Re: defense, defense, defense!
There, Al, I edited the spelling of this thread topic so it makes sense to Americans. I have no idea what "defence" is...

One thing to add.
Defenders choose the location a battle will take place.
Attackers choose the time a battle will take place.
Between the two, I generally prefer to chose the ground on which to fight.|TG-1stMIP|Coridon

Re: defence, defence, defence!
Thanks for posting this its very relevant.... having just come from the TG server with about 10-15 TG players online, all I saw was ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK....
was really sad.... Al your strategy works, simply because it makes sense
i wish more people would realize this.... but im sure it will come with time

Re: defence, defence, defence!
Fuzzhead,
Try to get on our server Sundays around 2000 EST. We'll probably have enough TGers on to give you a good impression of how things are run around here.
Better yet, keep your eye on the password nights thread.|TG-1stMIP|Coridon

Re: defence, defence, defence!
I'm very glad to see the amount of responses in the thread. With that the main goal of my post has been reached: to make people think and talk about aasV2 strategies on a global level.
I hope people will also add other strategies to the thread, or clarify in which situations this kind of defensive plan can work in their opinion. I have tried it only once as a CO, worked great then and was very tense because the whole team was working for a 2 man team to move on to the next control group.
Very good recap, exactly what I mean.
Just pay attention to your loading screen and all will be revealed. If you doubt at any time, remember that you are on TG, ask the question.
The new patch is on the server too.

Re: defence, defence, defence!
Actually, the loading screen isn't totally accurate for all maps with the new patch (e.g. Muttrah City). The best way to see what CP you need to assault or defend is to watch the top left of your screen for the periodically updated objectives.

Re: defence, defence, defence!
I haven't been squadleading at all lately because I'm trying to re-accla... re-accli... re-adjust to the BF2 setting. And with PR, it's even rougher, heh.
When I finally do take up the SL role again, you can be sure that I'll volunteer for a defensive or recon job every time I get the chance. I'm not so good at attacking, and the fight always manages to find me anyway.

Re: defence, defence, defence!
I just wanted to recap a CO round I played yesterday, also in the light of my "defense!" thread.
When I grabbed CO, we were losing north bridge and later we lost temple. All squads were very responsive. We were able to get temple back with a three squad assault to get off bleed.
Squad seven was defending the train all alone during this while under continues attack. In the end we won with about 10-20 tickets. I can tell you it was because of the cooperation we won, because the score list indicated that the opfor (with a seventh squad in them) had some huge kill ratios highly surpassing the best scoring brits.
I only have a screenshot of when we had fought back from bleed to north bridge. This position was held until the end of the game.
I had one squad (8) that was constantly wanting to attack. Therefore I used that inclination to attack and had them as the only squad attacking south bridge. They were unsuccessful in capping that cp, but it wasn't necessary to do that.

As you can see in the screen shot, you have 7 and two on the left at train & west of north bridge, then (left to right) you see 8 ready to attack south, 6 which had on flag duty, then 1 and then 9. As you can see, 6,1 and 9 were forming a line W-E.
I had given the defending squads the mission to support their neighbours, and prevent the enemy from being able to launch an assault from the north to attack north bridge from high ground.
I believe the round demonstrates the value of robust defense. The squads held this line for 20 to 30 minutes I estimate, which in BF is loooong time. All the squads saw action regularly.
9 and 6 were able to flank the enemy with deadly force at one time when the enemy took out squad 1 and was camping their rally points. 1&9 just closed the book and squashed the fly. In fact the screen shot seems to be taken right at this time. You can see that squad nine is sending over his whole squad to the west on my orders. They disengaged from the south with admirable speed. South of one there is a whole squad that is about to wipe out 1.
Thanks to all the players for a fun round. I will post this post in the defense! thread as well.Last edited by BigGaayAl; 03-03-2007 at 01:56 PM.

Re: defence, defence, defence!
Al, I was SL of squad 7, mostly comprised of 1st-MIp, with John.C as sargent of Alpha fireteam and two able men, Stone... and Julian.. as my Bravo.
I have absolutely no problem with holding a flag an entire round, as the longer you defend, the more you learn about the surrounding territory and the enemy's habits. We had a graet defense going at Tunnel, with Alpha low on the river watching SW and Bravo holding slighter North and up on the hill. We repelled about three incursions from across the river. Once the enemy flank Bravo and pushed Bravo back into the Tunnel. There we supressed two more incursions, things got serious, and I called for Alpha to back us up.
John.C had firm control of Alpha all the time, and all went well. In the last moments of the game, we attempted that helo incursion to South Bridge. The lag was crazy bad. I should have immediately turned around and put the Helo back down on the UCB, but in stead crashed into the mountains at South Bridge, with a full squad as my cargo. I almost lost the round for everyone at that moment.
The round ended moments later.
I remember John.C saying that that was one of the best he had ever played (certainly and exageration, but made me feel good).
Excellent work dealing with the squad-what-wanted-to-be-attacking-always, and great strategy with the front on the North side of the river.
Always great to see you in game (and on my side!).
