Re: Ok, why do YOU hate the cops...

I dunno, sounds like something the whiz kids in DC would do. We'd be better off converting them to Bastiat inspired "trench digging brigades" if it came to that.

Re: Ok, why do YOU hate the cops...

1. how old are you? (it is my belief that the younger crowd is more anti-police (16 to 25))

i am 14 years old

2. have you ever been arrested? where you innocent?

nope

3. why do you hate cops, ok maybe hate is strong, dislike cops?

i dislike, actually i would more accurately say distrust, cops because i believe they have too much power and not enough control of it. a lot of cops become addicted to adrenaline, the chemical in our body. a cop writing his first ticket, his hand will be so shaky he can barely right it. this is because of the enormous adrenaline boost that his body is not used to. after a couple hundred tickets he does not get the same rush. this is what causes a lot of cops to want to move up to higher positions for higher work. a lot of them move up for other reasons, such as wanting to fight for the greater good. anyways, the higher up they get they get more adrenaline for doing things like drug busts. their body builds a resistance to the chemical, and then they need more of it for the same rush.

even if someone is innocent, the moment a cop pulls up everybody becomes paranoid. im going to quote Michael Righi (a guy who was arrested for ignoring the manager of a store), "...it creates a fear-of-authority atmosphere which can be all too easily abused."

also i guess part of it is that i disagree with some of the laws in this country. also, the other day i was the passenger and my mom was driving, she got pulled over and received a ticket for going 45mph when the limit was 40.

4. is there any hope for you to change your mind about cops?

im always open minded

5. what, as cops could we do better to make citizens appreciate/like us?

-stop using tasers and rubber bullets and other supposedly non-lethal weapons
-stop busting small time drug users and others who are not harming anyone but themselves
-spend your time effectively, and pull over the reckless drivers instead of the innocent ones.

Re: Ok, why do YOU hate the cops...

I was just in a car accident that a cop caused just over two months ago. He made an illegal turn (no lights or anything) and pulled out infront of the car I was riding in. I broke 3 vertibre in my back and had to wear a brace for two months. On top of this I now have two titanium rods holding my lower spine together and set off airport metal detectors. He never visited me during the week and a half I was in the hospital. He suffered no injuries.

In my case, police have done more to harm me than protect...that is why I hate cops.

PS: As a virginian I am also subject to speeding tickets in excess of $1000 dollars.

ding the restaurant owner into convulsions and causing him to bite off a piece of his tongue.

Alexander Mendez, who with his wife owns Guardi's Pizza and Catering, 16711 S. 80th Ave., filed a lawsuit Thursday in the federal court. The couple said Officer Joseph Vega shot Mendez in the head and shoulders with a Taser gun as part of a failed prank last June.

Police Chief Michael O'Connell referred questions about the incident to village administration. Mayor Ed Zabrocki said the Taser shot was an accident and all Taser guns were recalled after the incident.

Vega was disciplined for taking the Taser gun out of his holster, Zabrocki said. Zabrocki said attorneys advised him not to provide any more details.

According to the lawsuit, about 9 p.m. June 15, Vega came to Guardi's and ordered pasta salad. When Mendez walked into the cooler to get the food, Vega asked Mendez's wife if she wanted to see Vega scare her husband. She said "no," according to court documents.

Then, Vega allegedly pointed the gun at Mendez's head and fired, causing the prongs to stick to Mendez's right temple and collarbone. Mendez went into convulsions and later became unconscious. He also bit off a piece of his tongue, the lawsuit said.

Vega is accused of immediately removing the Taser prongs, which caused Mendez to bleed profusely. Vega then called for back-up, and a supervisor and two detectives showed up and confiscated bloody towels, Mendez's bloody glasses, the Taser prongs and the video surveillance equipment in the restaurant, the lawsuit claims.

Reading a prepared statement, Zabrocki said Vega was conducting a routine check on the business when he noticed his Taser safety deactivated. While resecuring it, the Taser accidentally discharged, striking Mendez in the head and chest and knocking him to the ground, Zabrocki said.

Mendez was sent to a local hospital, treated for his injuries and released the next day, Zabrocki said.

Vega "suffered a stress reaction" and was sent to the hospital and released, the mayor said.

