Recently we had a cop sitting in a driveway shooting radar on a 1 lane road near my house. This road is not a good road and there is no spot other than private property driveways to pull off for almost 6 miles. It would be a massive safety danager for him to hastilly pull out onto that road and even larger danager to actually pull anyone over unless he wanted to slow chase them for 6 miles (Its a 35mph zone).

I am all for keeping us safe on the roads but traps like this infuriate me because the cop was creating a dangerous environment for all of us on the road. My wife is writing in a letter about it too which we are going to send to several people here in our local govt.

Again, I do not hate the cops and I understand a basic need for order. I have a lot of respect for our men and women in uniform but this instance was totally unacceptable.

After reading the article it sounds to me as if this officer over stepped his authority and got carried away. I don't necessarily agree with the race card being thrown out there at the first opportunity. It is possible that it could be a racially motivated but doubtful in my opinion.

AND

I do think the department as a whole might be held responsible because they put a man back on the streets that was clearly not ready to do his job due to health problems. Who knows, if that officer was able to do his job maybe the accused officer wouldn't had felt the need to taser a defenseless man, albeit a criminal, but none the less a defenseless man.

Title of the linked story is "Man dies after cop hits him with Taser 9 times". It sounds like the first 7 tasings were justified in the initial scuffle but that the later ones at the station were some kind of vendetta, at least the way the story is presented.

Only the most common fallacies are named, so there really aren't that many of them to remember. You might find 20 in a typical critical thinking textbook. In ordinary discussion like the ones found in the sandbox, there are, probably, only a few kinds of mistakes in reasoning that are made over and over. So, you just have to remember a few most common ones, and become good at recognizing them in passages of writing

@ Delta: I'm hoping your meaning that it's BS of the somewhat biased media attention playing the race card at first chance they get (if so I agree), if you mean that it's BS that the family wants justice for something like this that happened (after a man already cuffed gets tasered to death then put in a squad car, taken to police station and tasered twice more) then thats just ****ed up.
