Re: The use of Racial names!
It's simple common sense, really, it's not like you'd use the N word and any racial slur is just as bad.
Feel free to mock the Irish though.
I think you are blowing the potential censorship out of proportion."It's nothing to do with Stalker, really"

Re: The use of Racial names!
this begs the question, does everyone get so offended when they watch a movie about Vietnam, i love the film Full Metal Jacket... one of my all time favorites... the word gook is used several times... Gerry for the Germans, limey for the Brits and yanks for the Americans.... now come one i have played several games as a Chinese soldier against the British, and lots of people Americans usually say "i got the limey bastard" or words to that effect... i don't get all offended i realise that its a game, and have a thicker skin than that.
this isn't personal dirtboy, clearly you have been offended by this, but its just a case of people getting that far into the game and immersing themselves into their "character" you shouldn't be offended by this... and as the post above has said where does it end... just my thoughts on this... its a game, we all play it and we all think we are Whichever film character you like most when we are gunning down the enemy... that's all.

Re: The use of Racial names!
I'm glad you brought this up so that it can be cleaned up. Although, I always just call the other team "enemy", I am surprised to hear that Chinaman is an improper way to refer to a Chinese soldier. Although, I have not used the word, I was not aware that gook was really a racial thing anymore than bogey or charlie. I had heard that soldiers had been using the term in the Middle East which I though was a tip of the hat to the Vietnam era vets rather than something with racial meaning. However, if anyone feels it is racial, it does not belong.

Most dictionary entries list this as an offensive term, and dictionaries really just chart common usage of terms.
Apparently not many people know this. I'm surprised. You guys are being fooled by the descriptive nature of the term. But just because it's a descriptive term doesn't mean it's not used as a racial epithet.
Many dated racial terms are offensive today because they aren't in common use (which means that the meaning and usage of the term doesn't get updated) and they date back to a time when the community of users of the term really thought that the race of people they were referring to were inferior to them.

Re: The use of Racial names!
I don't think IOOB is taking the question too far - his questions call out reasonable and logical ends to this sort of discussion: how far does it go?
That said, TG has rules in place that restrict speech; there is no freedom of speech amendment to the TG rules. Considering this, I'd imagine that strictly speaking, "bastard" is as far out of play, as "cracker," "chinaman" or any other racially-oriented word.
In the end, no one really loses by speech being limited in the above fashion, but people can be reasonably put out (lose) by the unlimited speech - even if the speech isn't intended to do harm. Then the community at large (which is worldwide!) loses out, because offended parties leave.
Still, all the above said, it feels a little weird/ironic to be discussing speech issues in a game where people are simulating combat - where the objective is to kill off your opponents...

Re: The use of Racial names!
It's about the people playing the game, not the game itself, I don't see it as particularly ironic.
Also, with reguards to films, they are reflecting what happened at the time, we are sitting in chairs talking to real people in a game, there is an extremely large difference that I'm surprised isn't evident."It's nothing to do with Stalker, really"

Re: The use of Racial names!
"DIE you ethnically diverse/different sexual orientation/person who doesnt believe in the same god I do/son of a gun" just doesnt have the same ring to it.
And any of the guys on any frontline around the world are using the terms daily. Yes there is a large difference to war and games. We are gaming at war not gaming at a perfect world. I am sure that SIM's does not include the kind of language that would ever need to be censored heavily but we aren't playing sims and no one is personally attacking anyone here.
Just trying to put it on the table.

Re: The use of Racial names!
H'bout "contact"? As in "Contacts, at least three, northeast of flag"... then you can use the same word regardless of which team/map/mod/game you're playing.
edit: in otherwords, just follow the SOP for reporting contacts: http://www.tacticalgamer.com/battlef...ct-report.html

Re: The use of Racial names!
mm, im not big on racism, but i take it with a grain of salt. all around the world you will see comments from british/czech/swedish/the rest of europe russia and asia about how stupid yanks are and everytime i see the word yank it steems me up, but you know. we're so stupid because we have one of the best economys and THE best military in the world, when someone needs settin straight.......who ya gonna call?.............and for some reason everyone seems to follow us, from canada to britain to even australia.
so the point i'm getting to is, take pride in your heritage/country/beliefs, they always have been and always will be under fire from someone who doesn't give a ****
and when someone says something messed up just brush it off and continue on.
