They've been re-developing the game since its cancellation last year. Betas should be starting up soon. There's a bit of excitement over its potential, but we'll see. I had my heart broken with this game long ago but I'm willing to give it another shot. A big help is that it's free (at least to start).
It's main competition IMO is Sony's "The Agency." Which is quite literally a modernized contemporary version of FoM. But, soonest the Agency releases is Q4 '09 I bevieve.
If you like Sci-Fi FPS with a lot of espionage, political intrigue, and the ability to create your own mission, economy, and rule large tracts of land... you might want to give it a shot. Bear in mind though, graphically it's pretty simplistic... but the base game design was fairly ingenious at the time. Just wasnt implemented properly (lack of polish, rush to release, etc.)
