Just another shot of what can be done. The 160th is too hardcore to just deploy from the carrier deck...

The first thing I do in the event of chopper noob name calling is perform a low level loop-d-loop. Half the jerks jump out and die... those with faith survive the maneuver and then get the rest of their taxi ride

I'm probably going to have to remove my TG tags for that :|

Just to add to this: Until I got my new kickbutt sound card, I was using low sound quality, and you don't get to hear when the whining stops and the chops start. If you have it on this setting, a good 40 second count before throttling up ensures a decent take-off. If you are unsure, apply some throttle and see how responsive the chopper is, if it's very slow to lift, go to 0 throttle ASAP and wait a few more seconds on the pad then try again.

Also, even when you can take off, it still takes a good 30 or so more seconds for choppers to realize their power, so hovering or flying around in safe space before venturing out is a good idea. If you want to see what I am talking about, hop into a little bird, take off when you hear the chop, and try to ascend at full throttle straight up, you'll notice your altimeter gaining speed the more and more the bird warms up.

I was in a Little Bird once and took that ride. Had to tell the pilot I'd be throwing up on his helmet if he did it again!

I got some good advice and ran Muttrah City singleplayer and managed to land the LB on the Hotel rooftop after a bit of practice. The carrier dock, though, is another matter entirely!

What single player maps have helos? How do you get a pilot kit without a second player on an empty map?

These are my frustrations with practicing flying outside of a live server.

You don't want single player. You want to go to multiplayer and then Create Local. Pick a map w/ a Carrier on it (you can see this on the map preview), add it to the rotation, then click start.

Once you're in game, open the console ('~' by default) and type this:

    sv.numPlayersNeededToStart 1 (not case sensitive)

Lifesaver! I was getting PO'd with my single player bot-mates, who were running off with the bloody helo's all the time!

This will stop me having arguments with people that don't exist!

    +rep to WhiskeySix

    Other useful commands:

«sv.startdelay 15» (sets the game start timer. Effective at the restart of the map)
«admin.restartmap» (once you run out of helos )
«sv.mandowntime 10» (sets spawn timer to xx seconds. In case your chute fails. )

Should some of this be a sticky somewhere ?

all excellent comments. i myself had a bit of difficulty also so i stayed away from the birds but now that i see its not me and just how they are designed in the mod i'll be back in the saddle shortly. good call on the tilda commands. i too was getting frustrated with npcs grabbing rides and crashing.

    Re: Helo lessons?

Sometimes the birds can be righted when they're on their side. I recovered a few on the carrier that way last night. Oddly though I couldn't land the birds on the deck; they kept bouncing off the surface and skidding over the side. I guess I still need more practice too.
