each team has 3 mumble channels
    -General channel (TS coord)
    -Squad Leader channel (TS leadership)
    -Waiting Room (TS public)

Using your radio (aka force centre) key works exactly like TS, squad leaders can use this to communication over long distances. In the general channel you should never use
    your radio key.

For positional audio, the squad leader and and general channels are linked. Anyone can talk to anyone else on mumble, regardless of them being in the general channel or SL channel when using position audio.

If you join one of these channels before you've loaded into the game, mumble will default to force centre for all positional audio. If you don't want to listen to lots of peopel talking while load, either join the waiting room or mute mumble until you spawn in (you can bind mute and unmute keys)

    --------------------------------------

Mumble is very useful when you have multiple armor pieces in one squad. each person can talk to just thier driver/gunner making coms much clearer, the low latency obviously helps aswell.

Occaisionally as infantry i'll here an armor crew talking on mumble, but it's negligible compared to the engine noise which travels alot further. I find distant talk on mumble far less distracting than someone talking on TS, partly due to better quality and less noise, and it's also quieter unless they're right next to you.

    Edit:

If you start mumble after you start PR it'll take up to a minute before it links, you just have to wait for it.

Re: Ok we need to pick one

My single fav thing about mumble has to be "squad leader meetings".

Large platoon is staged on Basra. Armor is over watching and all team members are covering their assigned areas.

    Run over to every Sl.

"sl meeting in 1 min behind the IFV"

the squad leaders gather in a group away from the main force. Debate and hash out the next move. Rag on each others failness. Talk about how the next move will go. All done with out disrupting the main groups comms.

It's really a site to see.

In the last scrim the USA side gathered in a large huddle. All 31 players. The CO filled the team in on the first wave of the assault. The SLs for the team then asked the group for SMs. Once everyone was assigned to a sq the individual SLs and Platoon COs gathered their squads in different groups in the main and discussed kit assignments, standing orders and the like. The CO walked thru the ranks helping the individual groups develop their plans as needed.

Every step of this was accomplished with positional audio. Not once was force center needed or used.

During the round armor was relayed targets via positional audio by team members in close proximity. Transport aircraft were able to hear of potental threats while in the air by the members riding in the back. Automatic Rifleman were guided onto targets by other team members with easie.

These are just a few examples of why I love mumble for PR. It can change a game into an immerse experience rivaled by no other game. Honestly I cannot remember a time before mumble and am proud to say I am a part of a community that is embracing new technology to create an environment were teamwork and coordination are the mainstay of our community.

Much love to the SL meetings. Contributes to the immersion of being on the battlefield as well as accessability to the leaders around you while not spamming out anyone who's not involved.

So should we have a poll thread to see what will become our primary use of comms?

For the most part, I think it's fine the way it is. People just use what they want. Nobody ought to be forced to use either-or. TS will remain the staple communication device for TG and Mumble will simply (tremendously) complement the in-game experience.

Those SL Mumble meetings, you guys are talkin about, would look sweet in a...I dunno, firebase!

    end of my 2 cents

SL meetings are helpful indeed. Cougar and I(each leading a separate squad) stopped after an organized retreat on Fools Road, then debated our different angles of attack. SM's were also able to listen in quietly and get an idea of the plan. We essentially had a 12 man squad. Everyone was connected. Pure win and awesomeness...

That is the best part about mumble.
It's also good because you can also here others that aren't in your squad and it does raise the awareness of the team.

    Realistic experience. That is mumble.

Maybe everyone should be on mumble, but squad leaders should be on TS? TS is better as 'the radio' function, but it is an arse to have so many programs open.

or for the unfortunate like me

i love mumble, for many reasons, the main ones being i can have simple effective comms with my gunner in an AFV, i can talk to a squad asking where to go in a trans heli, i can co-ordinate effectively and simply with other SLs, be them other inf SL or armour etc.

had a great moment on fallujah ages ago where my squad with its humvee was pinned by insurgents, told me guys to hold ground whilst i ran back to a friendly LAV sat back 50m, i could tell them exactly were to expect contact and were to go to engage most effectively. and i did this without bothering anyone not concerned (plus they came up and killed/suppressed the ins so my guys could move in and clear the compound)

but this is the major reason why i use mumble > TS. TS and VOIP for some reason on my PC dont like each other, if i have TS running and try to use VOIP then the VOIP is just borken, all that comes out is annoying crackling static crap. and then later the same happens to TS so i have no voice comms at all. VOIP + mumble however works perfectly.

my input. either way its a personal preference

Ive been messing around with Mumble and found another slight issue. I have my voice key as Q and was attempting to set up my mumble talk key as W (Weird yes I know but its my gaming config) but when I press W to talk in mumble it doesnt talk, it begins cycling through the ENTIRE mumble community to anything that starts with a W..

In game as well. I press W and I hear multiple "dings" like its cycling through mumble behind the game.

Even though I don't like the idea of trying to force mumble on people -BF2voip suffises in 95% of cases-, I do like mumble.

The only problem is that I would like it if people played like their fav song while waiting in a vehicle, or sing a bit. With the positional audio its great fun! Yeah i know, I'have gotten smacked down once, and have t resist the urge now. How sad.
