    Death Messages

I was playing on the |7.DR| 7th Desert Rats — 66.55.155.36:7757 server tonight (part of http://tacticalrealism.com), since there was no one on our TG servers. This server seems to incorporate a 'no death messages' mod/mutator/something, which I actually found pretty cool. Basically, kills don't get confirmed (and not in console, either), unless they're TKs. The map was Basovka (wheat fields + trenches). All in all, I found the experience more intense. It was pretty nerve-wracking to engage in firefights through the wheat fields, without knowing for sure the enemy's status. Crawling through the fields, taking shots, hesitating, etc.

It also made visual confirmations of deaths that much more satisfying. Sure, you can throw grenades randomly and take out some enemies, but that's just luck; you're getting confirmatory info that you shouldn't see (if they were behind a wall, for example). Not being sure whether it was safe or not unless you actually saw the enemy die was pretty intense. I was engaging in a firefight with some enemy crouching behind a crate. Poof poof, then I crouch to safety. I lean back again and take a look. He isn't there anymore. Did I kill him? Is he just hiding behind the crate?

In another instance. A teammate was communicating 'enemy rifle north of the bunker,' then threw a grenade in that direction. 'I think my grenade killed him,' he adds. 'Roger that,' the rest of the team replies. I was near the enemy's location, so I slowly crawled forward. Needless to say, the enemy was NOT dead, and simply hiding. One bayonet later, I confirmed the kill to the team. Furthermore, it felt much more satisfying to get the visual confirmation of the kill then to have it pop up as a message (which can dilute the satisfaction).

In terms of possibilities, this makes communication even more crucial, and could potentially be a pretty cool addition once we incorporate 'squads'. Inter-member communication would be even more important/essential in terms of keeping the squad's situational awareness up to date. 'Enemy sniper to the northwest!' 'Enemy sniper is DOWN. Confirmed visual.' vs simply seeing the sniper name appear on the list of the dead, or an unconfirmed death. 'Enemy sniper is DOWN', when he actually really isn't. Presumed vs confirmed. Could be fun.

I would easily support this feature if the servers adopt it. I think it'd add to the realism, and more importantly, to the tactical gameplay/teamplay (and it'd promote more real-life tactics/situations, too).

    Re: Death Messages

This was tried one night on our America's Army server and I really didn't have a good time for a multitude of reasons. I really don't think I would have fun playing RO like that, and, if it were a full time setting, I'd probably be done with the game. Hoping I aim at the right pixel to get a kill is hard enough for me, not being able to tell if I hit the right pixel would be even worse, I'm afraid

Yeah i like AA like that but because the graphics are better and the maps are smaller, some. RO is just to big of a game and alot of the maps are dark and such. Maybe we could try this on a DIFFERENT server then the main public server/s. Along with 1 life per round and the 16 player maps could make for some interesting rounds
that sounds like a good idea trooper.

Hmm, come to think of it, this could potentially be pretty nice on the '1 life per round' servers, since players there would aim for 'total realism/immersion' in the first place. Not only would you not have to take dying for granted, the same would apply to killing as well.

they have it on the CoD server and i think it works pretty well personnaly, id like to see this added to the main server if not to just see how well it plays.

Yeah I think that would be the best idea.

I think that BF2 and RO are very different cookies. I would like to see this on the main server, at least (as Xink said) to test.

Maybe we need to shape the 2 servers differently, one with a few mods / settings that push the realism side of things, and a second that is closer to the stock default settings. (Not to be onfused with a 1 life server which would be something else entirely).

After all playing dead was a realistic tactic.

    Re: Death Messages

I would normally agree with no death messages if bodies remained on the map longer as it is obviously more realistic. However since bodies don't stay on the map very long it would be hard to confirm the kill on a long shot.

You could just hit 'F1' and see if your score increased by one point.

Clever! So we need to not allow F1 until the battle is over... <ducking for cover from the inevitable incoming rounds from that suggestion>

Or much better: remove the scoreboard and leave the player list. <goes prone next to Ironsight>

I'm all for removing the scoreboard but keeping the player list. Self gratification shouldn't come from your score but if you win or lose.

    Re: Death Messages

I'm all for removing the death messages (tried it in Day of Defeat once and it was much more fun) but with so many Tactical Gamers whining about Red Orchestra because it's not like BF2 (I want to increase the player name view range! I want squads set up ingame! I want voice chat to be different! I want friendlies to show up on the map!) I think changing the game to make it more realistic is just going to frustrate people. I know that every time I take a shot at someone my eyes go to the corner to see if I killed them, and the game would be much more tense and realisic if I had to sit there motionless, wondering if I need to fire another shot, but with the attitude I've seen on the forums so far I don't think it would work out.

And yeah removing the score would go along well with that. Not like it really matters; I haven't even quite figured out how the game keeps score, and I think most people here don't care about their score either.

    Re: Death Messages

Yeah tycho i completely agree with what you are saying but those people need to relise that RO and BF2 are NOTHING like each other. After reading through posts im getting tired of reading the 2 games being compared. BF2 is an arcade modern war game, a very good one at that. RO is more sim and less arcady WWII game.

But remember we do have 2 servers going so we could try and set one up like this
that sounds like a good idea trooper.
