Unfortunately, I don't play enough RPG to fill out all the categories. Just the following: Fallout 1 and 2, NWN, Daggerfall....sigh and I did play EQ before too before I woke up and realize that it wasn't a computer game, it was crack :P

Go forth and kill people!!!!

graphics: Secret of Mana 2 (aka Seiken Densetsu 3, only released in Japan for super famicon)... mmm pretty pretty sprites, sexy summons, everything was delicious
gameplay: SoM2 had great action/rpg type gameplay, while FF3 was my favorite in terms of turn-based style.
storyline: Mmmm FF3... i like FF3 better than chrono trigger, mainly because FF3 had more interesting characters. Mime + yeti > princess and frog. FF2 had a great story for it's time i suppose, but it got a little lame towards the end :P the FF2 characters were also great.
badguy: definitely kefka... such crazy evilness! i agree with eclipse here. atma weapon also had some cool background music to it (if you really wanted to have fun, you could rasp him to death :P)
goodguys: augh, this is turning out to be just like eclipse's. whatever he said about FF3 and CT, and only kain from FF2 really. I liked FF7's cast too, and only squall from FF8 (he had a decent design)
Overall: FF3. Without a doubt the greatest conceived, designed, and executed I've ever played, some games may excel over it in specific areas, but none have ever come close to its greatness*
*: Except CT, which is a distant 2nd.

Jesus people, have you had you head in the sand you whole lives?
Dungeon Master is by far the best RPG game EVER!!!!!

FROM THE TACTICAL GAMER PRIMER.
3) Support game play in a near-simulation environment. Where the focus of play would not be solely on doing what it takes to win, but doing so utilizing real-world combat strategy and tactics rather than leveraging exploits provided to players by the design of the game engine.

Re: Best RPG (whatever) of all time.
Snes Zelda was the best. EVER. In that series. But I consider Zelda an adventure game series, not RPG.
I can't think of one computer based RPG that I've ever liked. KOTOR is alright, but that's a port from xbox. Of course, my major complaint with these is the very open-endedness that most people love about them. A RPG is a story told by the GM with the help of the players. Open-ended games tend to feel more like worlds you're allowed to get lost in.
As for my votes, I'm leaning heavily towards Slurgi's original take. NWN did some great things with lighting, but FFX looked spectacular start to finish. Not to mention the wildly appropriate musical scores.
And who could possibly think any badguy will ever compete with Kefka? That boy was nuts.

Re: Best RPG (whatever) of all time.
Zelda isnt an RPG though.
I am not a super big RPG fan (RPG stands for "really pathetic game" right?). I dont like Final Fantasy, I however liked part 7. But as for my favor RPG, it would probably have to be "Breath of Fire" series. Big ass kicking dragons and magik.... gotta love it!

Re: Best RPG (whatever) of all time.
zelda is an RPG, it was the best until diablo came out.
best RPG for this year is WoW, and probably next year too.
the best of all time though, id have to go with zelda. Ofcourse WoW very well will take that title.

This is a discussion of Role Playing Games, Turb.. That excludes Nintendo games and anything remotely similar to Diablo.
