AAR March 17th
Great games tonight! First off I wanna say sorry for being a bit bossy but i really needed to tell people to use local for tanks and to keep silly stuff of voip ('i cant believe i missed'). Also there wasnt any strong leadership/communication so I tried to take charge and include others ideas to that we could secure and defend objectives more easily.
I had a blast on Odessa even though we lost. Turbo(i think) decided that we all rush the Square once we spawned during the 2nd round, and it worked!. Also big props to Munchkin, Turbo, friedfish and others for sticking with me and taking that Group Headquarters using cover rather than out gunning them.
One thing that flankers really need to do: bounding overwatch, this way you can keep more men alive as reinforcements are hard to come back if you are deep and enemy territory. Hopefully I can get 3/4 others to help me out and test this out.

Re: AAR March 17th
I had a blast once Drunken took command - the games were kinda aimless beforehand. However, on Odessa we got some real strategies going and I personally learnt a great deal.
Here's the deal on local VOIP:
- If you're a tank crew, use local channel.
- If you're in your spawn area with a number of other players, use your local channel to talk with them.
- If you're moving as a group, use local channel.
- If you sight an enemy tank, use the team channel to communicate that information and its grid location.
Please try and keep the miscellaneous team chat to a minimum. We're here to have fun, but hearing play-by-play reports of what your cat is doing to your computer isn't all that enjoyable.

Re: AAR March 17th
Yeah, there was a lot of meaningless babble going on as the server became populated. I was really surprised to only see six people on around 2100 EST when I joined. It was kind of eerie at the time because no one was talking. Just Santa and I on the same team, fixing bayonets next to each other and scraping them across the ground as close as possible to the other's face. Glad to see the good things in life transcend specific games...

A friendly SMG'er apparently saw my approach, wanted to catch up so just sprinted to my position and opened fire on the enemy from about 80 meters away while standing over me, obviously hitting nothing but alerting everyone to my position. Ee gads, man!!!
The same thing happened over and over again on the snowy airfield/FLAK 88 map where I was sniping from cover and then two or three SMG'ers would see me (a friendly) and run over and fire standing about two feet away from my prone self. Believe me, there's nothing a friendly sniper wants more than for you to stand beside him and empty a drum of ammo to announce "HERE I AM!!!".
I think the game is awesome and will get better as more people get accustomed, but as in real life, a lot depends on the guys to your right and to your left. Just keep in mind at any given time what your actions might do for your team rather than just trying to get the "kill" every time you see a flicker of motion in the distance.
BTW, I think in every instance it wasn't a "regular" who did these things, so more than likely this post won't be read by the people who need it most. Ah well...|TG-1stMIP|Coridon

Re: AAR March 17th
I insulted you a lot as well Coridon. Its so corny in this game, your character says something in a different language but you see in text just "*Insult*".
Anyway, Odessa was the highlight. First round we kept it together pretty well and kept the enemy at bay. Second round the enemy took our apartments and square very fast, and then they took the western square. We had to fall back to the tower, but beacuse its so easy to defend we held on for the remaining time.
I think the best way to attack the Tower is to have the sniper and MGer focus on the tower roof. MGer suppresses while the sniper actually kills the guys up there. Once the tower roof is secure, those 2 need to keep it secure. After that, everyone else needs to move in (preferably from both sides) and then have the SMG guys storm the base of the tower with the rifleman in support behind them.

Some of the German ones are extremely vulgar, but I have no idea what the Russian insults are.

Re: AAR March 17th
I love the tanks but I wish the driver had binoculars or something. In the more urban maps, there is something to do since you want to keep moving but in the wide-open tank maps there is zero reason to have a driver and a gunner since it's all stationary tank sniping. If the driver could spot targets for the gunner it'd be better =/.
Do all tank crew roles have binoculars or only the Squad Leader? If so then I guess I can just exit the tank and spot for him.

Re: AAR March 17th
Only the "commanders" have binoculars, and they can spot artillery. Which means on maps like Koenigsplatz, the tank commander and field commander for the Allies can both spot for the artillery.

Re: AAR March 17th
to add on to what cor said, you dont need to get out of the tank to spot, just peer out with binoculars and it should work (at least in the gunner seat)

Re: AAR March 17th
Had good fun last night, which was my first night playing RO on a server with more than 3 or 4 people (well, first night playing RO, really, previously I had just set video and controls and stuff).
This game also shines when the TGers get into action, and my favorite moments were on Koenigsplatz when I nursed a badly damaged tank into a firing position to the left flank of our infantry push. Staring through the smoke and grit across the broken platz watching allied and axis soldiers scuttling (best word I can use to describe the animation) from cover to cover, as explosions and tracer fire dotted the battlefield, was really immersive. The slow, tense pace of the battle, perfectly captures, I think, the way that war on the eastern front was, with wave after wave of infantry hurling themselves at each other. There is a sense of desparation to the combat. This is good, and suspends disbelief a lot more effectivly than most WWII shooters.
I have to say, I like the urban maps with no tanks a little less, not because I like pwnmobiles, but because the tank combat is really well implemented in this game. Watching shells deflect off a Panther in dismay is a unique and refreshing experience in an FPS.
Look forward to more fun with this game. I think that once all the maps are learned, and a good comms practice is established, the intensity of the battles can only go up.
Do or do not, there is no try....

Re: AAR March 17th
Despite spending most of the day in bed with some serious aches I decided I should man up and get a little RO in. Good games on Konigplatz, Bodeverdo (sp?), Odessa and Stalingradkessel. One Konigplatz I worked with the panzerfaust and have to say it takes some getting used, especially trying to judge the distance. A couple of times I used two shots trying to figure out the correct range and finally decided to chance getting a bit closer and hit with the last round. The highlight of the night was on Stalingradkessel with the MG and Santa in possession of the other. Having two guns set in the warehouse really causes problems for the Allies.

Re: AAR March 17th
I meant as the driver. Granted I've only played like 4 maps but the tank-heavy maps I've played don't really require both a driver and a gunner. You just drive up to a good position and sit there sniping other tanks and the driver has nothing to do and cannot spot things for the gunner since he has no zoom or binoculars.

A tank with a gunner and a driver should always be able to do better that a one-man tank.

Ya, I have a blast driving the tanks around while someone else guns. Santa and I have had some good runs together, I find that taking it slow beats driving like a bat out of hell most of the time.
