    Re: First Impressions

oh asch i absolutely agree, but in BF2's case the spot is relayed to everyone in the map. That's some impressive gesturing Another thing I like about RO is that when prone it is very forgiving about what you can and cannot slide over. I must admit I wasa little surprised to see myself percehd on top of an overturned desk that was lying on it's side (quite a feat of balance in fact), but it worked in the sense that had you got full movement you would have been able to negotiate it.

So yes, certain concessions have to be made to overcome weak points (and I'd love hand signals in RO), but there is a level of going too far. Or maybe it's not going too far, after all BF2 is supposedly around 80-100 years later than WW2!

If they added a commo rose "spotted" thing that would give people NEARBY (within umm 5-10 meters or so) a direction and approximate distance (so that on my HUD an arrow would pop up in the direction of the enemy - the size of the arrow would indicate the distance, and the direction would have a 20% margin of error) ... the game would be PERFECT.

    *hint hint Wilson hint hint*

IMO, this would overcome the limitation of not being able to use gestures in the game, not being able to use your peripheral vision to see your squadmates' gesturing, and not being sure whether the squawk you just heard was Team or Local.

(guys, don't forget about the suggestions thread - lets make sure we put all these ideas in one place to make it easy for tripwire to find them)

Oh, yes! Random maps would indeed kick ass...

I also thought the idea behind Kuma War was cool: every week a new map/scenario would come out based on real life current events. Not a PC idea, but a very interesting one...

I think a "spotted" thing would really not fit in at all. Seriously, you want it to point in a direction and give you a distance? Then say over voice comm "west, 200 meters." You don't need to automate something that can easily be done by voice, as it was in real life.

Also, asch, the movement is "choppy" because it's realistic. Go outside, run straight forward, then try to switch directions. Do you move like you do in Battlefield 2, or do you move like you do in Red Orchestra? Exactly. And what are these 2d trees you're talking about? Which maps have them?

The "spotted" replaces some non-verbal communication that might normally take place. I would also add that certain things being automated can also compensate for the poor voice quality of the game.

Choppy = realistic? Real life movement is not actually portrayed by either game perfectly... so your "exactly" comment sounds more ignorant and arrogant than matter-of-fact.

Apparently my use of the word "choppy" didn't portray itself very well. I'm not referring to changing direction and momentum. If I'm moving in a straight line, the movement feels choppy. In most people, the brain actually compensates for this and gives people the impression of smooth movement even though you may be bouncing when walking or running. So I'll still stand by my comment about being choppy.

I don't remember the map I was playing when I tried to talk into a patch of trees. I was disappointed when I got there, I seemed to just walk right through them and that's when I realized they were 2D.

First, the signaller have to know it was 200 meters. In real life, I maybe would. In game, probably not.

Second, while he's saying this, 2 other people are. And someone on Team. Again, IRL this would not be an issue since a) radio vs. normal speech + pointing would be pretty distinct, b) voices don't cancel each other out IRL.

Third, being able to say West would mean that all squaddies know at all times where West actually IS. And please don't say "Then learn it"; you'll always get people of variable awareness / skill / playtime dedicated to the game.

I'm not looking for shortcuts or EZ Cheetz; I'm looking to get around the things we don't get by having a limited on-screen FOV, limited resolution, limited experience.

I don't know the name, but it's prolly the tank map with North and South Fields and North and South Villages. There's a small 'forest' next to the villages that has the trees in question. I got uber-lost in them one night and they warped/lagged me like crazy.

Those trees are 2D because if they were 3D we'd all be running less than 15 FPS on that map.

    Re: First Impressions

I've always thought that the greatest hurdle to FPSs was the inability to move your head independent of your body; the second, the inability to point. I hope head-tracking eventually overcomes the first, and a simple "point" key that allows nearby players to see a laser pointer-like beam indicating where you are looking will overcome the second.

    Re: First Impressions

I don't see why you'd need to move your head independently. When have you ever turned your body and wished you could turn your head instead? I mean, in real life it's useful but in a game where turning is instant and you can't trip over your own feet, it makes no difference.

And like Tzef said, those trees HAVE to be 2d. It's an entire freaking forest, man. Most of the trees are fully 3d, and look great.

Ask any deployed MG'er, sniper, or even sharpshooting rifleman, while prone.

On foot it's not a big deal, no.
