THIS is why I wish this game was played here

I've been having fun with this game since it's release, but it's about to drive me up the wall lately. Why? The players. Often times it's *impossible* to get the offensive team to *attack*. Everyone is camped nice and snug in their prone position right out of spawn to snipe the enemy. But...we're on OFFENSE. To win you have to capture points.

I have found one sure-fire way to get the troops to move up, though. Use this rally cry: "Arty coming in at point X-Y - hold short or go NORTH of this position to avoid it". My troops seem to want to see what all the pretty fireworks are about, and rush at breakneck speed to get a closer look - and get blown up. I get kicked for TK's when I TOLD them where it was, it shows up on the map - and it's pretty easy to SEE where it is before you run into it.

Sure, sometimes it's not located ideally for when the situation changes - what was cutting off the enemy reinforcements when we were attacking our current objective is now stopping us from getting to the next one. You can't call it off, and it takes time to sight another spot, call it in, and for the battery to move their fire - or you have to wait for the current barrage to end. It does no good to rush into it, whether I'm an "idiot" for putting it there or not.

Had a game on Konigsplatz earlier tonight on one of the pubs that usually has good games. Round one the USSR was short of winning by about 3 seconds - because nobody would move onto the objectives. Almost won it when the Germans were low on reinforcements and some of the guys made a push on the final objective, but not enough.

Round 2 the CO left or got kicked due to people running into his arty - so I jumped in. We won, despite the guys rushing headlong into my arty everytime I called it in. Then when I stopped using it for fear of killing more of them - they kept wanting me to call in arty. Of course, they weren't advancing at this time either - UGH. We got the first several objectives quickly, and I was dropping arty on the next one, but they decide NOW for whatever reason they wanted to be agressive. We had plenty of time for a change, and we could've whittled the defense down with the arty for awhile while we regrouped. Nope, gotta rush headlong into it.

Round 3 - couldn't get anyone to advance and it took forever to win the first objective. It looked hopeless as there wasn't much time, but we got ahead on reinforcements and they were almost out, so I tried dropping arty right on their position to try to deplete their reinforcements totally - which would give us the win that way. Or, if they were shorthanded, we might be able to blitz and get the last 2 objectives in the few minutes left. What do my guys do after I tell them HOLD SHORT - I'm trying to kill off the ones camped in the Siegesaule? Of course, they rush in and deplete our reinforcements as well. We lose.

I even had one guy TK me saying he was "protecting his comrades from another of my arty strikes". Great fun, that. Forgive me for trying to help the team win.

    Great game, but the players....

Yeah, the game's really hit-or-miss when it comes to teamwork, and people knowing what weapons need to be positioned where is such a crucial part of the game. If you find a group that are familiar with the ins-and-outs it can be really fantastic.

Late Sunday night I was also playing Koenigsplatz and had one of the best experiences I've had on that map. I spawned Tank Crewman and hopped in the T34 as someone else jumped in the turret. The IS2 was manned and I heard the driver say "lead the way, T34, you have the mounted MG to clear infantry..." and I knew I was with guys that knew the ropes.

I'd park the tank at an angle and switch to the MG seat. The IS2 parked behind us and we could hit the German tanks simultaneously if they attempted to challenge us. Our commander was spot-on with the artillery and the Soviet infantry moved up in front of the tanks. We actually ran out of ammunition and had to return to the tank spawn to rearm, which was a first for me on that map.

On the flipside, you can tell people aren't used to people manning the tanks MG since they're always running around in the open and make for easy pickings. You almost feel guilty mowing down four guys running in single file towards your tank...

But you're right, NCMan, the very next round you could be an SMG'er and one of your teammates discovers his bayonnet and procedes to stab everyone around him, friend or foe, in the back. Ah well...

I think some of the new maps are outstanding and the introduction of smoke has really changed the way the game is played. I'm glad to see Tripwire continuously working on this game. Hopefully they'll introduce the ability to scale knee-high objects soon...

Have you seen there's going to be a mod that takes place in North Africa and Italy? Should be good stuff...
