Police should have the best equipment suitable for their job. If their job is indistinguishable from what the military does, then the police have ceased to be police and have become either a military or paramilitary force. In which case their duties should be scaled back.

I'd like to see some minimum sentencing for corruption or abuse of privilege/power. In a system that loves to lock people up, it never ceases to amaze me how people go free for big crimes and spend their life in jail for little ones.

On top of that, more emphasis on civilian over site. In the end, the police force exists to serve the needs of the people. The people should have no difficulty calling shenanigans should things go off course.

A police officer who threatens someone, beats them, and arrests them on false charges should be spending many years behind bars. A group of police officers that do this in each others presence are criminals, consenting to the actions of others by not stopping them (which is their job, to stop people from breaking the law, even if those people are other police officers). A civilian can chose not to intervene when he witnesses a crime. A police officer does not have that choice, he MUST step in to defend a victim.

This tirade, for example, seems criminal to me.

This man lost his job. Clearly he earned it. What I'd like to know is why he isn't behind bars for threatening someone with his power. To threaten someone with false arrest is like robbing a store with a candybar in your pocket that you claim to be a gun. You can say it was only a candy bar, but to the victim it was a gun. I believe thats the legal interpretation, anyway.

Basically, posse comitatus deals with the issue of the military being engaged in domestic control/ martial law. The act is meant to curtail the ability of the military to be used on citizens. Unfortunately posse comitatus has been recently amended and now there are several ways for the president to enact states of emergency to warrant the use of the military for martial law. Most notably, the vague language means martial law becomes something he can engage at his discretion with little recourse on the side of congress.

Mentholated, I think you were under the impression that tybalt was approving of the use of military. He wasn't. What he was saying is that if police are so equipped and deployed that the resemble military units, then there is really no distinction and that they need to be 'scaled back' to the role of policing like police, and not like paramilitary.

I dont have a problem with all forms of law enforcement. I do have a huge problem with Selmer PD. Back 5 years ago when i was in High School. I remember being pulled over and my car being torn apart for drugs. They found my stash and and told me to put my car back together and get the hell out of here! well, I was happy as hell that i didnt go to jail or anything till the next day. When i pulled up at school and went in. I was stopped in the halls by a kid i had never seen before in my life. He laughs as he says thanks for the bud man. His dad was the officer on duty that night. He pulled me over, got my sh*t and went home to smoke it with his son. That is some CRAP!

I remembered the worst run-in I've ever had with a cop so I figured Id post it.

This happened waaaaay back many years ago when I was still in high school and had just gotten my license. I drove a little Nissan front wheel drive that was a serious beater. It was all I could afford and constantly broke down. Also note that I had never even been pulled over before this. Never been in any kind of trouble nor caused any.

Its the middle of winter in Indiana and there's nearly a foot of snow on the ground and its biting cold, but the roads are remotely clear so a friend and I decide to go into town to get some food.

About halfway there (2 miles) my car breaks down....just shuts off and wont start again at all. So, we start to shove the thing through the snow to the side of the road. Being a high school student I wasn't the best at thinking ahead and neither of us had brought gloves or hats. We figured we'd be in the car the whole way. So, we're freezing our nuggets off working to get this jalopy off to the side of the road.

We're most of the way done, sweating despite the cold, when a local police cruiser glides up to us and stops. The officer asks what we're doing and I explain about the breakdown. Now at this time I'm a bit worried hes gonna tow my car, but at least we'll get a ride home. Protect and serve, right?

The officer tells us "Get it all the way off the road." and leaves. Just leaves. Leaves my friend and I stranded on the side of the road. He couldn't have known how far I was from home.
(no, he didn't run my plates he came from the way I was headed and IN doesn't have front plates)

All I could do the long, long walk home was wish some horrible, painful death on that piece of crap officer.

Thats why I hate THAT cop.

So, in short, my suggestion for one way of improving officer/civilian relations? Don't leave them stranded on the side of the road in the dead of winter with no source of warmth or rescue. (no, I didnt have a cellphone, I could barely afford to pay attention)

I used to have a motorized Go-Kart when I was young. Back in Houston (living in Mission Bend), we'd drive it all around the neighborhood. I was "pulled over" by a Houston officer who explained to me nicely: "Son, I can't have you driving that on the street, you'll need to stay on the sidewalk, using the street only to turn around. And you really should wear a helmet, it could save your life." I remember (at the age of 6-7) being completely enamored by the genuine caring and kindness of the officer. I would later determine that this is what all cops were like (let's face it, how many run-ins does the average 7 year-old have with an officer?) and then have that attitude stomped on a few years later.

When we moved to Weston Lakes (I was around 9-10), the POA (I could go on for days on the whole POA system) called the cops on me for driving my Go-Kart. What then proceeded to happen was me being threatened with jail-time by a Fort Bend county Sheriff for driving on private roads. I mean literal "If I catch you doing this again, I'll have to arrest you and you'll go to jail" BS macho cop stuff. This was the second time in my life I'd ever had a conversation with an officer.

I never did tell me mom about that. Who knows what she would have done. All I know is I quit using my Go-Kart and that started the long-line of absolutely detestable run-ins with County Cops over the years. I swear these guys just ooze machismo. It's like a contest on "who can be the worst peace officer" with them. I did find out later that most County Cops absolutely loathed private communities because they had no real jurisdiction out there up until the laws were updated (in 2001, I think). More macho BS.

I've met one decent county cop in my days (and I've ran into quite a few of them in both official and recreational capacities), whereas I can't really say a bad thing about any City Cop or Highway Patrolman I've met. They might be "hard-line" at first, but when they realize you aren't out to cause trouble, that attitude drops and they act like normal people.
