Re: First Impressions
EXACTLY!! I'm really looking forward to some scrims with RO. I think a lot of pre-planning will go a long way with this game. People will get better with coming up with a plan and executing it on-the-fly, but I thought I was the only one already anticipating a scrim/match...glad to see I'm not!!

Re: First Impressions
I agree. RO lends itself greatly to pre-planning and scrims. The ingame tools are just weak.

This happened to me. Open up Steam, go to File, and hit "Change User...". This will log you out. Then log back in. My game works fine now.

Re: First Impressions
Whats HDR bloom and AF? Cause right now RO is a muddled mess at any decent distance which makes it annoying to play.

Re: First Impressions
I think, overall, the difference is that you now need to work for your situational awareness. Heck some BF2 players get irked when you call out comms by voice, as it duplicates the comm rose method of spotting. It's very easy to forget how unrealistic this is, and if we want RO to be a realism game then we need to accept these limitations and learn to cope with them. A lot of this is not the fault of the engine for not being easier, but the fault of us for not having adapted yet. But it will come.
I also.. i dunno - maybe this is harsh, but I really don't like the gameyness of saying that you cannot command until you know the map. I think the really good leaders are the ones that don't need to know the map (although I admit that there is a real balance problem between those that know the map and those that do not). If it were up to me every map would be randomly generated so that you never got quite the same battlefield twice. That means you have to act and think on your feet - but other things would have to change also for this to work.
Anyway, mayby this should be a second impression, but I found a dislike today on a public server. I wish I had hit the screenshot button in time. The kill stats came up in the top right and read
Ally (satchel charge logo) Axis 1
Ally (satchel charge logo) Axis 2
Ally (satchel charge logo) Axis 3
(satchel charge logo) Ally
-- yes 'c4' suicide attacks have made it onto RO already! gah!

Re: First Impressions
Hehe, notice that one of my likes was the satchel charge? I killed two tanks with it on Tuesday night, only managing to take out one teammate because he didn't know I was talking to him when I said, "Back away from that corner!" I didn't see either one go off, so I don't know exactly how close it was to the tank.. I just kinda tossed it around a corner and ran for cover and saw that the tank blew up a few seconds later. I wouldn't chalk it up to suicide tactics just yet.. people just aren't sure of the blast radius and how to properly use the things.

Re: First Impressions
This would be my holy grail of tactical gaming. No more rushing to known chokepoints, no more obvious shortcuts, no more over-enthusiastic grenade lobbing into well-known hidey spots ... wow.

Re: First Impressions
Sometimes games need to put non-realistic mechanisms in place to counter the inability to reproduce real life things. To counter your comm rose example... if I were able to provide hand signals and point in the direction of a bogey, I'd be able to stay off of voice comms and keep that communication channel clear and quiet. I view the comm rose (some portions at least) as the game's way or doing this. I can't point or give hand signals, but through the comm rose I can give certain pieces of information.
