The Witcher

http://www.thewitcher.com/

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this game yet. One great thing I can say about this game is that I hate role playing games, I'm more of a FPS only gamer, but this game is awesome. I've never really played any RPG in the past because they've all seemed way too boring to me. But this one is quite addictive. That intro on the site is badass. It's also the intro on the game. I guess I can't really go into great detail on what's so good about this game, since they all seem the same to me. But honestly if you're into RPG's you probably might want to check this one out. I'm not and hell, I like the game.

Re: The Witcher

I like it. GoGamer has the import version for sale, since the US version has all the nudity edited out. Just the gore left in.

It shows some hardcore stuff too. Certainly a very interesting RPG.

Re: The Witcher

8.5 on Gamestop, and I think 8.5 on IGN as well.

Re: The Witcher

This game deserves more then an 8.5.

It's nice to be playing an RPG designed for the PC that isn't an MMO or a dungeon crawler.

Agreed, thats the one thing about Oblivion that annoyed me, even Morrowind, is the Dungeons.

You're so kinky... just double checking, you have the imported version right?

I was thinking about getting this game last week. It was a toss up between Witcher and Hell Gate London. It came down to the fact that Gamespot had a copy of Hell Gate and not the Witcher. I'm enjoying Hell Gate thoroughly, but my curiosity about this game hasn't diminished. With no demo available, I'm stuck imagining what it looks like based on the few gameplay videos on the web. Now that COD Modern Warfare is out...too little time...too many games...not enough $$...

Re: The Witcher

Partial nudity, booze, blood... me like.

Actually, I'm hooked on it right now. The combat is A+, the quests arent boring me to tears and I'm actually interested in whats going to happen next. Also, you rely on many things aside from your swords, including alchemy, which, in this game, was incredibly well done.

Not to mention the fact its nice to see AI react to the surroundings. At night, they go in-doors. Lumberjacks chop wood, whores... whore...merchants bark their specials, beggars beg, children play, thugs bully... and if it begins to rain, folks run for shelter and talk about the weather. It's neat.

Had some fun earlier today. Decided I'd step into the Hairy Bear (I once knew a guy named Harry Bear... funny story...), which is a tavern, and I found a drunkard. We spoke, he wanted to drink with me, so I drank... and I drank... and I drank... and I passed out. Woke up somewhere with nearly empty pockets! So i came back and won a little cash back in some fist-fights

It's a fun game.

It's actually a real RPG, no online play. The controls are the biggest thing to get used to in this game, it uses a very new style of controls with the way you have to attack.

Excellent RPG, reminds me of the days of Planescape Torment. I couldn't pass up the chance to knock up some vampyres.

Re: The Witcher

Lazy me, its installed on my Vista, and I rarely boot into that now, considering my install of CoD4 is on my XP drive, I might have to fix this. I really want to play this some more.

Re: The Witcher

The game is great and there are some fantastic elements that drive it forwards. Not to mention the way the 'card system' is set up you just want to play the game just to collect them all like some TCG junkie. The incentive to have a threesome with 2 nurses if you go the harder 'neutral' route actually has people replaying the game 3-4 times.

That being said there are a few quirky game play elements that did frustrate me a few times.

Quests update so fast and so quietly you're lefting going back to your journal to see just what you need to do as you lose track of the information. At one point 3 quests wents through 2-4 stages each during the course of 1 conversation and I got lost trying to complete a step I apparently finished an hour ago without me knowing it.

The enviromental elements are great and lend to the 'living world' but can lead to some quirks and odd circumstances. I was supposed to protect a 'working lady' at night and as I walked by the location during the day it was empty. That's fine, the incidents happen at night and so nothing is there by day. But during dusk as it turns night out walks the lady with all 6 of the thugs from the same building to take position and start their fight. Bring new meaning to 'kiss and make up' for a fight that only happens at night.

The bystander AI is also surprisingly realistic and surprisingly stupid at the same time. At night a flock of batlike creatures decends upon a begger lady and proceed to beat the crap out of her. I wade in with my deadly dance of the blade when some passerby charges into to yell encouragement to me. Since I'm spinning around willy nilly killing everything around me I 'accidentally' clip his head off because he got to close and now I'm being attacked by every bystander within a square block. That's stupid. Clearing through the piles of bodies that were the townspeople I notice that if I walk away from a corpse the 'begger' NPCs will flock to the bodies and start stripping them of valuables before fleeing the scene with the loot. That's brilliant!

I stopped playing for a while when I suffered a case of massive 'fail'. Apparently I did something that the game didn't like and an angry mob ran by and shot up the tavern in the 3 seconds I was standing outside to kill the NPC I was supposed to talk to causing me to fail 4 different quests. Definately not cool.

The load times as well are a game killer because you don't want to wait 3-4 minutes on a high end machine to get back to the action and you can't leave because you might miss something when it does load up.
