system crash at launch

Ok, I've verified my new updates and thought everything was a go. Now, everytime I try to launch I get the blue screen of death and my system reboots. Any ideas?

Re: system crash at launch

I found this on the Steam forums. I'll try it and see if it helps:

Quote:
Fix1: Install a newer version of Zone Alarm on your system or remove it.
Fix2: Open ZA, go to program tab then to program control and add the RO executable (steamapps/RO/system), set it to super trusted (3 green bars) and allow server access. Then send ZA to tray and launch RO, after a min it will load

Yeah, Zone Alarm was known to cause issues with RO during the beta (just ask Bonehead about his issues with it). It may help to disable while playing, if possible.

Oof, blue screen of death isn't much fun. Like Strag said, disable ZA, along with any antivirus or firewall software you've got running. While you're at it might as well nix any background processes you have that you don't need. After that, update your video card drivers, take 2 Tylenol, and call me in the morning.

Re: system crash at launch

I ended up uninstalling ZA, which I don't like...but I'm behind a router anyways. I may try to reinstall ZA with a different version just to see if I can get both to run.

Uninstalling solved the problem though

I'm still having this problem as well. And they don't seem to be interested in fixing it, either...

I'm VERY disappointed.

I'm not going to uninstall my firewall just to play a game developed by people that are too lazy to do anything other than point fingers at other software companies instead of fixing their problem!

[/vent]

I'm pissed.

Same here, so now I'm firewall-less I tried Kerio but after I installed it I could no longer connect through my SBC DSL. So I uninstalled it. What a pain.......

why not just use the software firewall that is included with XP, and if you are behind a router you can turn that firewall on and let it do the work

This was buried in the RO forums:

Well, XP's firewall doesn't block outgoing traffic. My router's firewall is ZoneAlarm!

I'm simply not interested enough in a buggy game to be willing to turn off software that has become vital to me (and thousands of other people).

Sure, I could uninstall ZA and install a different software firewall, but I shouldn't have to!

Interesting, as I was told by another developer that it was a ZoneAlarm issue and that ZoneLabs would have to fix it. ZoneLabs hasn't updated ZoneAlarm since the beta, so...

Re: system crash at launch

So what is it about ZA causes the problem? If it isn't running, what file is RO reading that causes the crash? I don't think I've ever heard of a piece of software crashed because another piece of software was installed AND not running.

Re: system crash at launch

I hope they fix this soon. I reinstalled ZA and I am just not comfortable operating without it. So, in the meantime I can't play RO anymore
