Personally, most of my experience with RPGs has been disappointing at best. All the stats, figures, levelling up and so on seem way to artificial for me. That's why I'm really enjoying Oblivion - you don't have to actively think about such things, and they are hidden below the surface. For example, my character is gradually growing faster because of the time I've spent trekking over mountain ranges, and my archery damage improves with the time I've spent hunting deer.

The combat system is surprisingly enjoyable. To me, it seems more like an FPS than a standard RPG. My experience in ranged combat has been thrilling to say the least - rather than playing hack'n'slash style, I've had to dodge from cover to cover, popping out to snipe with poisoned arrows. Thrusts, blocks, and other elements of swordsmanship are in effect, and IMO it feels incredibly dynamic.

Re: The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

You want to know how good this game is? I got it on Tuesday afternoon and have been playing it so much that this is the second time I've opened my browser (I had to look up movie times for my mother) since I got it, and it's now Saturday night. (This is coming from someone who usually spends at least an hour a day staring just at these forums on his screen)

I love just about everything in this game. I haven't really enjoyed the melee combat much yet though since my only current character is a super sneaky thief. He kicks butt at ranged combat, but his sword skills are still lacking. He spends so much time reeling after each blow that I never get a chance to attack back. Normally I sneak around in the dark and snipe things with my bow, so I have little need for melee combat except for the quests where you have to get ambushed to finish them though. (You'll understand once you find one).

My other big complaint is that there is very little stuff that is worth stealing. Most of the merchants only carry basic armour and weapons. Sometimes they'll have one really good piece of equipment, but it will be one of those items that only show up in their inventory when you want to buy something. It doesn't physically exist in their shop or on their person, so you can't steal it, even if you kill the person. The fighters guilds often have display cases that are locked with 'Very Hard' level locks (the hardest ones I've ever come across) and they appear to have Elven, Glass, and Dwarven equipment. Of course I want to steal that, so I bust into the guild at 3am, pick the locks after many attempts, and then finally get to the goods only to find out that they're all fakes. Every fighters' guild I've broken into has FAKE weapons!

The last thing that really bugs me is that the Kajit and Argonian females all have the same voice (same voice actor) and they are all really annoying. The other races have more varitey, but those two seem to have none. Other than those three things, I have found pretty much nothing that I dislike about this game.

I have a few questions for the others here who have been playing though too. Where is the cheapest house you can buy? The only one I've seen was 10,000 gold. I only have ~6,500 but I'd also like to buy a horse (one of those super fast black ones). I have yet to find any secure location to store things. I tried storing my spare stuff in a chest in the mages guild, and it stayed there for a while (a few hours in real life , I think), but it eventually all disappeared when I came to use it.

Does anyone know exactly how vampirism works? The best I've figured out is that if you contract the disease (and don't cure yourself) that will get a message after you've rested a cretain amount of time that you'v become a vampire. You get the 'Hunter's Vision' lesser power and +5 point boosts to a bunch of stats. If you don't bite anyone for long enough then you get another cryptic message and then you have +10 stat boosts and you take damage from the sun. Then if you do bite someone again you go back to +5 stat boosts and you no longer get damage from the sun. Is this all that happens or is there more? In Morrowind vampires got HUGE stat bonuses (like +30 in some skills). Have the bonuses been decreased in Oblivion or have I just not found them all?

Has anyone else found any NPCs that have multiple voices? I've found one or two that change voices mid conversation (before I even click a response), but the most common ones I've found are the beggars who have a really whiny voice normally, but if you ask them about something for a quest (usually for the theive's guild) then they switch to a normal voice to talk about that.

    Geez, that was long!

Re: The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

I understand how people enjoy the ranged attacks, but how do people feel about melee? I'm playing a mage/fighter style and don't really care for the close combat in this game. I hope it will get better, but it doesn't seem to be very deep. I do like the blocking/parrying but the press the button repeatedly to kill your foe just doesn't seem as good as the ranged attacking/dodging.

I know there are a couple of different sword attacks, but really they all seem the same to me. What does everyone else think? Am I missing some aspect of sword fighting?

All in all I'm enjoying the game so far, but I'm not blown away by it yet. I've only played for a few hours so this may change.

I haven't done a whole lot of melee combat, but I mostly enjoy it. It seems pretty dynamic to me and I'm still a novice swordsman. You can do a lunging attack by moving forward and holding the attack button, you can do quick slashes by tapping the button and you can do big wind up crushing blows by holding the button down. Combine that with blocking and moving back and foward and it feels pretty spot on to me. But I do agree, I enjoy my bow and arrow much more. I love the way the enemies slow down and actually react when you hit them while they are running toward you.

I read all of Rick's post, and all I got was this lousy sig.

I enjoy the melee combat. Slash slash block, move backwards, lunge, block, slash thrust block, run the heck away and gulp down potions, lure the clannfear over a cliff, slash block. It's exciting and if it's ever too hard or too easy you can just go in and slide the difficulty around.

I like sneaking up behind guys and getting a head shot with the bow and arrow. They drop like a brick. Yesterday I knocked a guy over a balcony, it was so funny.

If I paralzye someone and then shove them off a cliff do they take falling damage? I think I might go try this if nobody already knows. I'd love to make some sort of parlyzing posion to put on my sword, sneak up behind someone on a bridge and then send them falling to their death. They ought to shatter when they hit the ground!

Don't even bother paralyzing them. Just run at them and beat them around a bit. If you keep pushing forward with your shield and your weapon, they have no choice but to back down. I've taken care of some pretty tough enemies by tricking them into walking near a cliff, then just smashing them over it.

    Suckers.

Well, I bit the bullet, and got the game. Like I said earlier, this is my first RPG title. 0_0 I think I might have a little problem. I can't stop playing the darn thing.I can't belive how huge the game is!! I am really enjoying it, and thank God there is no multiplayer, or I may be lost forever.

I found that out the hard way. The tips on the loading screens always say to go talk to whoever is in charge in town (Counts/Countesses) to buy a house. Of course there is no Count in the Imperial City, and the emperor is dead. So what do I do? I busted into the Elder Council chambers! There was only one person there and he kept yelling at me to leave him alone. I then proceded to run around town shaking down every rich guy I could find for information. Eventually I did find the Office of Imperial Commerce and get my house, but not before a few killing rampages and game reloads.

I think I'm gonna start another game already. I haven't even touched the main quest with my sneaky theif character and he is at level 9. The problem is that he gets his but kicked in close quarters combat since he does most of his damage with a bow. Bows don't help you much when you have a pack of deranged zombies bashing your head in and you have no room to move. I think I'll make a battlemage character. He'll have heavy armour and a big claymore (or an axe, I can't decide) to do damage and lots of spells in just about every school except destruction. (Finally I get the pack of zombies to kill everyone with!!!)

Re: The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

I realize that sleeping is required for leveling up, and regenerating, etc, but so far I am at a loss as to why a house is necessary. An I missing something? I seem to be getting by so far, although I am really just getting started.
