Re: Second Impressions
Yeah, I've been able to hear team when on local, weird.
This is why we need to apply the concept of 'squads', which is simply not being done at this point. Teams split up. Individual squads switch to local, so as not to disrupt the rest of the team. The squad 'leader' is the one who would communicate SITREPS to the rest of the team via teamchat. This chain of command would add a whole lot to teamwork. If the 'leader' goes down, the '2nd in command' becomes the new 'squad leader', and so on.

Oh man that feature was really cool last night. I was gaurding a sandbag that overlooked a hill. I heard drunkensoul on the other team say "Throw grenades over this hill" and sure enough a second later about 3 grenades were right in front of me.

Perhaps it is inteded to work that way by the designers? You are getting sound clues you might get in real life that you wouldn't otherwise get in the game. Seems unlikely something so obvious wouldn't have been corrected during testing otherwise.

Re: Second Impressions
I can hear Team when on the local channel. I don't think I ever heard the local enemy channel.
How about as part of the RO Coms SOP we say you have to use the local channel unless you want to communicate with the CO. The CO uses Team for all coms to squads and local if he is near a squad he wants to talk with. Designated squad leaders can be set prior to a round and players assigned to those leaders.
This then brings up the question of weapon dispersion amongst squads. Jumping in and grabing all the SMG, MGs, and such willy nilly will have to stop if we really want to get organized.
The tools as in BF2 for squads may not be built in to RO, but we should have enough discipline to plan ahead and make it happen when we are ready."Artillery lends dignity to what would otherwise be an ugly brawl."

Re: Second Impressions
I think we need to be able to wait 1-2 minutes before rushing off and allow the commander or who ever is going to take charge a bit of time to organize the team and setup who is going where.
I am enjoying this game. I even picked up the Commander role a couple of times, something I have yet to do in BF2. Though there isn't as much to do, especially when you dont have artillery to call in. Squadleaders are going to have to get used to providing quality SITREPs for commanders as they don't have the same view as commanders in BF2.

Re: Second Impressions
It's not about what you can do in terms of in-game mechanics, the commander should be organizing the battle for his troops.

Re: Second Impressions
Did you throw them back? A REAL soldier would have tossed them all back and gotten 3 kills.

Being an infantryman on that same tank map was not fun at all. I found myself running through a vast field populated only with 2 dimensional hedges here and there, wondering how far I would have to go before finding an enemy tank to end my misery. (I used a grenade eventually)
I also played on a couple of infantry maps, but I found that they finished too fast and I had no idea how well my team had been doing.
Likes:
- should have mentioned last time that the sound is really nice - I love the blast of (friendly) MG fire next to me - I only wish it echoed in the streets, but that may be a sound card limitation
- tanks are really cool to operate
- blood
Dislikes:
- team channel voip is not teamwork, and it isn't realistic, the game needs radio men and local voip
- if my soldier can't get past a thigh-high pile of sandbags then how did he ever get through the medical evaluation?Peace through fear... since 1947!

Re: Second Impressions
That's what Im saying. If people start moving before the commander has time to figure out what who is what class and what needs to happen, its going to turn into a big mess. If everyone took 1-2 minutes and listened to what the commander had in mind, it would make the teamwork part a bit easier.

Re: Second Impressions
Once everyone goes through past the learning curve of getting to know the game, I'd expect that'd be pretty much a requirement, whether in an infantry map or a tank map (just because you're working with your crew doesn't mean the tank commander shouldn't be coordinating the whole battle).
In fact, I'd say this important chain of command could even be considered essentially in terms of bringing RO a level above.

Re: Second Impressions
I agree Marconi, some designation that the following message is meant for the Team would help. Either 'Team" as he suggested or just 'Report" or perhaps as in the millitary 'Message Follows...'

2nd impressions...
Very annoyed that the jump key doesn't double as a stand key when you're prone.
And I can't look at the splash screen logo....

Re: Second Impressions
No disrespect to the beta testers was intended by my comment. I have been a beta tester for quite a few games over the years so I know what it feels like to hear the "how could the testers have missed that one" crap. Sorry if anyone thought I was bashing the test team. Far from it as the game is very stable and bug free from my perspective.

Re: Second Impressions
No, no... I was actually biting my tongue because there's a major bug that was revealed during beta testing that they decided wasn't a showstopper. I happen to be affected by that bug, which causes BSOD on game launch, and I'm sure everyone's sick of hearing me whine about it!
