Re: Ok, why do YOU hate the cops...

Ya know Switch, it seems like you have all the answers and you seem to know what it takes to be a cop, so why not go for a ride a long with your local precinct? Spend a few hours observing and asking questions to a police officer. Why don't you try to find out what they go through and see if you can get a better understanding of what they have to go through. I know there are A-holes for cops and I don't excuse them from their poor judgment in behavior in some situations and I certainly don't like some of the attitudes that SOME cops have all the time but I still respect the job that they do whether they are a-holes or not, because it isn't easy. So try walking a mile in their shoes and maybe you might find a little different opinion of police officers. Just a thought

Yh, that's great. How's about I become a vigilante and stop a robbery, and then rob someone - it will all balance out.

And, once again for the ten-billionth time, no-one is saying they don't appreciate the job that good cops do, but you also need to remember that the people in this video are actors, they are not representative of every cop in the world.

Post again if you find any evidence at all of Switch at one single point in this thread saying he doesn't appreciate the jobs that cops do. As far as I can remember, all of his comments without fail have been about 1 specific cop, and that 1 specific incident.

I know I've never said being a policeman was easy, in fact, the amount of police around here are so low, they're scared silly, walking in a group of 10 or more, and if you're looking a certain way, the police will almost never bother you - and even then they probably wouldn't get angry, and would try to be nice about it - and yet some of the biggest gangs move in groups of 50 or 60 on road, all of them carrying knives/guns. I'd hate to be the policeman needing to tell them to leave an area.

well in england guns are illegal and for the most part english cops don't carry guns, right? So moving in large groups is probably a tactical plan.

exactly and the cop in the OP is not the representation of every officer.

As far as Switch goes he has made his opinions pretty clear in other threads about his views on officers that supports my earlier post.

I don't get the point you're trying to make here...

Again, I don't believe anyone ever said that. Although Every policeperson I've ever met is pretty much like that, just not as extreme.

Quotes? Links? I haven't seen anything to back up that statement in this thread; but hey, I'll let him fight his own battles, just that your earlier post was so drastically wide of the mark (IMO), I had to comment.

Arrested? Yes

Innocent? No

Story: Back in high school I had a facination for tractors, and also a key to Caterpillar machines, bad combination. One day I used said key to drive away in a 420D IT Backhoe Loader. Drove it from Eureka drive (SW184th st) and 137th ave (In front of the Winn-Dixie) all the way up to 137th ave and NW 12th st on the east side of the canal where the road used to end and was blocked off my barricades. (over by Rinker where the railroad tracks are and the paintball field used to be). I hid it in the woods over there and used to take it out mudding. After about 2 weeks of this some buddies and I decided to take it out for a ride. I used to talk about it alot and I wanted to meet everyone when they got off the bus lol. Stupid, I know. ANYWAYS, we just got it out of the mud and are driving down 12th street and Im all dressed up in a hard hat and orange vest and my 2 buddies are hangin off the side with their backpacks and all lol. Then a cop passes by and Im like ahhhh sht! he flips a bit** and pulls us over. He was very professional, asked for liscense and registration, I told him I had none. He asked "Is it yours?" I replied No. He asked if I had stolen it and I told him yes I had. I already knew I was busted and he wasnt being a dick so I was very respectful and honest with him. I gave him all the details when he questioned me and hid nothing. He told me that he didnt think I was a criminal and had he not called backup, probably would have let me go if I promised to return the machine. (I had no intention of selling or damaging it, simply to drive it around.) He told me simply to do what he says and I would be back home the next day. So I did. We got to the station and he helped me type up an apologetic letter to the owner of the machine and sure enough, when Kick 'em out Klein (name of the pre-trial judge) saw the letter he immediately let me go home as long as I promised to show up to court. Mind you this is an $80,000 piece of machinery here and it was damn near brand new. So I got home and found a note in the mailbox. The officer had stopped by the house and left instructions on the best way to get my stuff back from the station. Court date came by and the judge saw the letter and all that and she gave me a program where I behave for 6 months and do 50 hours community service and they would throw out the case. I will always be grateful for the actions of this officer as he could have made sure I stayed behind bars for a long time. Ive had encounters with not so friendly cops since then for like speeding and stuff, but he was the first encounter I have had and he really helped me pull my head out of my ass before it was too late. If I could see him today I would buy him a drink and thank him. I remember everyone at the station thought it was pretty funny when I told them what I was there for and they seemed friendly when they realized I wasn't someone that wished death upon them lol. Sadly, I don't remember the officer's name.

I think the point is that there are good cops and there are bad cops. I imagine that the vast majority are good. Unfortunately, my perception and a the perception of a lot of other members of the non law enforcement public is that the good cops will stick up for the bad ones to the point where it reflects poorly on all of them.

That is an AWESOME story. i wish I had the same sort of experience with police offers as you did when I was young and stupid. Actually, I did on one or two occasions but I never did anything THAT crazy. Sounds like a good time.

I'm not sure what opinions your attributing to me, but I think I've been very diligent in not demonizing the police force as a whole.

My view is that in the American democracy police are not extra special. They have a tough job, but they accept the job voluntarily and must abide by rules of conduct (aka laws). Moreover they have an increased obligation to behave legally since they are the individuals swore to uphold the law. An abuse of power by a police officer or any governing official is an enormous affront to democracy and the freedom that is supposed to exist for each and every individual....

As for what I have marked i bold, I have been criticizing a very particular situation with one single officer for the past several posts. You can't say that you don't excuse bad cops for poor judgment and then follow it with an excuse.

If I had that disposition at my job I would be fired. I blame his superiors for not correcting his attitude before it got to where it is. They are responsible for creating the line for what is acceptable. IMO if a cop can't maintain an altruistic attitude he should be let go. But whatever, I guess it's not bad for government work.

For those of you in LE: What mechanisms prevent this from happening?

In any other business, if you protect the poor performers in your business, your business loses customers and stops existing. (In the short run, the customers may still get hurt (cf. Enron) but eventually the offender is gone.) Government lacks this darwinism, so some other check is needed. What's the check here?

Well, it happens because we see so many BS attacks from the media and pundits. Most people have no idea what cops do on a daily basis. That video is a great example of why cops have such an attitude.

So what is in place to keep cops from automatically defending a turd with a badge? I think it depends on the agency. I think every agency has a formal complaints system. Management should be watching their employees. Some places have civilian oversight boards. Coworkers might defend a turd the first couple of times, but if there's a trend, the turd will pay as only peers can demand... Obviously, the criminal system in extreme cases...

To see that many officers together in one place or patrolling at one time, they are either, policing a football match (outside grounds), just coming out of the station or some other event that would cause so many to be in the same place!
But never ever have I seen 10 or more officers walking about on patrol together..and yes I lived in Bethnal Green for over a year and no mate, thats just not seen EVER!
Sometimes you will see the Communtiy Support Officers in groups of 4 or more as they meet up for their chats but they dont even gather in groups of more than 6 unless some sort of large crowd requires that kind of presence and they are providing backup for the REAL cops
I think it may have been a slight exaggeration on your part there and also pretty presumptious for you to suggest;

Re: Ok, why do YOU hate the cops...

Maybe I'll clear that up for you "mate".

If there are a bunch of guys walking in a group of 10 - not police - they (police) will be scared silly. That's the point I was trying to make, they move in such low numbers that groups of 10 are enough to keep them from asking too many questions.

They'll come over and talk alright, but will probably keep it polite, with a hint of self-importance and egotistical annoyance at us. Guess it's probably a bit different, maybe different times, maybe different places (Bethnal Green isn't far from here though).
