And then the consequences for breaking them occasionally hit you in the face. If its worth it for you to break the law, you need to be prepared to accept the risk associated with it. If everyone could decide which law was stupid and ought to be broken, the entire point of law would be missed.

Re: Ok, why do YOU hate the cops...

This really isn't a matter of opinion, no matter how you FEEL the cop was in legal wrong regardless of whether or not a citation for skateboarding was warranted.

You guys wax on and on about breaking the skateboarding law and then completely ignore the assault and battery performed by the officer. That cop should be in jail for assault -- those kids should be at home explaining why they got a citation for skate boarding.

Its examples like this that show why more important conclusions can't reached with a consensus -- even when the reality of the matter is so plainly obvious some people refuse to just call it like it is because it doesn't jive with their emotions or subjective opinions.

I'm in complete agreement.

Re: Ok, why do YOU hate the cops...

the fact is, that all we have is a video, now, if in addition to the video we were told that there is a law in baltimore that prohibits skaters from skating, and if we were given some other background info it would have been helpful. Maybe next time this artsy fartsy kid will try and put that in his video... - Ha Jk.

But seriously horrible reporting by the reporters, it would be nice to have some background info....but then again, this probably broke up the monotony of the baltimore news stations, because i hear that many a murder/drug deal gone bad/stabbin' happen's in baltimore.

You're right. We should always obey the law.

Signed,

Martin Luther King, Jr.
Ghandi,
Thomas Jefferson,
Ben Franklin,
Paul Revere...

The list goes on. Obviously this isn't that great of a comparison (these people were fighting against real tyranny and not just some stupid law that doesn't make any sense) but the point stands. Laws are not always just nor do they always make sense. In those cases, there is absolutely nothing wrong with breaking them. I feel the same way about people who choose to smoke pot.

Buckets I like that you have listed some key figures in United States and Indian History, however, and it might just be me but I am confused why you listed those key historical figures.

But let me get back to a law that might not allow certain simple modes of transportation i.e. roller-blades, skateboards, and scooters in an area during specific months of a year or at certain times. The main reason being pedestrian traffic, which especially during summer months is most likely very high especially in and around the area where I saw the Sign in Westhampton Beach L.I. and it could be the reason why it was put in place there in that spot in baltimore, however I don't have any proof because I haven't looked it up nor did i hear it in the reporters report.

But I bring up pedestrian traffic and let me break it down even further, young children walking with parents, toddlers in strollers, senior citizens walking, etc etc....now if a teenager was on a skateboard going down a sidewalk with large bunches of people walking could it cause an few mishaps? Same thing with rollerbladers on sidewalks or both the 2 previous simple modes of transportation along with scooters on the street where vehicle traffic might be much particularly around those months. It could very well be.

Basically what I am getting at is that those particular laws in this one town in Long Island, and possibly in this area in Baltimore (though i have no proof) are enforced for........get this, its a doozy, SAFETY.

It might not seem fair or just, but its a law, and on a busy saturday it helps.

Now smoking pot is a whole other issue, and i don't want to go down that path that probably deserves a thread or a forum in its own. However if you "hate" the police because of a Safety Law I would hate to see you if they enforced a law that really chapped your arse.

**the previous link i submitted i thought included the law about no skateboarding and rollerblading, however its much more reading than i can do at work right now i will read it when i can and see if it actually has the law instead of what google stated that might just be a suggestion, and it might be included in another link**

Re: Ok, why do YOU hate the cops...

First of all,I don't *hate* the police. I do have a general mistrust for them and my reasons for feeling that way are well documented in this very thread.

Secondly, I listed those historical figures because they all changed the world by breaking unjust laws. While I am in no way trying to imply that some kids skateboarding in an off limits area, I think it illustrates a point of obeying the law simply because it IS the law. Sometimes laws should be broken and unless they are challenged by people who are willing to accept the consequences (and are willing to use those consequences to illustrate a point about the injustice of those particular laws), they will stand in perpetuity.

Can't say I disagree...

But, in all reality, the majority of kids these days don't challenge laws to change them. Rebellion is a blind trend that depends on the naiveté of youth anymore. Most of the time there isn't really a forethought to the action. I have more respect for the men you listed than the stupid hippies smoking weed on my beach in public who cry foul when they get caught. Now, don't get me wrong, I think the marijuana prohibition is a crock...but these kids have no idea why they're really rebelling at all. It just seems cool. It's sadly the trend of our age. I really hope someday a well thought rebellion will erupt from the people to challenge the laws that are unjust in this country...but, that too, is a pipe dream anymore.

Maybe the owner of said property when some idiot kid cracks his skull open on private property and his parents sue the owner.

Also, the attention whoring is dangerous in of itself. Many skateboarders ride in these places so people see their "mad skillz" or lack thereof. If I had a nickel for every time the neighbor's kid looked back, saw my truck coming, then tried a kick-flip only to land on his ass.... I'd have a lot of nickels.

These kids tend to be no different than street racers on your local county road. They could find a race track near-by (or a skate park), but they'd rather risk injury in the feeble attempt to impress complete strangers. What happens when these idiots run into pedestrians or fly into traffic and get creamed?

Re: Ok, why do YOU hate the cops...

In defense of skaters...I grew up near Rose Hill which was frequented by skaters like Tony Hawk and Steve Cabellero back in my day. I was never much of a skater, but my cousin (who went pro) was. I was exposed to a lot of skate culture at the time. I can say, most skaters don't really give a rats about the average onlooker...they want to impress their peers and attempt the most radical tricks imagined. Rose Hill was a neighborhood constructed into the side of a hill, obviously. The incline of the hill was treacherous and I witnessed many a skater take a paramedic ride as a result of skating there. It was 1337 so to speak. This tends to be the draw for most skaters to skate in public and illegal places. Not much different than most gamers and their need to show off their skillz in front of other gamers.

Cute video. Somehow I just don't see a resemblance between those cops and the irate anti skater radio-remote-control-car hater

Ummm, that's the point of the video: nobody was there to videotape him when he delivered the baby, fixed the bicycle, or stopped the armed robbery.

If he did do those things, would that excuse him from his behavior?

Mitigating, maybe --- exonerating, certainly not.
