Tanks

There were a few games last night at about 2v2 or 3v3, so we loaded up some tank maps. Alternating between a full crew and each of us taking 1 tank each we learnt some interesting things.

Not every shell will do damage. In particular we found that the T34 cannon performed very poorly against the Tiger. Santa and I scored tons of 'hits' against vodkatonic, but they were ricocheting off with an audible ting. These do no damage.

To make a hit more successful you need to focus on the weaker rear or side armour. Additionally you need a flat surface to have a good chance of penetrating.

You can get a one shot kill if you aim your shot against an angle so that your shell is diverted up into the skirt between the hull and the turret.

Damage is not just an amount, but also by location with an effect. At one point last night my tank damage was yellow but I had also lost my left track, and was immobilised. Needless to say an immobile tank is not long-after dead.

Faster lighter tanks such as the T34 need to use their superior speed to outflank enemy tanks, and engage them at close range. The turret speed is notably faster on these tanks than heavier ones. These tanks benefit from having a driver and a commander really co-ordinate, as you do not want to stop to fire in these.

Roads are your friend. Not only do you travel a lot faster, but the flat terrain gives you a good chance of hitting whilst moving (although you will need to slow down). Cutting across country does not make you much harder to hit unless you can get completely out of LOS, but it does make a moving shot almost impossible.

Do not enter dense terrain (such as a town) without infantry support. The best use of tanks is just outside of the area on overwatch, especially against armoured cars. Use tanks in pairs to support each other's flanks. Anti-tank rockets slay armour in quick order.

Soft cover is your friend! Last night I found some nice spots where my tanks was hidden mostly behind a hill, but with a hedge on the hill. I was able to sit out of the hatch and use the binoculars to find a target, and then swivel the turret to align to the shot. I could not see the shot from inside the turret because of the hedge, but the round passed through fine. Enemy shots back were not accurate, often missing completely.

Re: Tanks

Good points sir, I shall keep them in mind.

Do any gunners ever adjust thier sights or do you all just change your aim to allow shell drop? In the historical and tactical guide it shows you how to calculate the distance you are from another tank by using your binoculars. I would quite like to try this out.

Re: Tanks

The Tiger is *begging* to be outflanked. It's slow to move, and it's turret takes a full minute to do a 360 - I timed this during one of the rounds last night when there were 5-6 people on. A T-34 should be able to close and get a side or even rear shot before the Tiger can turn the turret to get a shot.

I think that using the incremental throttle is *crucial* in the tanks, especially in a situation like this. These things are heavy, so have a lot of inertia to overcome when starting from a dead stop. In a T-34 vs. the Tiger, it'd probably be good to slow to 10-20% for a shot, then accelerate to get to the flanks while reloading. With the BF2-style movement (hold the key down) I think it'd be more difficult to do this.

Another thing to consider here - teamwork. If you have an IS-2 and a T-34, have the IS-2 slug it out at long range with the Tiger, while he T-34 goes for the flank. If you have 2 T-34's, flank him on both sides. With that slow turret, no way he gets both of you.

All of the above should work pretty well when a group of Panzer IV's is taking on an IS-2 - flank him! Of course that one isn't as slow as the Tiger so...good luck lol.

I always adjust and it seems to work.

I started out using the incrental throttle, but have recently changed to the other style and I tend to like it more - the tanks seem a bit more responsive this way to me.

Personal style, but I think people should try out both.