Police investigated the incident, recalled all Tasers issued to officers and sent the devices to Taser International Incorporated in Scottsdale, Ariz., to test for defects, Zabrocki said. All Tasers were returned certified and approved for continued use, he said.

All 79 of Tinley Park's police officers have a Taser gun, the mayor said.

Zabrocki said he could not comment on evidence collected at the scene.

Mendez and his wife continue to suffer physical and emotional pain and have lost income because of the incident, the lawsuit alleges. They could not be reached for comment.

A trial date has not been scheduled for the case

It's a shame that such a useful less then lethal device is going to end up shelved because of a few immature and/or stupid people not understanding that just because something isn't classified as a deadly weapon, you shouldn't play jokes with them or overuse them.

That failing in this case wasn't the taser. It's a tool that cops should have (and probably have) fought to have as part of their "toolkit" for years. In 99% of cases it a much safer alternative than forcing a physical confrontation with a suspect.

Unfortunately, when the wrong officers were allowed to use it, it's become a serious PR issue. When I first saw the posts about cops having tasers would lead the their overuse and abuse, I scoffed at this notion and I was wrong for the most part. Quite a few officers seem to be using it as a crutch. Instead of having to choose between talking a situation down and resulting to fisticuffs, the taser allows a quick resolution besides diplomacy.

I normally don't mind being wrong if my idea wasn't workable to begin with. But the taser should be out there saving lives and ending possible violent situations when the next step would be a forced physical confrontation and/or the use of deadly force. Now it seems like it's a "Tase him/her just to be safe" kind of device.

Anyways, the point I'm trying to make (before I derailed myself) is this really wasn't a cop acting in an official capacity. It's just one idiot who happened to have a police issue taser. True, he should know better as a cop, but this story wouldn't have surprised me anymore if it was just a guy who wasn't a cop.

If he weren't a cop, then the part where the evidence was confiscated would be pretty surprising!

Don't hate them but am rather indifferent to them. Sadly there are no more Peace Officers, only Law Enforcement officers. Your comment on the day shift applies here. Police seem to be a branch of the IRS now, and could give a **** about crime, as catching criminals makes gubmint no money. This also has to do with the administration, as there are many good cops out there. When you get older in life you get to learn whenever the government is involved 90% of the time it's bad for Joe Citizen.

If I had my choice, I'd pay way less taxes select no police support and have my RKBA un-infringed.

I love my country, it's the government I'm not too thrilled about.

I would agree with you completely in this case if it weren't for the fact that the guy's supervisor showed up, confiscated the evidence and then the department turned around and tried to play it off like it was some sort of accident and the officer really didn't mean to do it. I think that part of the article re-enforces my earlier assertion that I have trouble trusting the police because they feel they are (and in cases like these, actually are) above the law. What do you think would happen to me if I walked into some restaurant and tazed the manager because I thought it would be funny? Would the police show up, confiscate evidence of any wrongdoing and then make a statement basically absolving me of any responsibility for my actions?

In any service oriented industry the quality of service goes up when the economy is on a down swing. People with a higher level of functioning take jobs they may not take in a thriving economy. Why not bring the economy to them. If you raise police salaries you will attract higher functioning people. I'm not necessarily talking about education. While I certainly agree it takes a certain kind of person to be a cop. I would be surprised to find out that there aren't scores of very qualified people who would like to be cops but 40k is just not enough in todays America. And they can make 65k doing many other things.
You have got to be kidding. My family only has one person working and she makes about 32k a year (net). Shes supporting a whole family. Now, granted, shes not a cop, but all that says is that maybe cops should become accountants.

Re: Ok, why do YOU hate the cops...

You know, I hate to double post but after I read fenix's post, I realized something. The more the non-lethal alternatives are abused, the more citizens are going to resort to lethal methods of self defense against them. Changing the tools won't solve anything, changing the people will.

Re: Ok, why do YOU hate the cops...

I hate to bring up old wounds but the fact that this guy is suspended with pay indicates a huge problem with law enforcement in our country. As a teacher, if I were to put a kid in a headlock, throw him to the ground and threaten his life, you'd better believe that I wouldn't be suspended with pay. Any other profession and this low-life would be sitting in jail and his kids would be in foster care. I'm pretty sure that the VAST majority of cops would never do anything like this. I'm also pretty sure that the majority of police officers would stick up or cover up for this guy to protect his job.
