Re: Ok, why do YOU hate the cops...
Regardless, an inventory search is for the protection of both you and the police. The police don't want to be responsible for leaving your car on the side of the road with a $10,000 diamond engagement ring in the center console and have it stolen just because you were arrested for traffic warrants while you were on your way to propose to your fiance.

Re: Ok, why do YOU hate the cops...
My opinion of the whole thread......
![]() After being a cop for a few years now I can honestly say to the cop haters here, I have no idea what you are talking about. I'd also like to know where the heck you live to have so many crooked cops. Just because you don't like something a cop does, does not mean what he did was wrong. It just means you don't like what he did. In a perfect world we would all be nice and polite every time and this includes the "bad guys". It doesn't matter if the police are getting paid to "serve" you. The rules of society are that we are to be polite to others. This includes the "bad guys". The bottom line here is that many posters here expect the police to be perfect. I haven't seen any walk on water so I am pretty sure that isn't going to happen. I am seeing so many posters here painting all cops with the same brush as a rotten few. If the same painting technique was applied to them they would be hollaring bloody murder because it doesn't apply to them. If I wanted to be popular I would have been a fireman. Hate me all you want. Hate us all you want. Just remember when your a** is in a sling and you call me to save it, I hope it will be a long and healthy hate (to paraphrase Hawkeye Pierce).

Re: Ok, why do YOU hate the cops...
1. how old are you? (it is my belief that the younger crowd is more anti-police (16 to 25))
38 2. have you ever been arrested? where you innocent? twice. Guilty as hell. Convicted? No. Never convicted. 3. why do you hate cops, ok maybe hate is strong, dislike cops? You harsh my buzz, get all up in my grill, and get all weird when I thought everything was cool. 4. is there any hope for you to change your mind about cops? I guess so. Is there any chance you could change your mind about going 90 on 610 just west of 288? That laser trap is a bitch, and I think it would be a fair trade. 5. what, as cops could we do better to make citizens appreciate/like us? See 4. Also, maybe you could take more of a Patch Adams approach to dealing with dangerous criminals. Has anyone tried to apply the power of comedy to law enforcement? I don't think so, so don't go acting as if you've tried all less-deadly options before tasing some bro when you know you haven't. First lame jokes, then physical comedy, then maybe escalate to sarcasm and dry irony and so on and so forth in that fashion. |

(then how did you know about this? It was PM'ed to me.) This thread started with a honest purpose, to give you guys that always seem to have a negative comment in every police or law related post a chance to explain why, vent, and ask intellegent questions for a honest response. Some of you did (and I appreciate the discussion) and I learned from those posts, the number one thing is "first impressions", how we, as cops, approach and talk with you, the community. But then some got way out there with there comments and post, and this thread just ain't worth following anymore. Not because I don't like what some of you said, but some of you are the problems, it ain't the cops, you got the problems and need to seek some serious help... 1. If your having that much contact with the police you are either: a. doing something wrong... alot b. unlucky as hell c. live in a town with a population of 2, you and the cop. d. all of the above 2. A couple of you are conspirisious, you think the government and police are out to get YOU.... thats your problem not ours, nothing we can do to help you on that. 3. And then a few of you are just in your own world, you have no clue what the police do, you also appear not to understand the criminal element, and you have no clue how a society with laws, and law enforcement work. So since you don't know or understand you don't like it. Again thats your issues, not mine, and only you can fix that. so good luck. |

Re: Ok, why do YOU hate the cops...
SWITCH... funny, you were one of the reasons I started this thread, I noticed you always have a anti-cop comment in police related links... so I'm going to answer your questions... I assume it's the below 2 items you wanted addressed...
Quote:
BUT if you were under lawful arrest (here in the State of Florida) the police are required to conduct a inventory search of your car, secure any money or high value items, and then tow the vehicle off of the roadway or private property. Even if you said NO. Now if you were NOT under arrest, then if you said NO, then thats 100% NO without probale cause of a crime or probale cause from a K9 alert on your vehicle. Quote:
and as a ending note... by your stories it would appear to me, from the outside looking in, and reading your prior post that you have a problem with authority, and probally display a negitave attitude alot around cops. So the problem is just as much yours as it is theres. I am not saying this is FACT, just what I assume, and we all know what assume means to u and me. lol |

Re: Ok, why do YOU hate the cops...
It was left there because you were arrested? Well, there you have it. Search incident to arrest.

Re: Ok, why do YOU hate the cops...
I think most cops are decent, but its important to look into cases of police brutality. Ya cant just give people power without it being checked and scrutinized, and i think too many police officers take it way too personally.
One good example that comes to mind was how the LA police department handled the immigration rally in May. Although it did become an unlawful protest, the use of force was completely disproportionate and deplorable. We cant just accept that kind of thing, and its important to look into it. |

Re: Ok, why do YOU hate the cops...
I told you the story exactly as it was. You're being rather short sighted in blaming me here. Not to mention you started the thread with 'why do you HATE the cops'. I don't think anyone here has said they HATE the cops, I've just given a few example of some injustices performed by police officers.
I'm leaving nothing out of the story from high school. I was pulled over for what the police officer said was a swerve while driving. Then he searched the passenger and then let me off without any ticket. As far as the seatbelt ticket. What happened there (as I've already said) is that I had an outstanding ticket for a no seatbelt which spent several months floating around my car. Eventually (as it would seem) that resulted in a warrant for my arrest. I got a letter in the mail about that the day AFTER I was arrested for it.. funny, eh. Anyway, i don't see how I've lead you to believe that I've been hiding pertinent details about what I've written above. And if you're calling me anti cop because of that snowflake comment that jmj and ferris neg rep'd me for, you're overly sensitive. If police are acting beyond their authority, they're breaking the law. Don't harp on me for pointing it out. Quote:
Is there any mundane circumstance that would justify a search of a passenger when a police officer claims the stop was due to swerving by the driver? I don't have any problem with authority. I have a problem with people who think being in a position of authority means they can do what they like without any degree of oversight or self control. If I ever meet anyone in ANY position of authority, I treat them with a degree of respect that they've demonstrated they deserve. As a rule, I'm very courteous when pulled over, since an officer can pull any number of reasons up for my ticket, but I don't concede any assertions that I know to be false. If, for example, an officer says I was speeding, and I know I wasn't, I will say, I'm sorry, but you are mistaken. I had cruise control on. (As I often do). I don't have a 'problem with authority' just because I don't let them do whatever they like.

I'm confused about which story has an officer looking in your car's console, and which one has your friend being searched. I guess your car was searched when you were arrested and your friend was patted down when you swerved in the street? If so, it all makes sense and no bad cops!
