    Where the HECK am I???

So you've played Red Orchestra for a few hours now, and maybe you're still having a hard time figuring out where you are on a given map. Don't worry. This is actually fairly easy to figure out.

If you bring up your map, you'll notice a handy grid system that you can use for easy reference. You should also notice a red arrow somewhere on the map. That red arrow is YOU, and it points in the direction in which you're facing. Keeping in mind that the maps are always oriented so that north is along the top edge, you should have everything you need to get your bearings.

There is also a compass available that you can use for orientation. It's an option that you can enable in the game's Configuration menu. When enabled, the compass will appear in the lower right corner of your screen.

With these tools, you can quickly locate yourself on the map and then call out your position to your team using the grid system.

"Strag in position at Bravo Two."

You can see the direction in which you're pointing, so if someone assigns you a quadrant to cover, you'll know where they're talking about.

"Strag in position at Bravo Two, covering east."

If someone asks you to move to a certain grid coordinate, all you have to do is bring up your map, find the grid coordinate in question, locate yourself on the map, point yourself in the right direction, and then head to your destination.

If someone asks you to do something like "assemble at Charlie Six, then move north along the Six line to Alpha Six," what they want you to do is proceed to the grid sector at Charlie Six, form a group, and then move directly north to the grid sector at Alpha Six.

The key to knowing where you are is checking your map often. Then, if you communicate with your teammates, you can tell them where you are, and vice versa. Pretty soon, everyone will know where they are and where they're going.

One thing of note: I had a hard time using my map to find my position. The arrow that represents you is rather small, and is also colored red... just like many of the other markers on the map.

Yea, that's a problem I had too. I would have to stare at the map for several seconds to find myself, memorize what direction I'm facing, drop the map, turn to my new direction (I had found that compass option -- no clue why it was turned off by default?!) and move out. Go around a few corners, rinse, repeat.

We're all so used to the minimap on bf2. I know its not realistic but man, it sure makes it easier navigating.

If you turn directions while having the map up your arrow will move real time on the map. Not much but it does help.

I dunno, I never have any trouble finding me. It's not like the maps are very cluttered, and your icon is the only one that isn't in the same place every time you open up the map.

This is my biggest stumbling block after 1 hour of play time. I can locate myself most of the time, but I am have a hard time getting my head around not being able to locate my team on the map.

For me this is a part of the skill of the game. Teams really need to work on their SA. But imagine how a team that nailed this would totally crucify their opposition!

I think the maps and general lack of orientation in the game are some of its biggest faults.

Players would really benefit from a mini map that is always up, similar to BF2. I can't tell you how many times I've been shot while my face is buried in the map.

Also, calling out positions using coordinates bugs me too. Here I am, entrenched, and a fellow player calls out enemy at position F3. Where is F3? I pull up my map and begin looking.... F3 ... and I am.... F4 .... and F3 is in which direction relative to my loc.. . ... BOOM. I have, once again, been shot in the head while studying my map.

People shoot you in the head while you are looking at maps in your house? Dude you need to move!

Seriously, the map takes a lot to get used to. I have also been capped while looking at the map of death. A mini-map would be awesome.

The squad could designate one member to be the navigator and give directions to the rest of the squad. When he has his nose buried in his map the rest of the squad could cover him. Obviously if you are seperated from your squad this could not work.

I actually think it would be funny if players were represented in-game holding a map when they were looking at the map. At least that way it would be slightly more difficult to shoot them in the head (at least when facing them) because the shooter's view of their upper body would be blocked by the map.

Imagine how great it would feel to get that head shot right through the map.

I also think it would be amusing to look around and see half your team studying maps. "Oh boy, this is gonna be a tough one..."

rofl that would be hilarious. I would sneak up to people who had their maps out and fix my bayonet, then pull it back and get ready to stab. Then when they put the map down... STABBEH right in the face!
