Squad VOIP, they will here double echo voices. I'm not sure but this seems the case for all external voice systems to games.

I think it's best we establish ENGLISH as default freaking language on Mumble... Since everyone around you can listen to you and not only your squad, I really don't care what the hell you talking about if you say it in russian, chechen, danish or whatever.

Use TS for that, or even VoIP PLEASE!

    Thanks.

I think the slower framerate is because mumble for some reason employs the hardrive to buffer instead of the memory ram. If you have issues to get ur drive into DMA mode and keep it there, it will slow ur performance. I have the same problem, even the movies at the title screen are lagging.

I dont use TS at all, i just cant stand it. All the (gg) guys are on our own Vent server and we seem to manage just fine. Seems like a cool idea tho maybe ill try it out if i ever decide to reinstall TS again.
