Second Impressions
Maybe it's just me, but tonight seemed like a whole different ballgame compared to last night!
Nice job, everyone. The teamwork was there -- it's still rough, but it's a great start.
For the folks who stepped up tonight and provided direction, this is exactly what Red Orchestra needs. The difference is night and day. Thank you!

Re: Second Impressions
I'm still crawling, but picking things up. I was actually able to help the team today and take out some things with explosives. Even got a kill shot on Santa with the russian tank-sniper

Re: Second Impressions
Yeah, I felt lost tonight since we were playing the "new" (to beta testers) maps, and I was slow on the draw while loading and ended up being rifleman. I didn't bring much to the table trying to pixel hunt with that thing, but right before I left for work I turned up AA and AF in my video card settings and turned on single player real quick and I think that will make a world of difference in the future. Anyway, I heard a ton of chatter over VoIP, and much of it was useful information concerning troop movements combined with map coordinates.
Two highlights: on Odessa, me and Diceman noticed some Allies rush the Tower even though it was currently uncapturable. I don't know if they were ignorant (couldn't cap) or geniuses (confident the other CP would be taken, and as soon as it fell they would cap the Tower), but Diceman cleared them out while I distracted them by firing close to their heads...my aim sucks!!
My last map was Arad and the Allies really steamrolled us, and I'm not sure how much was individual ambition or group coordination. If we tried to move armor into the North Field, they had tanks to intercept us, with additional armor in the North Village to hit our exposed sides. Infantry moved into the South Village and I'm not sure how the South Field was capped but it was. I really felt outmaneuvered on this map so kudos to all the Allies that round (around 2130 EST I believe).|TG-1stMIP|Coridon

Re: Second Impressions
Today was great. There were a few rounds where there was a lack of teamwork, but there were some where there was a lot of teamwork. 3 really stood out to me.
First was the stalingrad map. Strag, turbo, and others led us and we did the best that ive seen the russian team be able to do so far. With their help and leadership i learned how the map actually worked and had a lot of fun.
Second was in the map with the garage, construction house, and it was very dark. Me, drunk, xeil and others were able to win the map twice and i almost always had 1, if not 2, people following me. Even without talking, generally if a rifleman saw an SMGer behind him, he would let the SMGer take point inside the hallways. People are starting to understand their classes a lot better.
Last was in kaukasus, where the alamo like courtyard is in the center. Our team was on defense and our basic plan was to keep the outer bases as long as possible, and then fall back to the courtyard. Worked like a charm, we held all bases until about 2 minutes left and then we fell back and defended. Highlight of that round was near the mortar position. Xeil was up high with a MG. I told him to keep firing at the mortar position because 2 guys were there capping it. He kept up the fire, and i moved onto the enemys flank. I popped up and took out both of them with my SMG because Xeil kept them suppressed. It was so cool seeing both of them just hiding behind a wall and see green tracers bounce off the other side.
All in all, i think youll see more teamwork in the maps more people know, and much less teamwork in the maps you dont know. Where would you know where to go and tell other people to go if you dont know the map?

Re: Second Impressions
Oh yeah, definite improvement. Such application of teamwork just needs to be a bit more consistent.
Kaukasus is now my new favorite map. Defending that courtyard is just plain awesome.

Re: Second Impressions
There were some moments last night that were nice teamwork-wise, but overall I was a bit disappointed. To many people still not trying to group up in any fashion, just spawning and taking off in some direction. To many not listening to local and using team for every communication which is just confusing as hell.
To many times last night I would attach myself to a group, follow them around, cover their backsides, turn back around and discover they disappeared somewhere without any chatter in local what-so-ever to let me know where they were going or what they were doing. To many are still not using local for squad type chatter.
I know this will get better, but I actually got pissed last night and logged out of the game for a bit because of it.
[edit] I guess local may be broke a bit for some people so there may be a reason people don't respond to local [/edit]Last edited by jaymind; 03-16-2006 at 02:54 PM.

Did you try my "Change User..." fix?

Re: Second Impressions
Very same experience here. Everybody's in the Team channel, and if you're not, you are missing out on what's going on. You end up isolated. So you give in, you join the Team channel, and it's a mess.

Re: Second Impressions
I think the voip could have been done much better with dual channels for team and local allowing you to hear both at the same time, but having a seperate button to speak on one or the other. I know everytime I switch out of team I feel very disconnected from the rest of the play. If i'm in local how do I know if someone is trying to organize a defensive position or an assualt?
Hopefully this is one of the many diffeciencies in teamwork tools that the dev's will address in future patches.|TG-12th| SHINER

Re: Second Impressions
Wait, if you are on LOCAL you can not hear TEAM? I was thinking the channel selection concerns only yourself speaking and you can hear all channels any time. Can someone pleasy clarify?

Re: Second Impressions
I hope that's not the case! That, combined with the fact that the enemy can understand your local comms, really discourages the use of the local channel.

Re: Second Impressions
I can hear both. This was especially apparent to me last night on Arad (a tank map). I would switch to the Local VOIP channel to work with my tank crew, but I kept hearing the Team VOIP channel updates, (especially from Redleg with the excellent artillery and tanks spots
).
EDIT: You can see my VOIP settings here.

Re: Second Impressions
I can hear the team channel and local channel. I always talk in local unless it is something urgent that everyone needs to know.

Re: Second Impressions
You hear both, but it's hard to tell who's speaking when. There needs to be a better distinction, or maybe etiquette about talking on TEAM - I really don't want to glance down to make sure I'm hearing local vs team.
Maybe local should be plain speak, and team prefaced with the speaker saying TEAM? Just a thought.
