    Usage of Local VOIP

First of all, I'd like to thank all of TG for giving Red Orchestra such a friendly and positive home here. Secondly, please read all of this as it is important information.

Over the past few days, there have been a number of players who have not used Local Voice Chat and have not responded to admin instructions to do so. Admittedly, ROOST was only released 5 days ago, but by now most players should be sufficiently acclimatised to the basic game mechanics to work this function. To access it, press the "Delete" key to enter the Local Channel, and press the Scroll Lock key to talk.

    Local should be used for:
    - Communication with nearby players
    - Communication with your squad
    - Communication with your tank crew
Team VOIP should be used for:
    - Requesting orders
    - Contact reports
    - Giving SITREPs for your squad
Typed Chat should be used for:
    - Communications such as "Nice shot!", "Wow, look at 'em fly!" and so forth.

Common sense and thoughtfulness is required - if your team doesn't need to hear it, don't say it.

    ____________

"Why should I use Local VOIP?"

    1. Not using it creates an irritating and frustrating game environment for your teammates.

If my squad and I are on one side of the map, we don't need to hear instructions being shouted to a tank driver on the other side of the map. Extraneous communications such as these are distracting and confusing. Local VOIP, when used properly, will ensure that the people who need to hear what you are saying will hear it.

    2. Using Local VOIP helps your team

Correct use of Local Voice Chat allows for quick and easy coordination with players near-by. Simply saying something along the lines of "<insert name>, I'm with you/I've got your back" and following said player will help you and your team immensely. On a deeper level, this same principal can be applied as per the SOPs for the creation of squads.

    3. Using Local VOIP adds realism and depth to the game.

Local VOIP adds a realistic atmosphere to the game. Footsoldiers generally did not have radios on the Eastern Front in WWII, and relied on shouted orders to communicate with those close-by. As such, Local VOIP comms can be overheard by the enemy, adding depth and a certain degree of strategy.

    Re: Usage of Local VOIP

In theory there is a way to configure your setup to enter the local channel by default. You can specify it under the Audio tab. Check the box for Auto Select Active Channel and then enter the default channel name. What isn't clear is what name to enter to activate it? Do we enter "Local" or "Local Channel" or what, and does it really work? I just found it and haven't tried it yet.

Edit - Ran a quick test by myself this morning using "Local" as the default channel name. When I hit the mic key it did list Local as the channel over the mic volume box. I switched the defaul to Team in the config and was talking on the Team channel by default when entering the game. One odd thing was that the word (either Local or Team) over the mic volume box was red when I was talking on the Axis channels and Blue when I was talking on the Allied channels. Seems backwards to me as the Allies are always red and the Axis blue on the scoreboard aren't they? Not sure if it's a bug or a feature.

If you like it then it's a feature; if you don't then it's a bug.

Also to note we are going to do some experimenting with different Local VOIP radii, so that we can find a decent balance between being able to spread out and still hear others nearby, and not overlapping to much.

Please keep team voip down to a minimum.

I know I talk alot on VOIP, but thats because I am trying to plan stuff and send guys to different locations. Only say something that will benefit the team and keep it short. (if there is a guy at the tower ruins, say 'enemy north of tower ruins' NOT 'theres an enemy in front of me at tower ruins but I cant shoot him because I am reloading and I hope he doenst see me'.

As Munchkin say, try to keep VOIP open for strategies and pinpointing enemy locations.

What about the Local VOIP bug where you are talking but no one hears you? I keep seeing mention of all the Team VOIP spam but Local VOIP is buggy. It normally works at the beginning of the round then after you die a few times, it stops working.
