Question Ventrilo and Tactical Gaming, Keybindings and distribution.

    Hello, all -

I've recently devised a scheme for using rooms and keybinds which allows for personality agnostic comms within Ventrilo which mimic that of the in-game PR comms (squad can talk to squad, and Commander and SLs can converse separately), as well as provides comms between individual SLs, even without a field Commander.

It's a bit like wiring up an intercom system in a building -- some rooms can talk to other rooms, regardless of who is inside. The problem lies in the need for several Bindings profiles, one for each room to handle all permutations. This is an unfortunate truth to the nature of Ventrilo (and to these types of old-school logic problems), but at least the possibility for such a room-based system exists. In TS3 such a thing can only be done with "Whisper Lists", which is not much of a solution due to the need for an ALT-TAB whenever a personnel change occurs. I'm not sure about Mumble, but perhaps someone can fill me in later in this thread. Ventrilo allows for key binds to both move you from room to room, as well as to select new Bindings profiles as "active", which is the real benefit to the "Intercom Solution", as I've come to think of it.

In ventrilo2.ini, the bindings ids are cross-indexed with your user id, both of which make a simple manual cut-and-paste from one master .ini into the .ini files of my guildmates less-than-ideal since pre-existing bindings or user ids will yield effects other than those intended. Likewise, this offers no easy way for individual users to determine their own keybinds. In fact, as with any hard-coded solution, there are several limitations regarding the scale of the solution using a manual distribution method.

So, my question, before I sit down an develop an app to make this frictionless: is there a nifty third-party app, or method that I have not yet discovered within Vent itself, which can enable the export and import of Keybindings profiles?

Better yet, is there a better comm package out there which allows for custom "wiring" to be shared globally with all users? I was hoping someone might know some wicked tricks with Vent servers that could get a set of bindings to be "automagically" loaded into my users' universes, but my guess is that this is not part of the Vent API as Googling has turned up nothing.

I appreciate any and all comments, tips, feedback, etc. Thanks to everyone who's read this far.

Mumble allows you to speak to everyone that is very close to you, and also has a channel for squad leaders that works like a radio. It's simple, and it works, and the entire PR community uses it.

TG's official platform is TS3 and I doubt anyone will prefer Ventrilo over Mumble anyway.

Yeah, it really sounds like you've put a lot of time and effort into this, but most of the PR community uses mumble. Its biggest advantage is positional audio, like in ArmA. If there's a blue guy next to you, you can talk to him. If he's far away and to your left, he sounds like he's far away and to your left. As he gets closer, he sounds closer. I don't know of any other voip program that has that ability, and it also has excellent clarity and low latency. PR's mumble server is set up with SL channels as well, so all of the SLs can communicate directly. And to top it all off, it's already very popular with players. It's tough to beat.

The scenario you described with Mumble doesn't solve for intra-squad communication when the squad is not in the same physical location. If I'm an Insurgent, okay ... that's realistic, but the USMC is perfectly capable of communications across distance, regardless of how small the unit. Unless Mumble can provide Commander, SL, and Squad radios, in addition to the location-based audio, it's really not the ideal solution. I'll have to give it a looksee again and see what's what, I suppose. It's been a while since I checked out the admin options.

It does have all these things in the SL channel where you can force center and everyone in the SL channel can hear you from across the map.

And for the intra squad comms. there's BF2 VOIP, which is not the best there is in quality, but gets the job done anyhow.

Yeah, the built-in VOIP works for comms within your squad. The squad leaders, who are all in the SL mumble channel, can "force center," which means they broadcast to everybody in that channel at normal volume regardless of distance. As long as the CO is also in that channel, all of the leadership can communicate easily and in real time. I highly recommend you install mumble and check it out, if for no other reason than to see what you can try to improve upon. If you think you can make improvements, the PR or Mumble DEVs would love the help, I'm sure.

I hear you -- my guild is not primarily a PR guild, however, and we are playing some games with no built-in VOIP, so I'm trying to find an ideal solution which is game-independent.

It sounds like I'm going to building an app which allows for a complex set of Keybindings profiles, based on role, to be distributed amongst members of a clan such that set up is dummyproof and allows for individual preference of specific key binds, including changing rooms/roles without alt-tabbing.

    Mumble Local = Face-to-face talking
    Mumble SL = Inter-squad radio
BF2 VoIP = Internal squad radio
BF2 CO VoIP = SL <-> Commander radio

Those four combined accomplishes everything PR needs them to accomplish -- If you're looking to do this for other games I'd suggest making a post in forums dealing with those games, since this subforum is specifically about PR. TG has other forums, though, some specifically about technical development. *points at the 'forums' button at the top*

The issue is, though, if you go with a PRIVATE, game-independent system, not everyone will use your system across all games .. so in PR, we'll still use mumble and you won't be able to communicate with us, etc. It's probably best if you use what's here already.

The basic thing people are trying to tell you imo, hannibal, is: if you want to connect with the TG community the best way is for you and your friends to use mumble. You culd use your ventrilo too, as we use TS too. TG will never use ventrilo as a group.

xfire, mumble, TS, in-game VOIP, in-game CO to SL VOIP, AOL AIM in-game messaging, msn messaging in-game, texting in-game, cell phone calls in game, land line calls in-game, oh my....................Ventrillo would just overload it all a bit too much. Plus then you are prone to the ventrillo harassers who will then put their video on youtube.
