    Smurfs, squad leading and TG

"Smurf" in PR jargon means those not in your squad. I have lately been referring to, with some disrespect, anyone who I do not regularly play with as a smurf regardless of their color on the mini-map.

This shift in definition has come about because of two things. First, for a long while I've been playing with only a dozen or so very talented, very experienced people. Second, I've come to expect the very least from those people who are not immediately recognizable as part of my A-team. It is of course in fact usually a smart tactical decision to not trust the medic in the other squad to help you out, or the AR in the other squad to watch your flank, simply because experience has shown these things don't happen often. It is an entirely different thing however to find yourself with the attitude that everyone not on your individual A-Team is without value. Most importantly it is not a good attitude to take as a leader.

    Personal anecdote time.

Recently I joined the server with none of my personal a-team playing, map being Ramiel, team USArmy. I took over an INF squad soon after joining. I composed the team, assigned kits, went over limited team rules; "keep good spacing and cover, don't separate from the squad, watch each others backs," and procured some questionable striker transport from a certain 69th member to the south side of the city. En-route i went over our first objective. Move into the city, set up an OP with myself and the specialist on a tall building to gather intel, with the remaining team members holding a perimeter around the building.

Skip to the AAR. The specialist couldn't throw the rope up. The perimeter had two completely open sectors when there were only three to watch. As i tried to instruct the specialist on how to use his kit, team members came into contact with a technical .50cal from the north. One casualty. Medic did not execute proper procedure to revive casualty. One more casualty. As i went around to the side of the building under fire to assist, a PKM took me down at medium range from the east. I immediately rage quit. The USArmy now had zero operating inf squads.

Smurfs can't cover. Smurfs can't throw a rope to its highest point. Smurfs can't react to contact. Smurfs can't shoot ****. If I were playing with X, i thought, that engagement would have never happened. We would have gotten the OP up, gathered good intel on enemy disposition and movement in under a minute, and withdrawn with less than a few rounds fired.

Then I realized something. Before i started playing with my personal A-team, my squad never consistently had a 5:1 KDR. We never took out five caches in one round. Failures don't just happen a few times a round with normal squads, in the long run they happen in a range around half the time you seek an objective.

If you only lead those with high talent, you have an easy job, a high success rate, and so naturally a huge penis. But If everyone is a smurf to you, you leave no possible room for team work. On TG we have many, many extremely effective squads. Effective teams are far less common. Good squads come from good players, but good teams come from good squad leaders.

I think if we all make an effort in the new year to check our A-team lists at the server lobby, TG will only benefit.

Paine raises some good points - get out of your comfort zones - not only as SLs but also as SMs.

The 'serious business' avatar makes the post even more enjoyable to read! Excellent anecdote and insight, and even the good squad members had to start somewhere.
Just because everyone does something does not mean that it is right to do.

Great post and although it can be annoying in the short term, helping other players and showing them how to do things like paine said were wrong with his squad will only make future playing even funner.

Re: Smurfs, squad leading and TG

Good post. I thought the OP was going to be a rant on inexperienced / lower skill / new players, but I really like where it ended up, which was not where I thought it was going initially.

I have seen (a couple times, not often) here in this server where more experienced players get very frustrated or upset with less skilled / experienced players. I think that some of the guys who have been playing since .5 and know every nook and cranny of every map may have forgotten what it is to be new to PR (and to take it a step further, to the higher level of play expected on this server in particular). I think that it would do all of us well to remember that PR in general is a relatively small community (compared to vBF2 or COD, etc.) and I think that new people are finding their way to it all the time (I myself only learned about PR within the last 6-8 months or so).

If all the experienced players were to snub all of the noobs as they come in to PR, they may get a bad taste in their mouth and never return. Now I know we are a long way from running out of players, but I would think that the logical extension of an elitist / short tempered attitude would after a period of time tend to shrink the overall pool of players. And I would hate to see that happen, as this is a great community and server and I love playing here and hope to continue to do so for a long time. But people stop playing all the time for various reasons, and the only way to keep the populations up long term is to keep fresh recruits coming in.

So instead of getting frustrated/upset with some nublets, take the time to be nice to them and show them the ropes a little bit. Remember, we were all noobs once!

    Remember:

    Take your noob's medic kit when he is down, and your squad will live today;
teach your medic how to do his job properly, and your squad will live forever!

Just my .02 from someone who is relatively new to the community.

I'm the other Randy Shughart (in TG).

If you don't know who the real life Randy Shughart was, learn about him here, here, and here.

