Red Orchestra to release on Steam
I never played RO but I wanted to try it out. Supposed to be a WW2 mod for the UT2004 engine that was steeped in realism? Does anybody have any insight if it was good?

If anyone else has tried this post your thoughts as well.

I did think it sucked. I was even going to write a negative review for it, but couldn't sustain the level of vitriol required to do so.

Just wanted to put a little awareness out for it

Re: Red Orchestra to release on Steam
I've read an interview with one of the game developers.

Re: Red Orchestra to release on Steam
I went through the interview you posted. Sounds really good. Thought I would post an excerpt from it. This looks to be an awesome feature:
One of the most exciting new features is the ability to rest your rifle or submachine gun on ledge and against walls to steady your aim and reduce recoil.
When we first came up with the idea we thought it would be fun but didn’t really know it would have such a large impact on gameplay. All of the sudden in our playtests we started seeing more and more people using their weapon’s like a real soldier. You see people resting their PPSH41 submachine gun on sandbags laying down cover fire, snipers hiding inside buildings resting their rifles on desks, tables, or anything lying around, or rifleman resting their rifle against a wall to get a more steady shot. We think it’s a feature you’ll likely see copied in other tactical shooters in the future much like 3d ironsights were when our team introduced them.

Re: Red Orchestra to release on Steam
Quick question to you Mateo, was the gameplay surrounding control points like BF2 or was it something else?

Re: Red Orchestra to release on Steam
I hated it, the general idea of the game was good but the execution was horrible. The guns didnt work well, i felt like i was waddling like a duck instead of running (gave me headaches) and there didnt seem to be much about it that was anything truly amazing.
I just played a different mod for UT2k4 called Frag Ops. It was kinda like a remake of CS, just made a lot better.

I agree with Santa.. The concept was neat, but the game itself just left a LOT to be desired.

Re: Red Orchestra to release on Steam
It was more objective based, like DoD.

Re: Red Orchestra to release on Steam
Personally I loved RO and am eagerly looking forward to the comercial release (though I'm a bit leary of Steam not having used it).
I consider it one of the most realistic shooters ever and though the mod had its limitations (a lot of UT2K4 engine stuff they couldn't fix/change before they got the code as well as the bugs that plauge every project) they did amazing things. Realistic weapon ballistics, player inertia (added in 3.3 I think), realistic grenades with concussion effects (vision blur etc.), no bloody crosshairs at all (a pet peeve of mine), and on and on.
From what I've read so far they're adressing many of the things I found shortcomings in the mod like the lack of lean (critical in a game where keeping to cover is even more critical than AA) and the ability to dive to prone etc.
Damn, I sound like an RO fanboy.

Re: Red Orchestra to release on Steam
I was a bit leary of Steam as well since all I ever read on forum boards was negative. When I finally downloaded it to get HL2 I must say I don't mind it at all. In fact it's handy for patches that are released every so often and I haven't experienced any problems with it to date. I've played several games other than HL2 with it as well. CS:S and DoD:S to name a few. All with relative ease.
