Re: Pirates of the Burning Sea
hehe... ok, I guess I can - a bit!
This game just has a certain flavor and appeal that's tough to put my finger on. Ironic thing is, it's really not that BIG of a game (not like WoW, EQ, or TR for that matter). It just has the elements needed to be a great game. I look at PotBS as what EVE SHOULD'VE been (yes, I said it). No game yet released comes close to PotBS's "PvP economy" system. EVE is the closest, but EVE is so huge and it takes so long to get from one place to another that Campaigns against other factions take way too much planning and time to implement. PotBS hit the "sweet spot" so to speak.
I cant go into any real great detail. Generally, the graphics are top-notch in naval combat... but the avatar system is an afterthought basically. This is okay though, because you dont spend all your time as an avatar anyways. Avatar combat isnt finished yet, but it has tons of potential. I've been outmatched at sea and grappled my enemies to fight up close, evening the odds... this type of gameplay is a nice touch. Of course, a good primer in naval tactics also helps.
That's all I'm sayin for now... in a nutshell - PotBS is EVE in the Caribbean, cept with avatars, dungeons, much quicker gameplay, but much smaller game size.
I was half hoping I wouldnt like it because I really cant take on 4 MMOs in 6 months (AoC, WAR, PotBS, and TR). And even though PotBS is a small game, you can piss away a day just screwin around with the trading system. Economy reminds me alot of SWG, but without the actual structures (PotBS doesnt have graphics for warehouses, farms, etc... just icons). Remember how crackheaded SWG economy, crafting, and trading was? You could never fire a shot a be completely wrapped up in it. PotBS took this Sandbox approach like SOE did (originally). EVE lacks it due to shear size (it's more like a coastline compared to a sandbox).
Another hidden plus with PotBS... chics will dig this game. My gf has already given me permission to play it.
It has that certain romanticism that women like. It also has historical realism. This also has the strange effect of causing automatic Roleplay.... kinda weird actually. Havent had that happen in a game in a real long time. Yelling at my screen and what-not. Typing "yar" and "anyone up for a Pale Ale?" in chat - kinda ridiculous. Makes me feel like a kid in a pirate costume on Halloween.

Re: Pirates of the Burning Sea
sweeeet

see thinks you can say without breaking NDA.
SWG economy woot woot!!!! + sounds like great PVP( which I hoped it would be since following the game from 2005).
we need a separate forum for this game, and Yoshi suggested TTC - Tactical Trading Company guild(society).
British privateer here I come. (I'm sure I'll try Pirates of course)

Re: Pirates of the Burning Sea
I wish I could be more specific. But, I aint sayin PotBS is the next WoW... far from it. Just a good little MMO (i'll leave it at that). They got right what they needed to get right.
As for how TG should go society-wise in this game... I dont really have an opinion yet because I've only sampled British so far. I'd say we could field a society in every nation (in true squad-like TG style), but then we'd run into PvP issues between societies and we'd probably be less in number... might be interesting though. Could add a bit of intra-guild competition into the game. Eventually, one Society would reign supreme in TG and THAT would be the one mostly represented.
If we could get everyone to agree on one country though, that'd be great. Of course, pirate is an option too.
I DEFINITELY dont think a decision should be made until the NDA is lifted, because right now too many people are in the dark about the game.

Re: Pirates of the Burning Sea
good god I dont want it to be next WoW, cause thats when its all over for the game(ie SWG: NGE)
Gear and stats(agility, stamina, etc) dependent games are not fun for me anymore, better PVP and better economy is what I'm after. As well as refreshing non fantasy environment.
Check this link here sounds like fun :P

Re: Pirates of the Burning Sea
Oh no, it's NOTHING like WoW... I just made that statement in regards to the SIZE of the game and the impact it may have on gaming. Trust me, PotBS will be somewhat of a sleeper hit, but it wont command the numbers WoW did.
As for the Final Battle mechanics, they are definitely awesome. Havent tested it yet obviously. And I aint sayin anything more then that :X

Re: Pirates of the Burning Sea
Here's a sneak look at the economy through a beta-testers eyes (she got permission to post it).
http://female-gamer.com/blog/2007/10...potbs-economy/
This review has most of the elements I would've talked about, but is severely lacking in how PvP influences the game. Fact is, it IS the game. It's all about controlling ports with the resources you need... period. No matter how you cut it, you MUST in some way deal with PvP (either directly or indirectly) in order to properly play PotBS. Again, this makes it a lot like EVE. There IS a PvE element to ports, but as expected... the gains arent as good. The first thing they teach is, "the more risk, the more the reward."
I REALLY like the AH system. It reminds me of Ebay actually, and feels more like a real auction. Whereas WoW just feels like you're buying something. The AH UI is VERY user friendly and is loaded with info... ala EVE (albeit not quite as extensive).
As you can see from the article, the economy is quite awesome. They basically minimized the fluff and concentrated on the substance (hence, no graphics). PotBS is really not about Naval Combat and Pirates (although if that's your thing so be it)... it's about money, power, and respect.