Those of us who read the forums are like the Christians. Christianity was not intended for everyone, rather for the few to go forth amongst the many (pub server) and spread the good news (tactics/knowledge). So take the opportinity to witness (lead by example) to a heathen (smurf) by showing them the TG way! Amen!

Re: Smurfs, squad leading and TG

I don't like the word "smurf", too many people using it to say "noob", thinking if they say "noob" people will think them being one... Well, for me, it's the same. Call someone a smurf, I will know you're a noob.

There is one thing I have noticed playing on TG...
We had few amazing rounds on this server, joining multiple squads in a larger task force and on some rounds you really feel like being in a platoon, with command structure and everything. That's what I like the most about playing on TG. That's why I try to squad-lead new guys with very little experience, to implement them into the bigger picture, and give them a chance to feel how awesome PR battles can be.
Now the problem - most of the new guys just don't care about all those things!

When you think about it, it makes sense... Average new guy is a person who bought BF2, and saw some pictures or videos of PR, and was attracted to the mod just because it does look way better then vBF2, and you get some awesome killing vehicles and weapons, and to see all the maps and all the vehicles/weapons, it will take you about one month. Compare that to two-hours-of-play CoD6.
That's the average new guy in PR. He just don't care about fighting in a formation, combining inf with apcs, has no clue what a platoon is, and he just don't give a damn about it.

On Karbala once Gen Jok3r made a inf squad filled with noobs/smurfs, I joined in as AR, to help him. Dispo was leading stryker team, Cougar was into one of those epic convoy actions, other great players and popular inf SLs like Rudd moving along strykers... I thought to myself "now you new guys will not believe this being possible", having in mind how cool guy GenJok3r is, and how cool his voice is.
But the new guys couldn't/shouldn't do not one single thing Jok3r told them. "Do not spawn!" - they all spawn. "Hold here!", and everyone holds... for 30secs. "Get on the .50, watch east!" - in about 2 mins a technical comes from E killing everybody, without being spotted.

You can't build anybody into a good squad member. Even thou they're not noobs, let's face it, some people just don't care.
I guess we can call them smurfs.

Re: Smurfs, squad leading and TG

I lead two squads yesterday with guys that I had not ever seen or been in squads with (One in particular I have seen and talked to over mumble, but had never had him in my squad).

Granted, I am usually a bit hectic and yell a lot when something doesn't get done properly (and I am ALWAYS watching), but I was frequently annoyed by some of their faults.

Then I realized something; they're not bad players, I'm just running them thin and trying to get too much out of them.

I started slowing my own pace, and lead the charge marking cover and safe paths through the AR fire overhead (Those trenches in Kashan work wonders for moving up to an enemy occupied bunker), and where to stay to be ready to assault. A few times we were wiped, often because I got a little ahead of myself (because while I may be a MOUT/CQB pwnz0rcoptr, they aren't, but are actually very good when they have time to set up and aren't being rushed and rushed to get to the next objective.

After the Kashan round, a few screw ups, and a thinking change later, Qwai 16 came about, and we were on the US.

I took it upon our squad to demo the bridges, and to mine-trap the water crossing (with all three flags being in the 8 row, and two of them on the Chinese side it was going to be a tough enough fight). We drove quickly in our humvee to blow both bridges before a single vehicle passed, and then returned to main for ammo before promptly moving to the water crossing and mining it up (mined along the chinese end of the crossing, with a gap in the mines at the road area, where C4 was placed) and had my squad all hold ambush and reconnaissance positions, and thought about how the terrain benefited us while placing our squadmembers.

Now, we were an organized bunch, and had a trap set up for any vehicles going across as well as a good fighting position against enemy infantry. During our time at that area, our ambush went by the books, our SAW putting just a tiny bit of pressure as they passed him, to make him rush down the slope right over our C4 trap, which was promptly blown (6 kills). Some of the same infantry walked back to our area, and we took them out without too many issues as long as I called my squad to retreat to our ambush positions (which kept both the squad and the enemy on their toes, gave us time to regroup, and gave me time to breath between assaults as I dictated orders of where everyone should be and how to engage the enemy)

I made a few mistakes (like letting a silly marksman take out my AR as I was waiting for a good opportunity to gun more of his squad down, though in the end we stopped their attack quick and clean, and got him back up), but I learned from the Kashan round where my squad's strengths were and took that under my thought process. We ended the round with 30 or so kills (1 full Transport, 1 FAV, and quite a lot of infantry), and a minimal amount of deaths and ended up capturing the enemy main base.

Just because they're a smurf and you're not having a great deal of luck attempting to lead them doesn't mean you can't try to change things up to better suit their strengths rather than stretch and strain their collective weaknesses. Or maybe I just yell a lot and they got sick of my yelling.
