Re: talking?
I dont think TS is the answer to our talking problems personally. Eventually TS will cause as many problems in-game as it solves once we open the server to pubbies. Also not everyone from TG can/does utilize TS while playing in game.
The best way is to figure out how to maximize (if possible) the VOIP for everyone.Long Live the 2nd BCT and 1st MIP

Re: talking?
Well, it sounds like the VOIP in-game is perfectly usable, so it will be used.
I was just curious as to why, in this day and age, we're even presented with options which drive us to see that decision (in-game or TS) as needing to be made at all.
Maybe the higher-quality voice compromises your ability to hear the game? That is, maybe the higher detail in the voice hinders your ability to hear detail in the game? Just a thought.Steam Community? Add me. | Join #tacticalgamer | Search Results Legend | New Posts Forum Filter | Postbox Toggle | Live Thread Review | One Line Results | Free Remote, Encrypted Backup
Darkilla: In short, NS is pretty much really fast chess. With guns. Apophis: I haven't seen anyone say that SM's are better than non-SMs. Nordbomber: This is THE first server I've seen where either side can comeback from out of seemingly nowhere with the right teamwork. en4rcment: I have NEVER experienced the type of gameplay that I have found here. Re: talking?
I agree in-game is there and should be utilized. My settings last night were on EAX, now that I've read the forums I will change back as suggested and would expect to be able to hear more on voice.
Also, as to the OP, the reason you might not "hear" could be 3 things:
1. People on TS aren't using in-game voip
2. People using the local in-game channel and your not near enought to hear them
3. People have only spent 1 night in the game and don't know enough to even begin talking.
For example, when I spot a contact, in BF2 I would comma rose spot them and voip to my squad their location. In RO there is no comma rose and I don't have a CLUE about were I am on the maps so I can't exactly say anything in VOIP.
It will come with time and text is definately not going to work. I'm not taking my eyes off the battle to read text or my hands off the mouse to type a response.|TG-12th| SHINER

Re: talking?
I mean, the great solution somebody came up with five years ago isn't available to those designing games today -- they're forced to reinvent the wheel.

Re: talking?
I can't imagine that's it. It's the same technology from the past. You're just using better codecs, which can be licensed (is that accurate?). Surely it's not a cost issue.

Re: talking?
Right. SPEEX is what I had in mind, but I don't exactly "keep up" with the voice codec scene, so there could be something cooler floating around by now. Speex has been around for years.
Natural Selection uses it. Teamspeak uses it. Does RO use it? Dunno.
I just know that title after title doesn't meet the voicecomm quality expectations that the Internet of the past FIVE YEARS have proven all-too-reasonable.
So, I'm saying, something about those expectations must be made unreasonable given some details of these recent titles. I meantioned the playercount/server/network/load theory. Another theory is licensing costs.
I'm just curious to know what it actually is.Steam Community? Add me. | Join #tacticalgamer | Search Results Legend | New Posts Forum Filter | Postbox Toggle | Live Thread Review | One Line Results | Free Remote, Encrypted Backup

Re: talking?
I don't want to strain to hear my team in the name of realism, and properly-managed modern codecs have been known to reduce, not always increase, server and client bandwidth requirements.

Re: talking?
This really is rather unacceptable. Everyone has these fancy sound cards that cost a load of cash, and they have to use an inferior software audio renderer that bypasses those sound cards and probably makes performance worse.
