Questions and Answers About Red Orchestra!

AKA "I didn't read the manual well enough."

Red Orchestra is fun. But it also messes with my puny little head. I could post my silly little questions and get them answered, or I could crawl through the manual again, but I'm sure everyone else has a question or 2 that they probably COULD figure out but don't feel like it. So here's our giant knowledge-base. If you see a question you can answer, go ahead. If you have something you want to ask, go ahead. Para espanol, bailas para dos horas y duermes.

I'll start us off.

1. When do you want to swap the barrel out of your machinegun? Never? After you reload?

2. The range marks on the tank guns. I know you adjust them with the lean left/lean right buttons, but what exactly do they do?

3. How many teamkills does it take to get yourself booted? I think it's like 3 but however many it is I usually manage to reach it

Say a tank is 800m away. You have your sights set at 0m on the tank. When you aim right at him your shell will land in front of him and you would have to compensate over him with the sights to get a hit.

If the tank is 800m away and you set your sight to 800m you can aim right at him and you will hit now. It compensates for the distance so you don't have to aim high.

Get on a map some time and face a building that is far away and test it out. You will see the difference immediately.

Re: Questions and Answers About Red Orchestra!

I'll take a shot, pun intended, at #2 and people can correct my aim, pun intended again, as needed.

Basically you are adjusting for gravity. Once a shell is fired it will fall toward the earth as it travels. By estimating the range you compensate for that. So if you think an enemy tank is 600m away then adjust the range with the keys to 600m, put the crosshairs on the tank, and fire. Watch the result. If you see the shell kick up dirt then the target was probably further than you thought because it hit the ground before the target. Either adjust the range again or aim the gun slightly higher and fire again. If you don't see any dirt or a target hit you may have overestimated the range and caused the shell to fly over the target in which case you adjust downward a bit.

You can ignore the range adjustment completely and just move the gun higher or lower to fire but your shooting should be more accurate on the first shot if you learn to estimate the distance and then adjust the sight accordingly. Afterall, you may not get a second shot!

Hope that helps.

Edit - See Section 3.3 in the RO History and Tactics Guide for help in how to use the commander binocs to estimate range.

1. Your MG barrel will start to smoke if you fire it for long periods of time. You will see the barrel smoking. I've never seen the effects of continuing firing once the barrel started to smoke. I just changed it once I saw the smoke.

Re: Questions and Answers About Red Orchestra!

Can the SMG be accurate at all at medium-long ranges, if supported (leaning on something)? Or should I not bother until I get close in?

I had no idea tanks had range markers :P Good question and answer! But to follow that up, how do I tell the range?

Is there a way to tell which chat channel I'm in? I guess I can hit my chat button and it'll light up ... but I'd like a non-interactive one.

I'm sure I'll have others....

I would say take a few shots if you are supported but move quickly if you miss because if they have a rifle you will be dead if you stick around.

Guess, they didn't have range finders back then. Practice Practice Practice

If you hit the VOIP channels keys it will say in the lower left if you are in the channel already or which one you moved to so you could find out that way too.

The SMG is resonably accurate at longer ranges. The ballistic immitate realism as much as possible so anything up to medium range is an acceptable distance for engaging with and SMG

This is another thing that the game developers tried to make as realistic as possible. Most tank crew did not have any tools to help them judge distances so we don't get any help either! I am not an expert gunner but I usually don't adjust the range mark. Instead I will just aim slightly higher.

EDIT: Whoa, Turbo is fast.

Re: Questions and Answers About Red Orchestra!

Regarding the question of needing to change a machinegun barrel -- if you keep firing a machinegun without pausing, the barrel will overheat. First you'll see it start to smoke, as was mentioned above. If you keep firing even though the barrel is smoking, you'll soon come to a point where your machinegun won't shoot anymore. It's at this point that you'll need to change the barrel.

As far as I know, this is only possible with German machineguns. If you shoot out the barrel of the Soviet machinegun, I think you're hosed.

Re: Questions and Answers About Red Orchestra!

Is there a "favorites" option in the multiplayer menu? If so I can't find it.

Is there a way to join an IP directly instead of scrolling through all of the servers? Once again if there is I can't locate it.

You can right-click on the server list, one choice is to manually type the IP. Don't forget the : port number after the IP address, seems at first sight that it is needed.

Re: Questions and Answers About Red Orchestra!

You can add a server to your favorites by right clicking and hitting "add to favorites."

Re: Questions and Answers About Red Orchestra!

Can anyone recommend a way to add server to favorites? I tried pasting the IP in "Add Favorite" but that showed up "Unknown Server". I tried adding :7777 as well, didn't work. So I end up typing open IP in the console .

Re: Questions and Answers About Red Orchestra!

Downtown, go to the server list. Sort by Server name. Scroll down to the TG servers. Right click. Add to favorites.
