The role of mumble
IMO mumbles role is exclusively that of reducing spam on Teamspeak. If you want to discuss tactics with 2 squadleaders to assault a flag, or talk to an APC squad to get your squad mechanized you can do so with mumble. When you are out of range you have to radio on Teamspeak anyway.
As for use within the squad, your squadmembers might or might not have heard you depending on their settings and distance.
I guess some have been traumatized by the spam on teamspeak when it was newly introduced and still complain about spam on TS, but as long as I played on the server I do not recall having had to endure too much spam on a TG server.
It would be a nice addition, but once the novelity wears off and it is not fun anymore but just a usefull tool I hope it will used when appropriate, just like TS and I hope that people who load mumble, load TS first.

Re: The purpose of mumble !!! & communication
Yup for some reason no matter what channel we were in, if you were close in-game you could hear eachother. Granted it was funny as hell smack-talking with Gunner and others while my squad was holding out at West Objective on Mestia yesterday !
Gunner: "Nardini watch out behind you!"
I turn around to see an AK in my face. Luckily all I hear is 'click' and I proceeded to mow him down instead .
Gunner: "Damn you Nardini forgot to reload!"

For people complaining about spam and whatnot, I'm sorry to hear that, but if everybody have it setup right, you can't deny the usefulness and immersion that it brings.
Settings and tweaks can be done, and are being done. This is experimental software, and doesn't do everything we want, but we want to improve on it as it has immensive potential.
People need to realize that just because they have comms, doesn't mean they should all be talking all the time. Using proper communications is needed, as if it was on TS or other voip system.
About complains of being kicked from squads for not being on Mumble, squad leaders have the right to do whatever they want imo. If we are using Mumble as our primary communication, we want people on Mumble. It's exactly the same as voip squads kicking people for not having voip.
On my squads latetly I just ask if they have Mumble, and tell them to check the PR forums if they don't. They can alt+tab and install without even leaving the game and I already got more than 10 new guys using Mumble that joined my squad and didn't know about it.
Also, the channels in the community Mumble server are setup like that for a reason.

I think this one was funnier same map, Nardini and his squad were holding the top floor of munitions. I was outside but on the top floor ledge
Me:Testing
Nardini and Co: 5 by 5
* Lead fired at source of noise*
Me: Fooled ya
And Cougar. Sometimes talking to the enemy isnt so bad. I lured a BDRM into a ambush by taunting it towards me. And I wasnt smack talking in the back of that APC, I was organizing your drop off.

Re: The purpose of mumble !!! & communication
Tried mumble yesterday. Still need some tweaking or being used to it, but it was awesome. I could communicate with our apc driver and nearby troops in the heat of battle. I think i also could hear dead enemy troops mumbling about being revived.

02-16-2009, 08:06 AM #133Re: The purpose of mumble !!! & communication
Superfast thats the bit I don't get, how would you talk to an apc driver in real life it sure wouldn't be through normal spoken conversation, you would use a radio/comms ie TS. Thats not realistic. As I've said before I am not in any rush to use this yet. With regards to the enemy listening in, it appears that MUMBLE is the tactical equivalent of strapping a 'one man band' outfit on and clumping through the jungle, symbols banging between your knees lol.

As far a mumble goes. Ill wait. All I see is people constantly saying that mumble doesnt work and people can hear you from across the map and so on. When you guys get it right, then Ill get it. Until then, Ill stay with TS.
02-16-2009, 04:26 PM #135Re: The purpose of mumble !!! & communication
All I see is awesomeness and great teamwork.
People that are having issues didn't follow the instructions, or have the wrong version of the software, or might have a bigger issue/conflict with their sound system. But from my experience, everybody is getting it working fine.
If you can't see the potential, fine, but dismissing something for pure ignorance is just weird.
We are working on getting something easier to setup, but until then it's not that hard to get it working.
Now, we have different opinions if the enemy should or shouldn't hear you talking. It's something realistic, but something that hinders gameplay since you will start using bf2 voip when that happens. We are still evaluating, but it's just a matter of defining the channels the way you want. If TG gets their own Mumble server, you guys can do however you see fit and I can help you out setting the ACLs for squad leader communication, like TS.
