    Re: Road Trip

We aren't focusing on the social/economic parts, just the military parts of the war.

Our first battlefield is Chickamauga. This was in 1863 in the southern part of Tenessee.

The Union was advancing from the west on Atlanta. The Confederate army performed delaying actions until Longstreet's corps was moved by train from Virginia after the Gettysburg campaign to Georgia to reinforce the defense. General Bragg (CSA) decided to counterattack the Union advances, and engaged them at Chickamauga. The bloody battle was the second largest in losses during the entire war. The Confederates suffered 28% losses!

    Confederate Commander: Braxton Bragg
    Union Commander: William Rosecrans
    Confederate Forces Engaged: 66,326
    Union Forces Engaged: 58,222
    Winner: Confederacy
    Casualties: 34,624 (16,170 Union and 18,454 Confederate)

Actually, the battlefield is very well marked, so it isn't just empty fields.

There is another battlefield here at Lookout Mountain. That was in 1864 when the Union routed the Confederates off the mountain that guarded the rail junction at Chattanooga. We will also be going there.

I will post some pics when we get back to the hotel.

I have actually been to most of these battlefields while I was in either High School or College. Chickamauga was kind of run down but, that was a long time ago. I was told they were going to "fix it up" wonder if they ever did?

Chattanooga over the past 10 years has taken a considerable interest in tourism. Things are a lot nicer around here now.

It was really nice, so I guess they have. THe visitor center was good with a good movie and the markers were great. There is also a cell phone tour where you call in to a free number to get commentary at the stops - pretty cool.

That's really cool! I'm jealous, looks like a lot of fun. Enjoy it! My wife and I are, hopefully, heading over to Gettysburg sometime this summer. I don't consider myself a "History Buff" but I do enjoy learning about it.

    Two interesting photos.

We ran across this chopper in Tenessee at Savannah. Also, check out this massive civil war cannon. Have not identified it yet, but is was at Pittsburgh Landing on Shiloh battlefield. I think it is likely greater than a 24 pounder, but not sure.

    Re: Road Trip

Wanted to post up a few more pics of our trip...

Three of the bloodiest area of the Shiloh Battlefield:

Hornets Nest - Union General's Prentiss and W.H.L Wallace troops held here for 7 hours while the rest of the Union line collapsed around them. This stand allowed Gen. Grant to setup his final defensive line about a half mile to the rear. The Hornet's Nest was eventually surrounded by the Confederates and the Union troops surrendered.

Bloody Pond - Located between the opposing forces lines, Bloody Pond literally turned red from the blood of soldiers of both sides.

The Peach Orchard - On the left of the Union line at the Hornet's Nest. Holding on almost as long as the Hornet's Nest, the Peach Orchard and the Sunken Road that runs between it and the Nest were the main line of defense on the first days battle.

    Re: Road Trip

The climax of the Battle of Chickamauga occured here. Confederate Gen Longstreet's troops repeatedly assualted this postion held by Union General George Thomas. Thomas stood firm here and the postion was never carried by the Rebels till it was abandoned by during the Union withdrawal on the evening of the 2nd day of battle. Thomas earned the sobriquet "The Rock of Chickamauga" on here on Snodgrass Hill.

    Insides of an AH-1 COBRA...

EDIT: False Alarm. That's the pit of a Thunderbird F-16. Where'd I put the photos of the cobra cockpit? D:

    Re: Road Trip

    Ruggles Artillery Line.

General Ruggles (CSA) assembled 11 batteries of Confederate artillery to mass over 60 guns on the Union position defending the “Hornet’s Nest” at Shiloh Battlefield. The massed artillery was the largest in history to that point. The devastating fire broke the Union position, allowing Confederate infantry to flank and surround the federals, who eventually surrendered the position and over 2000 men.

This paved the way for the Confederate advance on Pittsburgh Landing and the last line of Union defense. General Grant (USA) stopped the advancing Confederates at dusk, allowing the entire Army of the Ohio (USA) to cross the river and reinforce Grant. In the morning the Confederates were the victim of a Union massive counterattack that eventually drove them from the field.

Awesome to see even some of the over 60 guns in a long line on the field of battle.
