Re: Changes to the Huey...
I can't wait for the new proper attack huey because it will really make it obvious who the pilots are that sit back and wait till then team needs them and sweep in for the kill, compared to the pilots that just fly around and shoot where they get shot from. From my experiences against the attack huey it was almost impossible to kill unless you hit the pilot, even a full BTR-60 clip or 2 direct MANPADS hits and it could usually make it to the carrier.
I do like what they have done with the rest of the choppers since they can crash land if they get shot too much and save the crew instead of instantly blowing up. The transport huey engine fail rate seams to come a bit quick but I have no clue if its realistic just compared to other versions.
Thank you DEVs for making the attack huey killable!|TG-69th|chrisweb89

Re: Changes to the Huey...
I know it's off topic a bit but to continue Startrekern's comment. Chickenhawk by Robert Mason, is one of the best books have read, let alone it being a (anti) war book.
Many didn't have flak jackets to begin with.
Makes me think of the guys out in the field right now and their helis having no armour.. Anyway, I digress. Good book about a Slick pilot in the Vietnam War and what happened. Shame I lent it and never got it back, a must replace mental note then.

Re: Changes to the Huey...
The armor of helicopters in Vietnam was much more primitive than what we have today.
That being said, I'm looking forward to being able to knock down the Hydra hueys once again

Remember that the Attack Huey is going to be same HP as other heavy attack helicopters. If we want to make inexperienced pubbies not use them, then why would we not do that with all Attack Helicopters?
Just because the Huey was a flying tank doesn't mean that now it's going to be a flying glass-piece. Although it will considerably be more vulnerable to fire.
The Attack Huey will still be able to take damage, don't think that if you're going to pilot it you might as well be writing your own death-certificate. IMO the Attack Huey is an awesome helo.

Well, Wiki is pretty cool when its writers lean on academic rigour:
The 'Huey': http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UH-1_Iroquois
The twin (engined) Huey: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UH-1N_Twin_Huey
(check out the beautiful picture of "Marine UH-1Ns lifting from a field outside Baghdad on 10 April 2003". Source same link. Special!)
The latest twin Huey (US Marines) and the badger I guess we will all duck from in game: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UH-1Y_Venom
The Bell Huey family: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell_Huey_family
The list is of lovely endlessness (seemingly).
Which includes the Bell AH-1Z Viper, which "(also called "SuperCobra") is a twin-engine attack helicopter based on the AH-1W SuperCobra" <sourse: Wikipedia author, same webpage following>: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AH-1Z_Viper
I learnt something today. The list goes on but I'll leave it there! That's enough for me to read on. I have to admit, these are the prettiest helis ever made, the Iroquois always being my personal fav' (amazing was designed in the early 50's! - thinking what was about and what it could do. Outstanding as one of the great inovative designs! Very pretty too, like the best designs, and I salute the Heli still going strong, like the pic I mentioned above and all the family).

The attack chopper has been fixed. Yes, that means it will die more, but I dont think it warrant's a whole thread of your rejoicing because of a fix. Believe it or not, some good pilots used, not everyone who used it was a 10 year old kid in brace's who eats n00b's for breakfast. I didn't see anyone crediting the dev's on the fix of the HMG on the chinese APC, or the changes to Insurgency commander.

Eavy come join me in my shrine man. That lovely helo. I have pics. Lots of lovely pics.
Oh hang on. Don't. I'm in bed with one. Such lovely cold steeliness. Such rotorations! Good bye De Havilland Mosquito, your chucked!
Ok maybe not.

I've seen Attack Hueys dive bomb right into an emplacement AA gun, take a rocket to the face, pull up, and return to the carrier unharmed. It's hard to tell if the changes will be good without playing it through for a few weeks, or months. But the current system isn't working for me.

Guys, attack huey was fubar in v0.86. The max hitpoints was increased, but the critical damage wasn't, and on top of that, a typo in python made the damage system never kick in for it, like it did for the other transport choppers.
Already in v0.86 we made the decision to not include heavy attack choppers on the new damage system as it can't be trusted (sometimes the BF2 engine craps out and it doesn't work). We only included transport choppers.
The attack huey was in between by missing some numbers, so we changed them back to the original values, pretty much like the other attack choppers. So it's the same as before the new chopper damage system implemented in v0.86.

I agree with you there man. I cant fly a plane in game for fish (no joystick). Don’t know the right settings for good heli flying with a mouse. And I’m amazed at the flying skills and gunning skills of these players.
If I had more time perhaps I could practice a bit of these bits, go on a course here for example.
In any case it’s not about people who have expertise in any role. It’s about hogging assets (for me) and thinking you are the only person that should use them and novices should not. I think this kind of thinking is insidious in increasing selfish desire and pushing out others.
Perhaps I wont fly a heli (I can just about) or gun because I am scared that others will attack with venomous words and a rabidity for a public beating? And I have seen people shout down public players who wanted to fly because they believed themselves only worthy – and had already a locked squad denoting flying (TOWing, APCing, TANKing), and would argue that public players’ inconsideration and plead with them, or if that doesn’t work get irate with them. If there is a Commander- get them on their side..
Perhaps personally I have seen too much of this kind of thing in rl and so hate it and work against it with all the power this little bundle of energy can - if can act against it...
It’s not about skill of many for me as I respect it for what it is and appreciate it as I ground pound. It’s about that dastardly Self behaviour, for me. Maybe it is because of elitism formenting it. But I do see time and again the same names in the same assets, same switching, same names in squads. So what am I to do but fulfil the same role myself - hang out with the public and greet them.
Lowering the armour is of course good. A gaming issue. Expertise in flying is fine. My problem is not about that in any asset. Expertise is fine, I respect it. It is those that act selfishly I don’t: you know, Teamswitching for assets, Asset Hoarding, hiding behind Tags to get/keep the assets etc. Different kettle of fish. This is about actual respect. I can’t underline it enough and so pipe on.
And, finally, I’m sorry if it sounded I was being aggressive in my stance, I wasn’t and guess context translation in a few lines is difficult to add. I was being a bit jokey, tongue in cheek, taking the Mick out of myself more so than anything as I am prone to do (you should have seen what I didn’t post!). But I guess the context of that is more of emphasise on Humour and Community Spirit and people, and respecting those that can fly, or everyone actually; underlining the very nature of what is the actual criteria. I was well aware that people can read something, into something, so simple without it being laid out. But allowed it for discourse, and rightfully you said as you did – but to me I will go one step further and say people don’t act right at times, tagged or not.
Funny how you can add context in a few lines to build a picture over time, with others' thoughts. But certainly I see your point and am behind you on that and I did take it there was some critism in the thead starters' words. I think a few of us did. My prior post was of sarcasm to allude to the mailaise as I see it. The emphasise being as said in the above paragraph.
Long post :/ but hey, how else am I to explain.
