There's Hegemony 268 BC... but I believe that recreates Roman times, not ancient Sparta.

Here's a direct link to the mod forum:
http://forums.taleworlds.net/index.php/board,110.0.html
I used to frequent that website A LOT. I had a vacation (2 weeks) where I would post and help out the new players. But after doing that constantly day in and day out and answering the same questions over and over, I got tired of it. :P
I don't visit the forums much anymore, but I do play the game. I'm really looking forward to a multiplayer version of the game though any mention of it on the website results in an instant thread lock and possibly a ban."They laugh at the law... but they don't laugh at me."

Re: Mount & Blade
I should venture out of the 2142 forums more often. I was tired of 2142 and need a single player distraction, and as Damonte said, hours passed in what felt like minutes.

Re: Mount & Blade
I was the beneficiary of a weird-ass bug in my current game in the Native Expanded mod. I sold four Footmen prisoners to a slaver for - hold your britches - 100,000,000 denar apiece. That's right, in the span of four button clicks, I went from a moderately-wealthy mercenary captain with 6,000 denar in the bank to a 400 million powerhouse.

Re: Mount & Blade
My 10 year old son came back from a sleepover talking about this game and I checked out the Steam demo. Dang it's addictive! Echo everything good above, 10 months later.
Mount & Blade now $9.99 from NewEgg with free shipping. I ordered two, for Christmas.

Stumbled upon this maybe 2-3 years a go (might have been the 0.751 version). Truly great experience. The countles hours spend riding around whacking people...
The only mod that I played for a time was The Last Days mod. Basicly set in LOTR universe. Good stuff as well. I´m not sure if they have upgraded the mod for newer M&B versions though.Proud to have been part of the 101st Siege Corps of Engineers

Re: Mount & Blade
I've been playing around with the trial version for the last couple of days and it seems like a pretty good game. Still need a lot more practice with the combat though.

What's the best way to earn money at the beginning?
I also just placed the order at Newegg. Thanks for the heads up with that link.

Re: Mount & Blade
My game arrived today ... but now I have to either sneak mine open and only play when my son doesn't see or wait for us both until Christmas.

I'm still new at it, too, but the best part of combat I've found is to use a lance or other polearm. Don't hold the attack button at all, just get up to gallop speed and you'll couch the lance, aim it at someone and KERPOW! It's awesome.
I'm wondering about the cash thing as well. With prisoner management skill you can capture enemies you knock out, and in the taverns there are wandering slave traders you can sell them to for like 50 dinars each. Maybe someone else will share a better way.

Re: Mount & Blade
I haven't played in awhile so my memory may be off but the best way that I remember to make money is by attacking other warbands, keep the equipment you want/need and sell off the excess for cash.
Just stay away from the horse archers when your getting started because they are a pain to kill off on their horses.Ikariam Wars = Talus - Sulfur, Talanium - Marble, Talopolis - Wine, Talusgrad - Crystal, Talusberg - Wine.

Re: Mount & Blade
I did. I played it a few times. For me (your experience may differ), it wasn't all that fun. The experience was marred with a lot of "how exactly did I just die" moments. The good players called it "learn to play", but from what I saw you basically joined the Nord faction when available and picked a two-hander and just swing it around like a madman. It got boring and stupid pretty fast, so I uninstalled. The version I played was a few versions behind what the beta is currently running, so I haven't seen what the changes have been.

Re: Mount & Blade
The beta looked promising, if some good mods are made.
A PR like mod for it, which forces teamwork and has some good objectives, would be really awesome
the vanilla game, seemed really repetitive and boring, with no real chance at teamwork.
