    Re: Mumble... Yes or No?

Oh, apparently I need to spread some rep around before giving it to Wickens again.

The only thing mumble has going for it is the positional audio, which is a big thing but is the only thing it offers that other systems don't. I also think it is causing my laggy rubber banding issues on certain maps (Korengal and Fool's Road) some of the time because I only have those issue when running mumble. Could be the program itself, could be an interaction with another program. It goes away if I turn off mumble when I have the issues.

The following features would make any VOIP awesome:
    Positional audio.
Players muted when not in game.
Auto assignment to team on join.
Ability to assign hotkeys to switch available channels easily (like TS).
Channel availability limited to admin, team and team sub channels (Sl, Transport, CAS etc) when in game.
[Admin channel would work like this: 'Admins' are the players tagged as admins in the VIOP. When a player needs an admin he can hit an alert specific hotkey that notifies all admins with an audio cue letting them know someone needs assistance and transfers the player to the admin channel. The admin can then join that channel when ready and resolve the issue. When done the player would use their hotkey to go back to their appropriate team channel manually.]
    Low network/CPU usage.
Working overlay to see who is talking on the subchannels the player is in (not needed for positional).
Just because everyone does something does not mean that it is right to do.

+Rep to Wickens if I could....

I use mumble every time I play. So what.

People who don't use it have their own reasons. Period. You have as much right to make them use it as you do in deciding their wardrobe for the day or what they'll eat at lunch. If you guessed none, you would be right.

    He wants fries with that.

I really can't think of anything else to add. Everything's been said about Mumble. I guess I can only hope that everyone uses it.

I read somewhere that any TG admin who wants admin rights in mumble will gladly be given it if they ask. The admin coverage for mumble may be a little less than in TS(channal and server admin type) but there are many non TG players and a few TG players who have admin rights and can move/kick people if needed.

Well, thanks for the responses to my question. I'm glad to see our admins have control. Now I also now it is of use to report mis-use.

On a general note, I've come to the conclusion that having one squadmember in mumble is very useful at times. This can be the SL, or also a "radio operator". Other then that, it is specifically useful to have a mumble user in each transport vehicle.

It is in the coordination with transport squads that the key, and perhaps only advantage of mumble lies. We should all be mindfull though not to let mumble interfere with command hierarchy. Let's keep using that co if someone makes the effort. Specifically, tell the co

-Where the enemies are; relay everything that you see and is not friendly or dead to him (trees are friendly btw).

-Sitreps; what is going on and what are you planning to do with your squad.

    Last post was a rant.

But before moving on, can we please read peoples posts thoroughly before responding to them. My last post received neg rep because someone didn't understand who it was directed at.

Ok, I will calm down, but why can't people be bothered to download mumble, that still bothers me. And if you cannot read this post carefully enough, let me point out this is directed at people who do not want to get mumble because of laziness solely. Nobody else is involved.

Yeah guys, I apologise if I've pressured anyone in to using mumble when they didn't want to.

TG is one of the few places where you don't worry about if the majority of the team is trying to work together, so most peeps have some kind of connection to a 3rd party VOIP app to lubricate the game, its other servers that need to enforce use of such programs to achieve the high level of teamwork taht TG enjoys, and such servers exist so there is no reason for anyone to be a mumble extremist in any manner.

    Re: Mumble... Yes or No?

No apologies needed Rudd, I think more and more people will adopt Mumble over time and it will also be interesting to see what the future holds for TS3etc. I also think you may have coined a new phrase in 'Mumble extremist' lol!

My concern is that the mission becomes 'to execute the plan' rather than the plan being something you use to complete the mission. To put that in context then, Mumble can be an extremely useful tool to help you achieve your objectives in game by giving additional comms tools, i.e. positional audio. What it sometimes becomes is a distraction for ill disciplined squad members due to everyone becoming a defacto radio man, the same as any comms tool can be, TS can do the same to players but due to it's non-positional nature and the fact that everyone in channel can hear this is usually clamped down on.

Over use of comms in game is a huge distraction for me, I often mute TS and Mumble in CQB where I need to hear everything. An awful lot of comms in game is totally uneccessary and people chatting when inapproriate has gotten me killed countless times. I think people using Mumble need to ask themselves do I need to speak to that guy over there in a different squad, is it necessary for me to carry out what I am doing. Would you do it over TS so everyone can hear, i.e. is it that important. Don't use it for idle chit chat unless the situation allows you too. Also if both SL's are nearby and they are talking, having a meeting etc be quiet, listen, that's realism for you.

I like TS but I can see the plusses and minuses of Mumble, positional audio is a huge bonus. However like all tools it depends on who's using it, on the one hand it allows me to say very quickly "Dispo, on your left 50 metres" when we are not on the same squad. It also allows members of differing squads to request meds and ammo be shared etc. Unfortunately it also adds to the distractions that some players seem already to struggle to cope with. If you are already being asked why you aren't carrying out orders should you really be chatting with some guy from another squad, just because he's next to you, do you think that would wash in RL. I know I've been guilty of it as an SM and I go mad about this stuff as SL lol so I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Al's point about the circumvention of the chain of command is highly relevant imo. Even TS can be used to co-ordinate behind the CO's back as it were. With the shiny newness of Mumble lets remind ourselves not to undermine people who step up to CO (salutes), instead lets use all our comms tools to co-ordinate and beter carry out the CO' orders.

Also as squad members, follow your own squad leaders orders and requests and don't wander off and decide to link up with other squads. Your an sm, the SL is not interested in your theory about linking squads up because it's fun on mumble. If the SL wants to co-ordinate with another squad he will, it's none of your business, don't like it, run your own squad or at the very least get out of the one your in. Don't give your ammo to another squad without first checking with your SL, don't run off reviving without checking with your SL. It's your SL's decision and he needs to know where you are, being able to communicate with other squads doesn't suddenly make you and autonamous freelancer.

Good Sl's will ask another SL if they can send a medic to help. The SL then brings the whole squad over as cover to ensure a successful revive and prevent the loss of another medic. If you freelance and get nailed you then have 2 squads without a medic and potentially half a dozen plus casualties.

Mumble is cool but it's still PR, all the same rules about following orders apply, the same discipline is required for good, realistic and effective play. Don't become 'blinded by the light' of Mumble>
