Re: FallOut 3 TALK

I haven't heard anything about Vista 64 incompatibility. The requirements say Vista is supported but no mention of 32/64 bit. There have been a few forum posts that people are running it on Vista 64.

The game is pretty great so far. The story feels right at home to the Fallout series. It's gritty and has witty dialogue choices. Everybody has audio dialogue. It's nice to hear voices instead of read text to get immersed into the world. VATS is great to use and it's nice to fall back on regular aiming. It's a nice transition of the turn-based system from previous Fallouts to the FPS view. There are a ton of different weapons to choose from at the beginning. Just explore and you'll find really cool things.

Crappy parts so far: walking, item use and weapon switching. Until you've visited a place in person, you can't fast travel there. Using items requires going into the PIP boy. There's no quick slot to put one item you may use frequently. Switching weapons requires the PIP boy too. Sometimes you're conserving ammo by using melee weapons on rad roaches but a bigger enemy walks in that requires a gun. Switching pauses the game but it would be nice if weapon switching didn't break up the game flow.

You can set your number keys as hot keys for weapons. Go to the weapons in the pip boy, and click which ever weapon you want while holding down a number key.

Re: FallOut 3 TALK

I must say this is a bit disappointing. I made it out into the wasteland just fine, but now I get a crash after about one minute of gameplay. No matter what I do with the settings, it happens every single time. I have the 178.13 forceware drivers, so I can't imagine that's it.

Oblivion runs perfectly on my system. I'm thinking maybe it's a heat issue on the GPU with Fallout. I'm going to have to fire up RivaTuner when I get home tonight and record my temps. Might be time to buy a new fan for my vid card. The thing that baffles me is that it runs perfectly smooth right up until the screen goes black.

Re: FallOut 3 TALK

If you read the official forums on the Fallout site.. it is, expectedly for a new release, full of crashes when you leave the vault.. Not sure of the issue but it's probable a game issues and not a fan issue.. So save some $$ and hope for a patch..

Re: FallOut 3 TALK

Heh, yep. Saw this today: http://www.bethsoft.com/bgsforums/in...owtopic=892770

It's really too bad. I tried just about every setting to fix the problem, including turning all settings to low, and it makes absolutely no difference. It goes without saying, but my PC is updated, no AV or firewall running in the BG, running 178.13 nvidia drivers, and my GPU core temp is nowhere near overheating. Guess I'll have to just sit here and twidle my thumbs for a while.

I really enjoyed playing through the vault. The VATS combat is a lot of fun, especially w/ melee weapons.

Re: FallOut 3 TALK

I'm holding off on purchase to see how things pan out. My biggest decision is whether to get it on PC or PS3. Seems there are pluses/minuses with either platform.

Hmm, I played outside of the vault for about 2 hours last night, no problems.

Crosses fingers *hopefully it'll keep playing fine*

Re: FallOut 3 TALK

If you're getting a getting black screen then disable shadows and see if that helps. It could be the notorious nvidia black screen bug that plagued oblivion too.

If you want the days to go by slower you can hit the tilda key and type "set timescale to 5" default is 30 i believe. you can use any positive integer there up to 100, i don't recommend going that high though. I prefer to have a more realistic day/night cycle.

Re: FallOut 3 TALK

It's not shadows, I tried that. I've tried playing with every single setting as low as it would go, and my monitor's resolution as low as it would support, and it still crashes in the same manner.

Tonight I'm going to try fiddling with some of the multithreading variables in the ini, or try setting a single core in my processor affinity. If that doesn't work, I'm sorta stumped. The only thing that makes me feel a bit better is that there are hundreds of people in the Bethsoft forums experiencing the exact same issue.

I don't think I have ever had a crash issue like this on a PC game before. Even Oblivion works fine.

Re: FallOut 3 TALK

Once leaving the vault, yeah, it crashes for me randomly about 3-15 minutes. VATS stops working (no target parts) for what i've encountered so far (mole rats, dogs). Bringing up the pipboy will usually result in a crash.

Running nvidia 178.24 forceware on SLI'd 8600 gt config, latest DX9 on XP pro (updated). 4G RAM, quad core 2.4 intel CPU.

...

Yeah saw their forums. This game looks incredible but it looks like they really screwed the pooch on the PC QA. Lots of people having the same issues.

I'm a big fan of fallout, but it's hard to play with such frequent crashes. An hour or 2 for a crash, sure, but minutes? How the it made it out in this state beats the hell out of me!

I'm a big fan too, maybe I'll wait until after Christmas or so.

Re: FallOut 3 TALK

It's running great for me and let me just tell you that I'm very impressed so far. I'm hooked. Great all around. Even though it's cooky 40's futuristic thought, they pulled it off into a great game. You won't be disappointed with this one.

Hopefully the crashes get fixed very soon, I think bethesda is expecting this and probably working on it right now.

XP Pro, C2D cpu and a gtx 260. I can't imagine what would be causing the crashes but maybe you guys can pull your hardware stuff together and see if there are any similarities and solutions therein.

Re: FallOut 3 TALK

Sloppy, try running in windowed mode. That's the only way I can get it to work. Also, HDR still crashes it, even in windowed mode. Runs nice and smooth right up until it farts out. I really regret purchasing this.
