Objectives Part II -- Reading the Map

To help clarify how objectives can be read from the map, I'd like to post an example from Krasnyi Oktyabr:

This map is presented from the Soviets' point of view, who must defend the objectives. The conditions shown are those that exist at the beginning of a round. The Germans must capture all four objectives to win the round.

As you can see, there are two red stars that are brightly colored (the Petrol Yard and the Central Yard), and there are two red stars that are dimly colored (the Garage and the Construction Hall). The two brightly colored red stars are the only objectives that can be captured by the Germans at this time. The two dimly colored red stars cannot be captured by the Germans at this time. It is the job of the Soviets to defend the two brightly colored objectives, as the right side of the map explains. (When the Germans hold an objective, it takes on the appearance of a black cross instead of a red star, as shown in the map's legend. German objectives that can be captured are indicated by brightly colored black crosses; those that cannot be captured are indicated by dimly colored black crosses.)

If the Germans capture both of the brightly colored objectives, they will gain access to the two remaining objectives (the Garage and the Construction Hall). These two objectives would then become brightly colored, indicating that they were available for capture. The list of objectives on the right side of the map would also be updated, indicating the new objectives. Note that if an objective is being disputed (in other words, if one side is trying to capture it), its symbol (either the red star or the black cross) will flash slowly on the map.

By checking the map every so often, you can see which objectives your team owns and which objectives the enemy team owns. You can also see on the righthand side of the map the list of the current objectives for your team. Hopefully this will help folks become better situated on the maps of Red Orchestra.

Are the objectives listed in order they must be captured? (i.e. do the 1. and 2. above mean anything)

what about for attacking vs. defending? (I bet this is in TFM, huh?)

well, in the example cited, it's a version of a kind of map where one side holds all the points. They are, as such, the defenders. I believe, they win as long as they hold at least one OBJ at the end of the game. This is how it is in Koenigsplatz as well.

The 1 and 2 OBJS must be capped, before the attacker can be allowed to even be able to get the last 2. IIRC, it does not matter whether 2 is capped first, or 1 is. based upon the starting spawns, in my experience the Central Yard (which is number 1) falls first most of the time anyways.

that's what i figured for defenders... but is this always the case? I vaguely recall that on at least one of the maps, on the "attacking" team, all the objectives are listed in order??? maybe it was Arad?

hmmm, don't think it's Arad, cause thats a "two and two" map, where each side *starts* with 2. Koenigsplatz, is *fairly* linear in that regard, in that the OBJs tend to be centered on the map, are sequential, and are progressive.

(Edit): I went to school near where you live in Mass., small world. ).

Re: Objectives Part II -- Reading the Map

It depends on the map. On Stalingrad Kessel, for example, the Soviets are attacking and start like so:

Once they take the Warehouses, the Soviets have the options of taking the North Rail Yard and the Assembly Hall. Both objectives are capturable; the order in which they're captured doesn't matter. I believe the Soviet objectives list at this point looks something like this:

    1. Hold the Warehouses
    2. Capture the Assembly Hall
    3. Capture the North Rail Yard

Again, the order in which the Soviets capture the Assembly Hall and the North Rail Yard doesn't matter, but BOTH of these objectives must be captured before the South Rail Yard becomes capturable. If the Germans, who are defending, are able to hold at LEAST the South Rail Yard until the end, they win the entire map.

Re: Objectives Part II -- Reading the Map

Here is Arad, as shown at the beginning of a round from the Soviet perspective:

As Heinz said, this is a "two and two" map; both teams start with two objectives. Each team must attack AND defend. To win this map, one team must hold all four objectives. The order in which the objectives are captured does not matter.
